Much of this blog was shot a while back when there was still snow. I am filming establishing shots and some of Hart's arrival into the world below the clouds (that will be later added in VFX). However this blog focuses more on Gabi and I reflecting about things - about the difference between Switzerland and London; and I talk about my childhood in Liverpool and walking in the Lake District as a child. The video is cut to an incredible track written and performed by Joss Loner called "I will be free" Joss Loner can be found at www.youtube.com/JossLoner If you like her please subscribe to her channel - she is very talented!

As you may have noticed my videos show a little less in them than they used to - the reason for this is that I'm going through a tough stage at the moment and so I have to focus more on the filming than the blogs - otherwise it could all go tits up! This is also why I haven't yet responded to many people in the last couple of weeks - I will sit down and go through everything to respond to you all as soon as the crisis is over!! :-) This one is quite a nice blog cut to a great track by CENTERCOURSE. 'Looks like it sounds good' www.centercourse.net Enjoy!

One of the problems with shooting at night is that, with a lack of light (unless you have a generator to run lights off) you can be tempted to put the gain up on the camera. The problem with this is that you will be able to see video 'noise'. So another way of shooting at night, is to shoot during the day in such a way as to make it look like it is night after you have graded it. After I have got these shots, back at the chalet Gabi has a suprise for me... Also please see an FAQ section on my profile page. I hope you all have a good week!

Anyone ever watched 'into the wild'? What's the one lesson you learned from the film? ....never eat strange plants. hmmmm. We filmed this a while ago but I haven't had a chance to edit it until now. One of the crucial points of the film is that I am living above the cloud cover and have no knowledge of the world below - where the film will eventually take me. So to film this required catching a ski lift to very high altitudes indeed to look down from the top of a mountain at the world below. Filming a scene at different times of the day over different weeks presents a problem - a sequence of shots that are meant to take place over a period of seconds or minutes all look as though they are at different times of the day. So how do you make the shots all look as if they all exist at the same time? Also when shooting on a location, to what extent do you need to adhere to the geography of the location?

With the snow gone, Gabi and I can go down to the valley for food - and after I shoot a sequence for when Hart has arrived back up from the car in the clouds, freezing cold and hungry as he staggers home - a little lost. It's an engaging shot but I hadn't anticipated that my hand would be in shot and I didn't use make-up on my hand - but no worries, I can fix that easily in the grade. A process that will also easily fix the clean-looking teddybear (he is extremely dirty in real life!) This blog is a week delayed - apologies.

This blog is all about lighting for one shot. It's about creating hard shadows with none-directional lights and colour balancing. It's a simple scene. Until now the film has been set in the past - when food was in abundance, but still a long while after his parents had died. And then we cut into nightmares telling the story from a long time previously when he was a child which culminates in a focus towards food, ending in close up shots of him ripping meat with his teeth before he wakes with a start, into the grim reality of later - when food is more scarce and he is very hungry indeed.

So we're up a mountain - where rain on the forecast often means snow for us!! And I only have summer tyres on my car... so we get ourselves a little snowed in without a great deal of food! But no matter, that's my cue to start filming interiors - starting with a memory scene which has me dressing up as a woman. It has occurred to me whilst filming that I have made a fatal error in shack location - they would never have survived the cold by the time they would have built a shelter from wood etc. And so I review this and go in search of a cave that may be the answer... which is a fair trek down a long hill followed by a long struggle back up again!

Apologies for the delay in this blog. In every film there is a call-to-adventure for the main character - something that happens that challenges the status quo and sets the story in motion - and this is it for 'One'. Hart - pushed further off the beaten track for food comes upon a car and in it he finds the battered remnants of a book. A book that sends him off down through the clouds into a world he doesn't know. Watch me film the scene and do a test composit of snow and mist and argue with Gabi over Swiss rolls! :-)

Thank you all very much for your words of support on my last blog. I was a bit sore the next day but all's well now! So in this video I go through the process that I'm having to adopt - focusing the camera without someone to focus on, composing the shot at the same time as standing in it and generally getting frustrated by inevitably doing umpty-nine takes to find that I'm not in a single one of them - having done my performance just off frame! I also get an opportunity to wind Gabi up; she shows you around the chalet - and little miss cheeky manages to get me back for winding her up!

Thankyou for your messages and comments - they are all truly amazing - I am working through them one by one and will reply to everybody - but I have a massive number of people to reply to - so it will take a while before I get through them all - especially as I have to do it around the film too! I love you all. Before I can film, I must work out schedules and logistics - what do I film where and in what weather conditions? I also explain the geographical parameters of the film as well as finishing off the costume - ageing it - finishing the sledge; finding the area around where Hart lives - right bang in army training territory! Gabi and I go for a walk in the summer-like temperatures - and I need snow to film....

Now that I'm here in this stunningly beautiful mountainside, location scouting is the first priority! So I meet up with a native expert to show me around - and while he's at it, he show's me up too! He's 70 years old, but beats me running up a long series of steps - done like the A-team! He happily jogs to the edge of a cliff and takes me with him - hanging off an old tree for support! He loves his country and the mountainside and shows us what he knows best... So to the bit Gabi has been waiting for - buying clothes! It is going to be extremely cold up in the mountains and we will be stationary for long periods of time, so we need the right clothes - very warm but breathable so that our skin doesn''t bloat and peel and go nasty like a nasty thing!
