Teenager Domenico (Sandro Panseri) is forced to end his life as a student and travel to Milan to take a test in the hopes of landing a job with a big corporation. Ermanno Olmi's 1961 film took Italian neo-realism a step further by using real people instead of actors in real locations. Brilliantly photographed and framed, Olmi's protagonist steps from the world of childhood into the de-personalizing world of the self-contained corporation. We follow Domenico as he reluctantly leaves his village on the outskirts of Milan, a place making the slow transition from rural to suburban, to the modern urban world being overgrown with corporate building.
