"A BEAUTIFUL EVENING OF BEAUTIFUL MUSIC BY TWO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE".Saturday Review. The famous recital in New York, which had to be repeated nine days later due to popular demand.Unprecedented. The two friends just happened to be in New York at the same time. Made available to me by a good friend.Mucho gracias.I DO NOT name my sources!Even under pain of torture! There are many written commentaries about this recital,so I shall be brief in my quotations, and editing of the music critics. Harold C. Schonberg,New York Times review-- "It was a happy day when these two supreme artists decided to join forces.May it happen more often!Miss de los Angeles can still project a song in a manner that can tear the heart out of a brass idol. Her voice has deteriorated remarkably little through the years, and it still has that intimacy, that velvet texture, that makes it unique. And a singer of her vast experience knows how to cover up and pace herself. One or two high notes that threatened to go badly were immediately adjusted. Even before the concert started, there was the buzz of anticipation that heralds a Real Event.------. The audience would gladly have kept Miss de los Angeles and Miss de Larrocha going for the entire night." Omus Hirschbein,Administrator-----. "At the end there were roses, roses everywhere. To those who attended the recital these words were as symbolic as they were literal.-----. Remembering the many hundreds who had been turned away,I asked Miss de los Angeles and Miss de Larrocha if they would consent to give their recital once again. They agreed on a date nine days later, and that appearance was also sold out.------." Applause at the end of Act 1. Long intermission.Audience is becoming restless.President Gronchi, and his wife, waiting in Presidential Box. Male and female radio commentary. MALE--"Behind the curtain they are preparing a very large loudspeaker for an announcement. The Theatre's management is now writing a communication which will be read in a little while. However we know that the performance has been cancelled until next Saturday. The reasons will be given in the communication,we hope. Female---We are truly distressed, distressed for the radio listeners, distressed for the audience, and above all the President. MALE----The President is waiting patiently.I don't know if,at this point he suspects what is happening on stage. However they are preparing a communication. I have been authorised to make the following announcement to the radio audience:-"SIGNORA CALLAS HAS COMPLAINED OF A SUDDEN LOSS OF VOICE". FEMALE--- So then our interpretation of the delay was a bit hasty, wasnt it? We were thinking it was due to a bad mood and instead it's a matter of loss of voice. We should add that in fact since yesterday Signora Callas was not feeling perfectly in order with her voice, whether out of tiredeness or because of a bit of a cold.In any case yesterday her physical condition, her vocal condition were not perfect. Evidently this evening she would have liked to overcome, with the best intention, her state of uncertainty, but we repeat that, perhaps she wasn't very much helped by any optism and therefore, since in all things it is our uncertainties of this profession,as they say.....We will continue to stay at the microphone until such time as the official announcement is made, because as as I have said,we can always hope until the last moment, although the exit of the President of the Republic from the theatre leaves little for which to hope. A sense of bewilderment and dismay is begining to come over the audience, that still does not quite know how to account for this delay and the sudden departure of President Gronchi from his box. So many dreams of young ladies in coming to this evening's performance,so many splendid clothes displayed for this event, and so much love for music that is disappointed on this occasion. MALE----Here is the announcement. 5 minutes,50 seconds. STAGE:-'DUE TO CIRCUMSTANCES BEYOND OUR CONTROL THE PERFORMANCE HAS BEEN CANCELLED'. FEMALE----As our radio listeners can hear the audience's reaction is somewhat strong, and that is understandeable enough. Naturally, the greatest uproar, needless to say,COMES FROM THE BALCONY. MALE---The television cameramen are at work, naturally, while the audience is still not aware of,or will not accept, the meaning of an announcement that has been made and is PROTESTING VIOLENTLY and is still remaining here with no sign of them leaving the Hall, and so do the musicians in the orchestra. FEMALE---And,in fact, the announcement was rather terse,I would say,and consequently is unable to satisfy the audience that has been deprived of such an important and interesting performance. It is something,as we have said, that leaves one in dismay......" Radio transmission is suddenly stopped at this point. Due to illness,Maria Callas was villified for weeks, months, and even years. However, she brushed herself down, stood up and continued with her career.Alas, the Press were now hounding her mercilessly.Emotionally, I think her self confidence was affected, more than she publicly admitted.Any great singer would feel a sense of betrayal, with headlines of"Callas walks out on President Gronchi"."Callas,Rome Walkout" etc. The most sinister piece from the press was a newsreel of her recording Norma, with chorus, alleging "She was in fine voice just a few days later".A complete lie. It was old film footage of five years earlier, recording her first studio Norma. THUS ENDETH THE STORY OF THE SO-CALLED ROME WALKOUT. PHOTOS.Courtesy of divasthesite. Also,The Callas Collection. Hairpiece worn in her final Normas,Paris Opera 1965. DESIGNED AND MADE BY CHRISTIAN DIOR. In January 1958,Callas was to open the Rome Opera House season in the opera Norma, with Italy's President and his wife in attendance.A Gala Evening. WIKIPEDIA quote:- "The day before the opening night, Callas alerted the management that she was not well and that they should have a standby ready. She was told 'NO ONE CAN DOUBLE CALLAS'. After being treated by doctors, she felt better on the day of performance and decided to go ahead with the opera. A SURVIVED BOOTLEG RECORDING of the first act reveals Callas sounding ill.Feeling that her voice was slipping away, she felt that she could not complete the performance, and consequently, she cancelled after the first act. She was accused of walking out on the President of Italy in a fit of temperament, and pandemonium broke out. Press coverage aggravated the situation." FRONT PAGE NEWS,the following day. A jaunty piece of operetta. We are so accustomed hearing her in opera, and lieder, and a bit of operetta, but this is a revelation. The la,la,la's at the close are magic.I hasten to add I'm not one to judge singers by vocal gymnastics, they don't really impress me, but this ending is HAPPEEE! Kingsway Hall,London, von Karajan conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra.1955. Is that Schwarzkopf's husband Walter Legge, caught on the tape, begining to applaud on completion of the piece? Rosalinda's aria from Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss 11. A party in Act 2 where she sings a spirited Csárdás. English Translation:- Sounds of my homeland, You awaken my longing, Call forth tears To my eyes! When I hear you Your songs of home, You draw me back, My Hungary, to you! O homeland, so wonderful, How clearly shines the sun there! How green your forests, How laughing the fields, Oh land, where I was so happy! Yes, your beloved image Entirely fills my soul, Your beloved image! And though I am far from you, ah so far, Yours remains for all eternity My soul, ever there, Dedicated to you alone! O homeland so wondrous, How clearly shines the sun there! How green your forests! How laughing your fields! Oh land, where I was so happy! Fire, zest for living, Swell the true Hungarian breast, Hurrah! On to the dance, The Csárdás sounds so brightly! Brown-skinned girl, You must be my dancer; Give me your arm quickly, Dark-eyed child! Thirsty tipplers, Grasp the cup, Pass it in a circle Quickly from hand to hand! Slurp the fire In the Tokay, Give a toast From the fatherland! Ha! Fire, Zest for life Swell the true Hungarian breast, Hurray! To the spirited dance The csárdás sounds loud and clear! La, la, la, la, la! La, la, la, la, la!

