Travis Carless, a senior Computer & Systems Engineering major at RPI, is among the winners of the McKinney Contest in the category "Electronic Media" for his video "My Black People ", which is a song written and performed by Samuel E. Simmons, V (a Building Science major). Upon hearing the song at a Black Students Alliance event in the Fall 2006 semester entitled Night of Free Expressions, Travis decided to use the song as part of the final project for his intermediate video class with Prof. Kathy High. Travis shot and edited the footage and produced the video transforming the lyrics into a video image of Black pride and willingness to overcome adversity. After Prof. High's class, Travis considered this to be the greatest video project he had ever done. Upon receiving an email about the McKinney Contest he decided to submit the work and was recently informed of the award.
