Telecast March 22, 1952 from Carnegie Hall, New York City for the second movement go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijiHzheK4GQ from an interview by Robert Stumpf II with Bob Bloom, who played with Toscanini: I played for him for six years. He yelled at me a lot, but as a father. After awhile I became, from those in the orchestra, possibly closer than anyone else to Toscanini. Away from the podium, he was like a little child. He loved music. In his study, he would show me Puccini's snuff box, Verdi's eye glasses. He treasured these things. One day I was visiting him and he asked me to stay for lunch. I could tell he was very tired, and we had finished our business, so I told him that I didn't have to stay. I said, "Maestro, you look tired. Why don't you take a nap?" He said, "I've been up since five o'clock this morning studying this symphony." The symphony that week was Beethoven's Fifth. I said, "Maestro, how many times have you conducted that?" He answered, "Oh, hundreds." I said, "And you're still studying it?" I loved his answer. He said, "Well, I'm always afraid I may have missed something." This is how he really felt about music.

Richard Wagner, Prelude to Act III of his opera "Lohengrin" Arturo Toscanini with the NBC Symphony Orchestra, at Studio 8-H, New York City. from TV broadcast of March 20, 1948. Toscanini (born 1867) first performed "Lohengrin" with his school friends in Professor Carini's violoncello school at the conservatory of Parma. He collected a few nicknames at school--"genius" and also "scissors" due to his sometimes sharp criticism. Toscanini received excellent grades and left the school in 1885. The conservatory kept and display a few orchestral scores, plus a romance for vocalist and piano, he composed while there.

Telecast March 22, 1952 from Carnegie Hall, New York City Toscanini's recordings of this symphony from the 20s and 30s show that he used to conduct it with more flexibility and breathing back and forth, but I do prefer these later versions---more direct with stronger flow and propulsive urgent force. The driving clairity and carefully built climaxes still there. He was an early enthusiast of the "original intruments" movement, and would love the clairity and tempi you hear today in the chamber ensemble performances of these symphonies.

Telecast March 22, 1952 from Carnegie Hall, New York City in the notes, Mortimer H. Franks reports that the engineers were unfamiliar with Carnegie Hall, and that explains the less than ideal camera shots and directions. Also, the hot lights got the 85 year old Toscanini sweating so much that by the end of the symphony he had to close his eyes and bear it! He never telecasted another concert live again.
