Music & Lyrics: Mac Davis - 1972 On the quiet street in the city A little old man walked alone Shuffling through the autumn afternoon And the autumn leaves reminded him Another summer's come and gone He had long lonely nights ahead waiting for June Then among the leaves near an orphan's home A piece of paper caught his eyes And he stooped to pick it up with trembling hands As he read the childish writing The old man began to cry 'Cause the words burned inside him like a brand "Whoever finds this, I love you Whoever finds this, I need you I ain't even got no one to talk to So, whoever finds this, I love you!" Well, the old man's eyes searched the orphan's home And came to rest upon a child With her nose pressed up against the window pane And the old man knew he'd found a friend at last So he waved at her and smiled And they both knew they'd spend the winter Laughing at the rain And they did spend the winter laughing at the rain Talking through the fence Exchanging little gifts they've made for each other The old man would carve toys And the little girl would draw pictures of beautiful ladies for him And they laughed a lot But then one day on the first of June The little girl ran to the fence... the old man wasn't there And, somehow she knew he was never coming back So she went back to her little room took a crayon, And wrote "Whoever finds this, I love you Whoever finds this, I need you I ain't even got no one to talk to So, whoever finds this, I love you!

Lyrics: We seduce the dark with pain and rapture Like two ships that pass in the night. You and I - a wh*re and a bashful sailor. Welcome to a sunrise of a dirty mind. [Chorus:] All your love is a lie, You're one-night butterfly. Hurt me, be the one Whoever brings the night. The Dark created to hide the innocent white, the lust of night. Eyes so bright, seductive lies Crimson masquerade where I merely played my part Poison dart of desire. [Chorus] Choose a bride tonight, a fantasy for a zombie. Hurt me - I love to suffer. Your harem's a dream for free. Enter, Suck from us and live forever. Rotten beauty Will haunt you for a lifetime. Come with me under water And drown to despise me no more. Unholy, unworthy, My night is a dream for free. [Chorus x2] please leave a comment!!!

Dionne's single with Promises Promises as the "A" side was a big hit released in October 1968 prior to the opening of the Neil Simon/Burt Bacharach/Hal David Broadway smash Promises, Promises. Bacharach wanted to generate as much buzz for the musical and Dionne's Promises, Promises along the showstopping "B" side Whoever You Are, I Love You were released about two months prior to the opening of the show. The strategy paid off and in addition gave Dionne 6 chart hits in 1968 alone, peaking at #19 on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles Chart and #8 on the Canadian charts. Whoever You Are, I Love You, is the most hauntingly beautiful and melancholy tune in the show, but the subject matter (the female lead attempts suicide after her lover abandons her), alluded to in the tune's piano coda, rendered Dionne's superlative recording of the song a little too desolate to make the Promises, Promises single a double sided hit, according to Serene Dominic in his superlative Burt Bacharach: Song by Song. Dionne begins the tune with a quiet desperation slowly sliding into an almost unbearable sadness, loneliness and resignation. Dionne could convey more emotion in a four minute recording than just about any other artist.
