We grumble about this and that but when you look at how little others have it makes the little day to day stuff seem insignificant! Go to unicef.ca and give what you can. Rather than taking flowers for dinner on the weekend make a donation that will feed a family or medication to save a life. Your host will understand and thank you. Background song: Cat Stevens - How can I tell you. All credits for the use of the song to UMG and Cat Stevens.

Unicef commercial against war. Designed as a UNICEF advertisement, and with the approval of the family of the Smurfs' late creator Peyo, the 25-second episode was shown on the national evening news after the 9pm timeslot to avoid children seeing it. The scene starts with happy peaceful Smurfs and butterflies, who are then bombed by warplanes, ending with a lone Baby Smurf surrounded by dead Smurfs. The final frame bears the message: "Don't let war affect the lives of children."

HARGEISA, Somalia, 29 November 2007 -- The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) turned 18 last week -- a momentous occasion for children all around the world. It was of particular interest to youths in Somalia, one of only two countries in the world that have not ratified the CRC. Somalia has been in conflict for the past 16 years and many children in the country have grown up not knowing what it means to have the right to education, clean water or protection. Despite the lack of an official treaty, UNICEF is still supporting activities in Somalia that pave the way for the realization of children's rights. At the official level, UNICEF is engaged in advocacy with members of parliament, government ministries and civil society representatives to promote the Convention. NIAMEY, Niger, 18 May 2007 -- Two years after Niger's severe nutrition crisis, the sight of undernourished children is less common than it was, but chronic malnutrition still affects more than 50 percent of the country's young children. And 10 per cent of Niger's children suffer from acute malnutrition, even when the harvests are good. Like many therapeutic health centres across Niger, the UNICEF-supported clinic in Tillabery -- an hour away from the capital, Niamey -- gives Plumpy'nut to severely malnourished children. The high-protein, high-energy, peanut-based paste typically comes in foil wrappers or small plastic tubs, which are practical for children who can easily eat them. For more information please visit http://www.unicef.org/nutrition/niger_39675.html

From 18 to 20 January 2008, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and British football legend David Beckham visited Sierra Leone to call international attention to the issue of child survival. "We can't turn a blind eye to the tens of thousands of young children who die every day in the developing world, mostly from causes that are preventable," he said. Mr. Beckham's visit preceded the 22 January launch of UNICEF's State of the World's Children 2008 report. The report details the continuum of maternal, newborn and child care needed to reduce the number of children under-five worldwide who die every year; currently more than 9 million. In Sierra Leone, under-five mortality rates are the highest in the world; some 27 per cent of the country's children die before reaching their fifth birthday. Sierra Leone also has the world's highest maternal mortality rate, estimated at 1,300 per 100,000 live births. While in the country, Mr. Beckham travelled to the town of Makeni in Northern Province, where he visited a UNICEF-supported health centre and learned about maternal and child health interventions including malaria prevention, immunization, and growth monitoring. He also visited community projects promoting hygiene and other disease-prevention efforts, as well as a therapeutic feeding centre for severely malnourished children. In Freetown, the capital, he met with children affected by HIV/AIDS. Mr. Beckham also played football with children in Makeni and, in Freetown, spontaneously joined a roadside match with young men.

GAZA, Occupied Palestinian Territory, 24 March 2008 -- A renewed round of fighting that began late last month brought chaos and destruction to Jabalia, located at the northern end of the Gaza Strip. The violence exacerbated an already deteriorating humanitarian situation stemming from the near total blockade of Gaza since June 2007. At least 25 children in Gaza were reportedly killed during military incursions that followed cross-border rocket attacks into southern Israel. In the aftermath of the fighting, UNICEF, in partnership with the Palestinian Centre for Democracy and Conflict Resolution (PCDCR), has been working to help distressed children through group counselling sessions. http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/oPt_43341.html