Small Queen's Hall,London,17th.December 1926. Electrical recording. Earlier that year in June, she gave her emotional Farewell Performance, at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden,London-----on my site, also, the new electrical recording technique was used. In 1927 Dame Nellie returned to Australia, and died 1931. Her voice sounds absolutely lovely at the age of 65. In all,she recorded four pieces in December, but I only have two. The other piece is on my site. LA TRAVIATA with John Brownlee. Just type in-- lochness11 melba-- into your search, and all my Melba uploads will appear. Happy hunting! Melba, the last of the 19th century tradition of bel canto sopranos,is one of only two singers with a marble bust in the foyer of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. The other is Adelina Patti.

Handel.I'm flabbergasted at the control Kath has over her breathing in this slow piece. It sounds SO effortless! I kept thinking "She's going to mess this up"! How wrong I was.She never did "Mess things up"." Where did she find the energy, and the very long phrasing? She was recovering from long spells of tiring hospital treatments. leaving her exhausted, and a bit disheartened. In June of the following year,1953, the surgeons were forced to operate again, but this time alas, in a vain attempt to alleviate the unbearable pain. She died three and a half months later in October 1953. As ever, in these series of Kingsway Hall,London, two day recordings the good acoustics of the hall are clearly heard. Recorded at the Kingsway Hall,London, with full orchestra. Sir Adrian Boult conducting. The sessions consist of Bach and Handel arias (four each),recorded 7th./8th.October 1952. She died 8th. October 1953. The full glory of Ferrier's voice, and her emotional commitment to these religious pieces is clear. HANDEL.Return,O God of Hosts! From the oratario Samson. These last recordings are easily obtainable from Decca, your High Street store,or online.

In Orfeo,LIVE recording."Deh! placatevi con me".Sung in Italian,1951. Orfeo, playing his lyre, beseeches the spirits of the dead, and devils of the Underworld, entry, in search of his beloved Euridice. They grant him entry, and he descends into the Underworld. Unique, unmistakeable, great English contralto caught in her prime, live on the opera stage in Amsterdam, Holland, singing the lead in Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice. All of the opera performance is riveting, and only found in the archives many years later by the producer of these 1951 recordings, Klaas A.Posthuma. THIS recording has not been remastered, and Ferrier's voice is all the better for that, clicks, creaking floorboards, and all.I've heard the remastered edition---don't like it. A few weeks after these performances, she was diagnosed with the illness which caused her death in 1953, aged 41. She was widely loved in Holland. It was her first overseas destination,1947, following World War 2. She also toured many European countries. The USA and Canada(coast to coast) were visited twice, but the third tour was cancelled due to illness. PHOTOGRAPH:-THE KATHLEEN FERRIER ROSE. TWO OTHER PIECES FROM THIS LIVE PERFORMANCE ARE ON MY SITE. WE ARE TRULY FORTUNATE KLAAS POSTHUMA PERSISTED IN HIS SEARCH FOR THIS RECORDING. Her final public appearances were in this opera at Covent Garden,London,in February 1953.She was admitted again to hospital the day after the second night's performance. She had fractured her hip on stage the night before. All I can say is WHAT A FAREWELL,for a much loved singer. It wasn't recorded, but this Amsterdam Orfeo ed Euridice will do very nicely.

Dame Hilda is in good voice this evening, and recollects better times when her voice was in it's prime---late 1940's and the 1950's and 1960's. Dame Hilda, and Dr Hinge(Dr.of Music)were a long time musical partnership, rather like Gerald Moore with Schwarzkopf or Victoria de los Angeles. Dame Hilda's top notes have gone, but her voice is none the worse or better for that. Dr Hinge,as ever,is a reliable and sensitive accompanist. TAPED at time of transmission. This is clip 6.THE END.
