"The charm of Kettlewell is an abiding charm, and to those of us whose life is spent amid the hurley-burley of city life, the village seems the peculiar abode of peace and quiet beauty; its limestone terraces, with their fringes of hazel and rowan coppices give to the district a characteristic beauty. But the special glory of Kettlewell is not that of colour, but of line. Situated at the junction of the main valley of the Wharfe with side valley, which descend from the Coverhead Pass, Kettlewell is the converging point of many contour lines, and to the eye which delights in the flow and ripple of sky line there is a beauty in Kettlewell which is all its own." This was written nearly one hundred years ago by Professor Moorman but is as true today as it was then. The music is on the Spa Series Tranquility album and is called Secret Place by Tribe.

Alastair Humphreys gave an excellent talk at Darlington, in front of an audience of 40 people, about his 4 year cycle ride around the world. A quarter of the audience was from GASBAGS (Great Ayton & Stokesley Biking & Guzzling Society) and we all very much enjoyed the talk. Alastair was full of enthusiasm and told excellent tales about his ride - astoundingly in just one hour. His books can be bought from his website or from Amazon.

The Royal Birkdale Open Golf 2008 championship starts on July 17th. I visited there in June and walked around the surroundings of the golf course. I could see the massive construction work for all the stands. I hope visiters to the Golf Open also have time to see wonderful Southport.

GASBAGS (Great Ayton & Stokesley Biking & Guzzling Society) cycled round Catalonia in May 2008. This video is based upon photographs of Catalonia. Cycles were hired from Cicloturisme with excellent help from Saskia van Vuuren. We stayed at the Pension Margarit who rapidly sorted out a double booking problem. The Spanish motorists were very considerate with regard to cyclists, and the Spanish people were always very polite and helpful when asked for directions.

On December 15th 2007 Naoko and I walked 20 miles from Great Ayton to Clay Bank, up Hasty Bank, across to Lord Stones then down to Carlton and through to Stokesley and finally home to Great Ayton. We were mesmorized by the walk through the woods on this very cold day. It was like a Winter Wonderland. The snow flakes on the ground were small blocks of ice which had probably been blown off the trees.
