A clip of Noah Golden singing "Ein Madchen Oder Weibchen" from The Magic Flute at his senior voice recital. Here are some notes he wrote about the song in the program.
Ein Mädchen Oder Weibchen --
No, this isn’t a typo. It’s German. As many of you know, opera is not one of my strong points or where my interest lies, as a singer. But, after entering a competition where “no musical theatre” was allowed, Martha chose this song for me. It doesn’t need a hefty, operatic voice and could play off my acting skills. I was psyched until I found out that it was in German; really fast, tongue-twister-y German; twice as long and fast as “how much wood would a woodchuck chuck” but in German – with some extra spitting. I worked on the song and soon, after getting each word right, began to enjoy Mozart’s infectious song about a lovesick bird-catcher. So, if the truth be told, the kid who thought “Phantom of the Opera” was too classical, actually likes singing Mozart.
