From the soundtrack of somewhat successful movie "Strictly Business" The tagline on the movie poster reads: "A movie about a kid who goes from the mailroom to the boardroom by improving relations between a mover and a shaker." Wonderful. I dunno, even in 1991, it's a real stretch of the imagination to believe Tommy Davidson as a "kid."

Yes, I know you know Flashlight. You still dance to Knee Deep at least once a month. One Nation Under a Groove? Probably on permanent rotation on your Ipod. But can you dig the smooth, funk-jazz groove that is Mr. Wiggles? One of the under-appreciated gems off the Motor-Booty Affair, the album that was the bane of Sir Nose Devoidoffunk. Dr. Funkenstein gave him a hundred pounds of hell on that disk. How can he be underwater with everyone else, and yet be the only wet blanket? To all my fish and fishies, Go Wiggle!

I played this cassette so often that one day, the tape snapped. I kid you not. Don't overlook Heavy D when you speak about how good rappers in the 90's were.

From Common's debut album "Can I Borrow A Dollar" back in '92. As I've been told by commenters, the other guy is YNot.

The recording industry has been very vocal as of late, in it's complaints of flagging sales due to music piracy. I don't know about you, but in the heyday of Napster, I purchased more music than ever before, or ever since. Access to "free" music exposed me to so many different styles and genres, that I found myself compelled to go out and buy the albums of the artists I downloaded. Maybe the industry is suffering now not because of piracy, but because of poor product. I might be a little biased toward the music of my youth, but I gotta say: pop music today just seems to suck out loud. So with that, I give you one of my favorite ballads, "Drowning in Your Eyes" by Ephraim Lewis. It's nothing less than a wonderful, tearfully romantic masterpiece, and I think it puts to shame most of the music created today in the same genre. The details of Mr. Lewis' death is readily available on the net, so I won't speak of it here. But if you must look into his passing, listen to this first. Or better yet, don't bother, and let this song be the last memory of him that you hold in your head.

Jean Norris and Renee Neufville, better known as Zhane, were part of Queen Latifah's Flavor Unit. The girls have each gone their separate ways, but for me, "Groove Thang" and "Hey Mr. D.J." will always be the anthems for summer in NY.

Okay, to answer the obvious question a'comin' "why is Q-tip wearing a burn mask?" Apparently, and this is no joke, he was beat up by Teddy Riley and crew over the line "strictly hardcore tracks, not a new jack swing" in the song "We Got the Jazz." Teddy Riley is of course one of the pioneers of New Jack Swing. It wasn't even 'Tip's line, but Phife's. The battle scars couldn't be covered by makeup, hence the mask. Don't know if it's real, but that's how the story goes.

Say what you want about these boys, the ironic name and whatnot, "Tap the Bottle" is still the jam, even 15 years later. Check out the flow! And not a single curse to be heard! Everyone stop watcha doin,' and take a 3-minute break to remember what rap once was.

Do you think we'll ever see a rap group with a name like "The Fu-Schnickens" ever again? These guys, The UMC's, Digital Underground; they weren't to everyone's tastes, but they were there for those that wanted them. There was diversity in rap, you know? But now... But now.

Okay, so back in 1980 something-or-other, a teenage me is sitting by the radio, waiting for KissFM to play any hot jam so's I can record it (stop. you know you did it too.) All of a sudden, I hear Special Ed's voice and what sounds like the opening beat of "Come on, let's move it," and I hit "record" on my boom box cassette deck. But wait. That's not the original version of "let's move it." It's a remix. Sigh. I hate remixes. But as I listen, I think to myself, you know, this ain't half bad. As a matter of fact, it's pretty damn good. So I let the deck run, and I record a remix of "Come on, let's move it" that I've never heard played anywhere else except my recording. Can't find it on vinyl, cassette, CD's, or MP3. So for your enjoyment, my old school heads, I give you a rare remix of Special Ed's "come on let's move it." A completely different groove than the original, but give it a chance. Maybe it'll grow on you like it did on me. And if anyone has any info about this cut, speak out!
