A Severe Thunderstorm with winds to 60 mph comes through, with a shelf cloud in the lead. There was just a little lightning, and the thunder was difficult to hear due to the wind and precip. The Bow Echo was about 75-100 miles long, and was a rare early January event, fueled by warm air ahead of a cold front, and a cold core upper low just to the west. Hail, wind damage and street flooding was reported with the line.

On Monday morning the SPC (Storms Prediction Center) issued a moderate risk of severe weather for the east coast including Virginia and North Carolina. The videoographer took the day off to chase through the day as he knew there was a chance of storms early in the day as the warm front moved through the area. As he thought, the storms pushed their way through north central North Carolina leaving behind hail and some wind damage reports through Raleigh. He headed south from his home in Portsmouth, Va. to Elizabeth City, NC. Watching the radar and the storms pulsing some as they started to move into the area, they seemed to have exploded just west of the city. The mobile threatnet had a shear marker showing 92mph on the northern end of the line just about 2 miles or less from where he was. As the rain started to fall, the wind picked up quickly and gusted near 45mph. There were large bolts out ahead of the main line and he had video rolling on it. Once the rain began to fall heavily, he pulled back and started to move back to the north up Rt. 17 toward Virginia. As he laid my camcorder down, of course, a bolt flies across the road in front of me and struck a tree less than 20 yards away. Once back in Virginia, he went to Virginia Beach and picked up fellow chaser William Coyle. They decided the best plan would be head west down Rt. 58 toward Emporia where they would meet up with another chaser from Richmond, Bill Hark. They watched data from SPC for watches issued, and radar and satellite images. As expected, a tornado watch was issued for just about all of Virginia and North Carolina around 4pm. As the storms started to take shape to their west, they noticed that the isolated storms they were looking for were not going to happen. Soon severe thunderstorm warnings were being issued for the cells as they moved out of the mountains and headed their way. As the storms "lined" out, they jumped on I-95 north and hauled it to Petersburg hoping to find a spot to pull over near an open field and shoot some lightning as the storms approached. Well, the storms were moving a little faster than thought, and they met the line just south of Petersburg near Hwy. 629. They headed east trying to stay ahead of the line as the storms began to "gust out" quickly. William and him reached Rt. 460 and quickly turned south. They figured we would stay out front, stop along the way and shoot as the storms pushed east and southeast into Hampton Roads. Well they stopped near Waverly and set up to shoot the last daylight images of the massive gust front as it approached. They shot for about 15 minutes, quickly got back into the truck and headed south once again. Once they reached Rt. 58 and approached the city of Chesapeake they ran into a hail core where the hail was about penny to marble sized. They got on I-64 west and ran into another hail core in Bowers Hill and it was slightly bigger and coming down harder and longer. The road looked like it was getting covered in rock salt. They drove about 2 miles and we were back into the rain. So they ended up going to a gas station on Independence Blvd. and Virginia Beach Blvd. to shoot video and photos of the lightning.

A severe thunderstorm northeast of Guymon, Oklahoma on May 15, 2003. The strong inflow created by this supercell monster is obvious in the adjacent wheat field. At the 43 second mark, note the distant light on the horizon goes out due to a power outage. Thirty minutes later this storm produced a tornado in Liberal, Kansas. The storm was taped from County Road 19, a paved east-west road between Adams and Optima, and a north-south dirt road labeled Mile 45 and also N1000Rd. I was parked on the dirt road just north of the intersection and the camera was aimed west and northwest. Severe thunderstorms involve rapidly lifting air which is sucked in mostly at or just above ground level. On this storm I was on the southeast side which is generally where the strongest inflow will be due to the prevailing winds on the high plains. On this day the winds were southeasterly long before the storms formed, hence the wind from that direction was amplified by the storm's influence. I was standing on the lee side of my car, hanging onto the tripod to prevent it from being blown away, and my legs were being stung by blowing sand from the dirt road on which I was parked.

http://live.pirillo.com - I love living in the Seattle area, because I'm a big fan of overcast skies. This is in sharp contrast to my home state of Iowa, where's there's severe weather of all types nearly every other day. Severe weather is terrifying, to be sure. However, it's also beautiful and many people love to see it on video. Blog post: http://chris.pirillo.com/2008/06/09/where-can-you-watch-severe-weather-videos-online/

Search "May 30, 2004 Severe Weather" And Watch All Six Parts Of This Series Right Now. This video was taken on the night of May 30, 2004 where a squall line of intense thunderstorms moved across Illionis, Indiana, and Ohio. Numerous tornadoes were reported from this line in Indiana and with some supercell thunderstorms well ahead of the line eariler in the evening. This being a Sunday night and a Holiday weekend, it was an extremely dangerous event for most considering that it was dark outside but the lightning was so intense, it was almost like daylight again. I live right at the I-75/I-70 interchange where the line snaked down the interstate. We received just about 3 inches of rain in the guage out back of my house. This day held the single event record for most tornado warnings issued in the Miami Vallley of Ohio in one day until June of 2008.

Early this evening, 4-13-07, we had some tornado warnings and severe storms. The footage I got looked relatively harmless but that storm caused at least one tornado in the Metroplex. There was a lot of damage reported and at least one fatality. I am just an amateur and I needed some practice. So I took some footage. There are different sequences. A little hail, some tornado sirens, wind blowing trees, and dark clouds. I'm sure if you search more youtube videos some locals of the DFW area have some similar footage uploaded to the site. Update: This storm caused two fatalities, not one as mentioned in the video. Also it is said that there may have been 3-5 tornadoes involved in the storm. As you may be able to tell, I was inspired by the movie 'Twister' as I edited this. Music is by Ilya Gordon-"Hang On" available for free download at download.com.
