This is where the majority of the parts on our supply shelves come from. We maintain a massive archive of "junque" collected from old and recycled gear. It's all perfectly good and useable parts, thousands and thousands of dollars of gear that would have otherwise ended up at the bottom of a landfill or a scrapmetal pile. We pull anything that is useful, test it, and reuse it in future projects. Only the true Junk is finally tossed in the scrap heap.

Here's what I think of that response: how about stop being such a geek and just play some music, then? Otherwise what's the whole point of being a geek? That's why the first video was cool and yours wasn't.

Watch in full-screen! The Geek Group presented their amazing musical Tesla coils at DragonCon 2007 in Atlanta. The coils are not simply discharging in time to the music; the music is coming from the coils themselves. The Geek Group has its official videos under username "thegeekgroup." (Music: "Glass Danse" by The Faint)

I replaced the small muffin fan on the spark gap with a vacuum cleaner motor. The gap is quenching much better now. I also moved the tap on the primary coil out a little. This has increased the arc length to 38"+. Please check out The Geek Group at www.thegeekgroup.org

A better video of the Tesla coil. 15,000 volt 60mA neon sign transformer, 20KV .015uf MMC capacitor bank, multi segmented spark gap with .24" total gap distance, 4.5" diameter secondary with about 1000 turns of 26 gauge magnet wire, 15 turn primary tapped at the 12th turn. 32" arcs to grounded target. Please check out the geek group at www.thegeekgroup.org

First light after about an hour of tuning. 32" arcs from breakout point to grounded target. The crappy video quality is due to the fact that I used a digital still camera on video mode. The auto focus kept tweaking for some reason. Please check out the geek group at www.thegeekgroup.org

We went a little improv during a Q&A session with a group of 11 year olds. We ended up torching our mannequin head in the process, and having a really fun time doing it.

We're thrashing on the overhaul of the entire lab facility. Here we empty our entire warehouse in one week to turn the room into our new soundstage.

While we were setting up and tuning Gemini after a set of upgrades the neighbors happened to notice. They were throwing a party next door and saw the arcs through the windows so we invited them in for a quick up-close look at our lightning machine.
