The sound of Helms' precise yet bluesy steel guitar helped usher in a honky-tonk sound that would define country music for years to come. The last of Hank Williams' "Drifting Cowboys" is gone. Don Helms died Aug. 11th in Nashville. He was 81. He's intro'd here in 1958 by Justin Tubb.

Harold Franklin Hawkins was known as "The man with 11-and-a-half yards of personality." The 6 foot, 6 inch Hawkins was an immensely popular country entertainer in the 50s and early 60s. He was married to country star Jean Shepard. She was pregnant with Hawkins' child when he perished in the same plane crash as Cowboy Copas and Patsy Cline in 1963. When the boy was born, he was named after his father.
