(July 21)Shots rang out as emergency workers responded to a report of a pickup truck fire in the St. Louis area. Officials say a 22-year-old firefighter/paramedic was shot to death as he got off the fire truck early Monday morning. And two Maplewood police officers were wounded. One officer was shot in the right shoulder and his injury wasn't considered life-threatening The other injured officer was taken to another hospital but details aren't being released about his condition. It's believed that gunman was holed up in a home across the street from the burning vehicle. By noon that home had burned to the ground, but the status of the suspect wasn't known. Dozens of police officers surrounded the brick home for hours with rifles pointed as smoke poured from the home. In the meantime, officers went door to door in the neighborhood telling people to evacuate immediately. There's no immediate word what on what caused the standoff. ___ ___, The Associated Press.
