Mohammed Saleem Community representative board member of SRB6, Promoting the good work of the Birmingham City Councils Single Regeneration Round 6 (SRB6) one of many community members featured on the bill board campaign SRB6 stands for Single Regeneration Budget Round 6. SRB6 North West Corridors is a local partnership, involving local people, community and voluntary organisations, local businesses and statutory organisations including the police and city council. The initiative has £39.9 million over seven years - from 2000 to 2007, and covers Soho and parts of Lozells & East Handsworth, Aston, Handsworth Wood, and Ladywood wards. The strategic aim of SRB6 is to work with the local community to bring about the long-term and sustainable regeneration of the key corridors within North West Birmingham as part of an overall regeneration strategy for the city. The priority is to improve local people's quality of life by reducing the gap between deprived and other areas or between different groups. This includes addressing disadvantage experienced by ethnic minority communities. SRB6 is primarily a capital based programme to improve the physical infrastructure of the area, and provide the basis of ongoing, sustained regeneration. Activity is focused mainly around the three corridors of Soho Road (A41), Dudley Road (A457) and Midland Metro Line 1, along with supporting the local centres of Lozells Road and Rookery Road

aap ki awaz project Nearly half of people (47%) in Great Britain say they would not want to live next door to a Muslim person with mental health problems. This shocking finding of extra discrimination, from a survey released by mental health charity Rethink to mark World Mental Health Day on October 10th, clearly shows that Muslim people with mental health problems face even more discrimination in society than their non-Muslim counterparts. The research, carried out by YouGov, found: 29 per cent would not be happy living next door to a person with mental health problems 47 per cent of people would not be happy living next door to a Muslim person with mental health problems 13 per cent would be happy living next door to a Muslim person with mental health problems 19 per cent would be happy to live next door to a person with mental health problems It was also revealed that 89 per cent of those surveyed think that people are more suspicious of Muslim people today than they were ten years ago while 81 per cent accept that the way we treat each other affects our mental health. These findings tie in with further research by Rethink which examined the Pakistani community's view of mental health. In this study - the Aap Ki Awaaz (Your Voice) project - carried out in Birmingham, it was found that nearly two thirds of respondents felt that the current perception and media publicity of Muslims was affecting their mental health. Respondents said that the negative portrayal can make them feel scared, lower their self-esteem, and lead to stress and mental health issues. One interviewee said: "We feel anger at [the] media's injustice against Muslims -- feel frustrated and unequipped to make a difference. All this can affect our mental health". Ajaib Khan, the Rethink service manager who led the Birmingham research, said that the findings from both surveys made for disappointing reading: "People with mental health problems, from all ethnic and religious backgrounds, encounter discrimination, but these figures show just how bad it is for Muslim people. The fact that society's behaviour towards Muslim people can contribute to mental ill-health in the first place is unacceptable." Khan runs an outreach service for people with mental health problems from a mosque in Birmingham. The service works primarily with the Pakistani and Mirpuri communities. A PIONEERING raft of new measures designed to prevent violent extremism from taking hold in Birmingham was b launched 12th sept 2007. City equalities chief, Coun Alan Rudge, said the three-pronged plan was designed to halt those hijacking Islam to spread extremist views. Council chiefs have spent the past six months working with the city's Muslim community on the blueprint which was started in the wake of the arrest of a number of terrorist suspects in the city earlier this year. City leaders now have more than £500,000 in Government cash to push forward a host of new ideas aimed at preventing extremism. Among the 11 projects is a programme to develop a training scheme for Imams. Another will work to reduce the risks of mosques being infiltrated by extremists while there will also be work with Islamic schools and madrassahs to promote community integration. In addition, youth projects will be run to educate and empower them to reject those who try to prey on them to peddle hatred. There will also be workshops designed to encourage greater responsibility in reporting issuing affecting the Muslim community. Coun Rudge said: "The true tenants of the Islamic faith are peace and goodwill. "This is about tackling the small number who wrongly using religion to support their own ends. They misrepresent religion and they misrepresent the community. He added: "I think everywhere has the potential for people to come under the influence of extremists. We have to make sure vulnerable people aren't drawn to them. "This is about helping them to feel involved in the community they are living in and feel they have a stake in it." Coun Rudge said the community played an integral part in designing the projects which they felt would best tackle areas that concerned them.
