About the piece: This piece is one of the Five Intermezzi by Canadian composer and pianist Vincent Lo. This composition (Lo's opus 28) won first place in the British Columbia provincial and national judging of the 2008 CFMTA Canada Music Week Music Writing Competition ( http://www.cfmta.org ). On his "About me" page at the SoundClick website ( http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=644416 ), Lo lists Bach, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, and Balakirev as his favorite composers, but this intermezzo is very much in the spirit of Brahms's shorter piano pieces. Lo can be contacted through his YouTube account (zeryx28) or his website ( http://www.audiomuse.ca ). About the performance: The performance is by Stephen Malinowski (smalin on YouTube), done using the conductor program (http://www.musanim.com/tapper ) on the evening of August 7th, 2008. About the visualization: The visualization contains two bar-graph scores. In the upper score, the notes are colored to delineate the main melody, bass line, and other parts. In the lower score, the notes are colored to show pitch class, using a "harmonic coloring" in which the colors from the painters "color wheel" are mapped to the notes of the musician's "circle of fifths" ( http://www.musanim.com/mam/pfifth.htm ). This lets you see the frequent modulations in the piece; for example, the movement from the green/brown palette (f minor, 0:37 to 0:43) to the violet-centered palette (f-sharp minor, 0:45 to 0:50), and the contrasting (somewhat faster) middle section in which the green/violet area dominates (c minor, 1:17 to 1:42). .

The audio in this version is badly distorted by YouTube's compression. I learned what was causing the problem and how to work around it (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvmZ1PxGsgI) and I've posted a fixed-up version here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSenDfMYIeM Hopefully this one will last a while.

Here's the full text of the poem: For my part, I never care For those lips, that tongue-ty'd are: Tell-tales I wo'd have them be Of my Mistresse, and of me. Let them prattle how that I Sometimes freeze, and sometimes frie: Let them tell how she doth move Fore- or backward in her love: Let them speak by gentle tones, One and th'others passions: How we watch, and seldome sleep; How by Willowes we doe weep: How by stealth we meet, and then Kisse, and sigh, so part agen. This the lips we will permit For to tell, not publish it.

Strings and alto voice are synthetic. Wer Suende thut, der ist vom Teufel, Denn dieser hat sie aufgebracht. Doch wenn man ihren schnoeden Banden Mit rechter Andacht widerstanden, Hat sie sich gleich davon gemacht. He who sins is of the devil, For he has incited him; But if we resist his heinous snares With righteous devotion, He will soon be put to flight.
