We got our hands on the first test model of the first commercially-available laser harp we've ever seen. As you can see from this video of the beamz Music Performance System, you no longer need to make one to play one.

We took a spin yesterday in the Ford HySeries Edge, the world's first working plug-in, fuel-cell, hydrogen-powered car, which the Detroit automaker plans to show off as a concept at the New York auto show tomorrow. Though wafting zero-emissions exhaust in our face taught us plenty as to the realities of a hydrogen-powered automotive experience, what really made our test special was actually being able to drive a car running on advanced hydrogen fuel-cell technology that can power itself with a 336-volt battery pack. Sure, the speedster has none of the comforts of its auto show brethren (airbags, rear-view mirrors, turn signals), but what it lacks in style it makes up for in function. Hybrid Technologies' thoroughbred hits a top speed of 175 mph and maximum range of 200 miles. Loud pipes may save lives, but quiet, all-electric motorcycles may save the planet. Well, sort of. But, hey, at least they'll save some coin when you silently whiz past the gas station. We got a chance to see a lithium-ion powered chopper when Hybrid Technologies (the same guys with the electric roadster and the electric mini cooper) swung by out office. Their Stealth motorcycle has a horsepower equivalent to a 500-cc bike, and it tops out at around 50 mph. That's not much on the highway, but it's plenty of speed to zoom around town. And at least your neighbors won't complain about the noise: This is one good looking, yet nearly silent hog. Check out the video below.... Videogames and force feedback have been fair-weather friends for years, from motorized steering wheels that go spastic when you slam into a wall, to entire seats that tilt and lurch as your F-16 banks out of harm's way. But playing with the Novint Falcon feels like nothing you've tried before. We've been testing the Stone for a couple of weeks (see video, below), and the audio quality is identical to the Shuffle. The Shuffle still has a few advantages, like an integrated clip on the back, 12 hours of battery life (the Stone has 10) and a case that's less prone to scratches. But can you really argue with $40 for a 1GB player that's small enough to comfortably smuggle into prison? And if you can't live without a clip, you can buy a Stone-compatible one for $10. Retro gaming is an entirely renewable fad as aging geeks try to recapture that initial Pac-Man high, and new gamers discover the kitschy-yet-pastoral simplicity of 2D graphics and a big, knobby joystick. Sure, you can play Pac-Man on nearly any PC, with official and unlicensed emulators that perfectly resurrect the neon mazes, the frantic action and the haunting "Wokka Wokka." But without the solid thud of a classic joystick, it's not the same. And that's the best thing about the Katana, a tabletop arcade cabinet from DreamAuthentics: that giant, sturdy, straight-from-the-arcade joystick. The crusher is hungry; it must be fed. Its hardened steel maw opens to accommodate an American sedan. The jaws begin to close, and the crusher rocks softly side to side as it brings its full force to bear. The car emits high-pitched rending noises and then — pop! — the windshield blows. And — pop! pop! — the headlights explode. In a matter of seconds, the sedan is less than 2 ft. tall, and the crusher yawns to accept another rust-bitten victim. It's all part of a highly efficient salvage industry that ensures that, after death, your car is reduced to its basic elements and reborn — to be used over and over again. Imagine if every taxi in NYC were powered by the BMW's hydrogen-fueled V8: The only thing coming out of their tailpipes would be water vapor. I pull the Hydrogen 7 out into traffic and joust my way over to the West Side Highway and trundle up to 40-or-so miles per hour, far slower than its' touted 154-mph top speed. The H7 is running just fine, so I thumb the H2 button on the wheel and—exactly nothing happens. The speed and note of the engine change not one bit. Check out this mind-bending demo, Andy Wilson's PlayTogether surface computing system. Wilson's previous work on the PlayAnywhere interface used a table-top projection PC combined with an infrared camera to let virtual computer graphics interact with real-world objects in real time. The PlayTogether system builds on that concept, using two networked table-top systems to let people play a virtual game of chess in two locations, using real pieces and a real board on either end, with each player's opponent's pieces projected onto his board. Wilson even demoed a three-dimensional variant of his table-top system (this project didn't even have a name) that allowed users to put three-dimensional objects on a table top, then drive a virtual computer-based car over them. As the car drove over each object, a separate LCD display showed a 3-D rendered car jumping over instant computer models of the real-world objects that had been placed in its path. It's almost impossible to describe without seeing it, so I took some video.
