Rickshaw Driver Builds Free School
ANCHOR: And next up a heart warming story from one of India's poorest areas. A Japanese journalist met a young rickshaw puller with a dream to build a school for poor children. Now the dream is coming to fruition. Let's get the full story. STORY: In the northern town of Varanasi, a dream has come true for a young rickshaw puller named Salim. But Salim's dream was cut short because he was too poor himself. He only had the heart and the idea. The rest was up to a Japanese journalist named Shen Ekeda. [Shen Ekeda, Good Samaritan]: "I met Salim. He has a family and dreamt of making a school for poor Indian children. I spoke to him and thought we could do something and I went back to Japan and spoke to my friends. Around 20-30 people have come forth and contributed towards the construction of the school and we bought land in this village." Now Salim's dream has a name: the 'Mother Baby Kindergarten School,' and construction is in full swing. But Ekeda and his friends are doing the construction themselves. [Myco Kukomutp, Good Samaritan]: "I am used to working with foreign countries to help poor people and also the handicapped. I heard from one Japanese about this and came here to build a house for street children." Even though Salim is still poor, he says he doesn't want to charge any tuition from the students. The classes may be free, but the story of how poor rickshaw driver was able to provide free education is priceless.
