Plum Island: "Even More Dangerous" VVH-TV News Special Report (Pt. 2) Department of Homeland Security is seriously considering approving a National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility on Plum Island in Eastern Long Island, NY. The facility would operate at what the government defines as BioSafety Level-4, which is the highest level of danger for biological research. The government defines BioSafety Level-4 as research involving "pathogens that pose a high risk of life-threatening disease in animals and humans through the aerosol route and for which there is no known vaccine or therapy." The Plum Island Animal Disease Center operates at BioSafety Level-3 -- only doing research on animal diseases. There are five other possible sites for the new facility. But the Department of Homeland Security, whose project this is -- and which also now manages Plum Island -- is bullish on Plum Island for it because the other locations on the U.S. mainland all have lots of livestock nearby and Plum Island doesn't. But, on the other hand, Plum Island is off the Boston-to-New York population center of the United States -- with lots of people. And BioSafety Level 4, importantly, involves life-threatening diseases for animals and people, and to top that off, for which there is no known vaccine or therapy. A public hearing was held in Greenport by the Department of Homeland Security on having the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility sited on Plum Island. VVH-TV Chief Investigative Report Karl Grossman was on hand to give us an up close look at both sides of this very serious issue. (c) WVVH-TV 2008 all right reserved

Through grants and technical assistance, the Tony Hawk Foundation helps communities across the U.S. build free, quality, public skateparks in low-income areas to give at-risk youth access to safe, sanctioned places to skate. With over 13-million skateboarders in the U.S. and only about 2,500 skateparks nationwide, most skateboarders are forced to skate in the streets, in parking lots, and other locations where they're often not welcome. Public skateparks provide not only a safe place for them to pursue their passion for this healthy, athletic, and creative activity, but also helps them build a sense of community. The Bridgehampton event is in addition to the foundation's regular West Coast benefit, which will take place in Beverly Hills, California on November 9. Robert Wilson Watermill Center '08 Produced by David Nadal, Kevin Berlin, Reporter VVH-TV Hamptons Television® The New York Times describes Robert Wilson as "a towering figure in the world of experimental theater." His works integrate a wide variety of artistic media, combining movement, dance, painting, lighting, furniture design, sculpture, music and text into a unified whole. A native of Waco, Texas, Wilson was educated at the University of Texas and Brooklyn's Pratt Institute. By the late 1960s he was acknowledged as one of the leading figures in Manhattan's avant-garde theater and has since developed an international reputation as a world-class director and designer. Throughout the world Wilson has staged both original works and productions from the traditional theater repertoire. His non-theatrical art works have been shown in museums and galleries internationally. In addition, his talents as an exhibition designer have graced numerous international venues including the Guggenheim Museum, the National Gallery in Berlin, the Vitra Design Museum, and the Barbican Centre. Each summer Wilson develops new work at the Watermill Center in eastern Long Island -- a theater laboratory which brings together students and experienced professionals in a multi-disciplinary environment dedicated to creative collaboration. The Watermill Center is located on a wooded six-acre site in the Hamptons, Long Island, two hours from New York City. Robert Wilson has designed and developed the facility at Watermill gradually since he acquired the property in 1992. Many aspects of the master plan were realized in collaboration with participants of the Summer Program. Both the building and the landscaped Watermill Center grounds are characterized by the careful arrangement and integration of natural and man-made components. These features bear the imprint of Robert Wilson's aesthetic ideals and shape the atmosphere of the site. 17th Annual East Hampton Sandcastle Contest 2008 With a concept formulated in 1991, by Rossetti Perchik, the 1st Annual East Hampton SandCastle Contest took place on August 26, 1992 at the Atlantic Avenue Beach in Amagansett. In September of 1993 we were approved as a NYS 501c3 Not-For-Profit Corporation under the name of the Clamshell Foundation. The SandCastle Contest has become one of the highlights of the Hampton summer. The name "Clamshell Foundation" was chosen in deference to those on the East End of Long Island who made a livelihood from the waters of Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. Clamshells can be found everywhere. The purpose of the corporation, as stated in our charter, is to enrich the lives of others by fostering education in health, cultural, and environmental fields of endeavor. Currently, we are concentrating our efforts in the area of water quality projects here in the Town of East Hampton, as well as community based concerns such as local food pantries and educational projects. The SandCastle Contest was created not only as a day of fun on the beach, but also to point out how important the waters are to all of us. Contributions to the Clamshell Foundation can help to bring about change, and protect the very reason that we are a resort community For more info contact: www.EHSandcastle.com Copyright WVVH-TV Hamptons Television® 2008 all rights reserved
