the hedonistic bollywood movie industry is shown herein it's true light with humor ,satire and an insight into the minds of the characters who are actors themselves ,it is a uniquely tender examination of the indian psyche as both childish and innocent, benevolent yet malevolent . the hypocrisy becomes a delight ,the tradition a spoof and religion a joke . yet ruth-ivory discover some genuine moments of truth passion and shashi and kendall are superb though zia is tedious and irksome at times as he takes it too seriously, still a very interesting look at the art form of bollywood and it's intrinsic conspiracies .some sexual content in the clip is not for kids .the dialogues are penned with great taste in english by ruth prawar and ivory directs with his usual underplayed style which is so affective here and in heat and dust ,where shashi gave another great performance but in this movie the neurotic adventurer played by a discontent anglo visitor to bollywood by jennifer is the highlight as she almost acts others off the screen with her tantrums and mood swings ,some might find the ending implausible though it is rather offbeat ,the whole movie is immersed in a dark, satirical aura with a tongue -in -cheek humor and adoration for bollywood at the same time instead of being condescending and that makes it rather a spledid fare in being humane in understanding other perspectives contrary to the other one-dimensional looks at bollywood by other western observors who cannot see beyond the song dances and their nose as well .
