Microsoft Unveils New Browser-Based Video Platform at NAB in Las Vegas -- Major League Baseball, Netflix and Brightcove will use Silverlight We've been reporting on developments with Microsoft's new online video platform which had been called Windows Presentation Foundation Everywhere (WPF/E). Today (Monday) in Las Vegas at NAB, Microsoft is taking the wraps off the new platform which is called Microsoft Silverlight. It's all part of the new Microsoft Expression initiative. It won't go live for another two weeks, but we have the demo on Beet.TV (below). Like the ubiquitous Adobe Flash video ecosystem, Silverlight will provide a range of authoring and encoding tools to create rich media, notably video. Like Flash, the new video will play on the browser (IE, Safari, Firefox) with the download of a 2 MB application. Microsoft is selling authoring tools and there are editing and encoding programs to render the files which are based on Windows Media Video (WMV). Pinnacle and Microsoft Movie Maker work. If you're editing and rendering in Final Cut Pro on a Mac, like we do at Beet.TV, you will need to purchase software to encode to the VC-1 video standard. In a new development since we first reported this, Silverlight files can be hosted on all major servers, including Linux -- not just on Windows Media servers. Microsoft is announcing partners in this new initiative including the big CDN players Akamai and Limelight. Also onboard is Netflix, which will stream movies starting in June, Major League Baseball and Brightcove. On Sunday, Brightcove CEO Jeremy Allaire told me about company's plans with Microsoft on this new initiative. The former key Macromedia executive said that his company's commitment to Adobe and Flash is deep and strong and will expand. But, he sees a place for Microsoft's new platform at Brightcove. Here's what said in an e-mail exchange: "We also plan to introduce support for streaming VC-1, which will offer a high-quality, cross-platform and secure format for commercial media in our platform. As we do more business with major broadcasters, including CBS, Fox, MTV Networks, etc., it's important to be able to support multiple formats and technology for content protection that is accepted by the media industry." In advance of the show, we were very fortunate to interview Microsoft's Forest Key who explained this initiative. Known as the "man behind Expression," Forest is also a former Macromedia executive. His overview of Silverlight is above and a very cool demo of the platform is below. See this video on Beet.TV: http://www.beet.tv/2007/04/microsoft_unvei.html

APPLE will host its iPhone special event this morning at the company's Town Hall. Steve Jobs is expected to reveal plans for allowing third-party applications to be installed on the iPhone. Apple's invitations for the event also promised "some exciting new enterprise features." MICROSOFT has decided to use the video player of MOVE NETWORKS in Silverlight. Move's software adjusts video quality in real-time to match a user's Internet connection speed. It is already at work on sites for ABC, ESPN, FOX and more. The deal is a major boost for Move. Its plug-in software will be distributed with every copy of Silverlight, which Microsoft is expected to push aggressively. CBS is streaming the most online video of the major networks, according to comScore's latest data. In December, the network streamed 104 million minutes of content. NBC streamed 62 million minutes, ABC streamed 28 million and FOX did a lowly 2 million minutes. In related news, NBC released data showing that 77% of online NBC Rewind viewers use the service to complement regular television viewing. The network also claims it is seeing an increase in brand recall rates and that viewers find the online video ads less disruptive than traditional TV ads. LANDMARK COMMUNICATIONS is accepting preliminary bids for The Weather Channel and interested buyers reportedly include NBC, CBS, Disney, Time Warner, Comcast and Liberty Media. Landmark has previously said it is seeking $5 billion for the property, which includes weather.com — one of the top 20 sites with over 30 million users. The first round of non-binding bids ends tomorrow. ZIFF DAVIS has filed for bankruptcy protection, citing problems stemming from the declining print business.

http://www.uberpulse.com/us/2008/02/silverlight_and_air_competition_is_a_misconception_adobe_cto_says.php So here you have it, another misconception finally cleared. According to Kevin Lynch, Adobe's CTO, Microsoft Silverlight is more a competitor of Flash than AIR, Adobe's desktop runtime for web applications. As competition goes, interestingly, Lynch sees the Mozilla's Prism project a much more able candidate. At the cocktail hours at the Adobe event, I had a chance to drill more on Lynch's competitive landscape views. 1) With Silverlight, Microsoft really has Adobe's Flash team on its toes, making sure they stay on top of new features, etc. But as far as AIR is concerned, this is a totally new ballgame where Microsoft is not yet playing. That perhaps explains why the guys in Redmond are spraying some FUD around the danger of using Web apps on the desktop. 2) Mozilla's Prism project is a much closer competitor to AIR. However, Lynch quickly dismissed it pointing that Adobe is up to 2 years ahead on the Mozilla folks on the concept of running Web apps on the desktop. 3) Browsers could also be seen as competing with AIR, especially with plug-ins like Google's Gears for Firefox and Internet Explorer that lets you run web apps offline. But Lynch argues that user will be confused with the user interface, as you still will see the traditional Web buttons, toolbars, tabs, etc... in what should be a classic desktop application. Makes sense to me. And you? http://www.uberpulse.com/us/2008/02/silverlight_and_air_competition_is_a_misconception_adobe_cto_says.php

Microsoft's Silverlight Will Power Live Video Streaming Here's the second of two interviews with Microsoft's Brian Goldfarb, who heads product development for Silverlight. Beet.TV was in Redmond last week for a series of interviews about the Silverlight launch and its implications. Brian outlines the two fundamental implementations of Silverlight: as a media platform for streaming video -- and as a rich, interactive application market. Brian explains that live streaming is a "growing phenomenon" and that Silverlight provides live streaming, along with interactivity layered onto that live stream. We think that live streaming will really take off. We've heard this over and over in interviews with Adobe, Akamai and Justin.TV. It's going to be a big fundamental development in the months ahead. -- Andy Plesser Posted on Saturday, September 08, 2007
