Im driving on the new Seddon Bridge which is 274m long and is not long opened ,
The original bridge has
serviced the road between
Blenheim and Seddon for
the past 103 years. It was
designed by Peter Seton
Hay of the Public Works in
1897 as a double-decker,
with the train on top and
road underneath. The
bridge was the longest, at
325m, of its type in New
Zealand. In 1899, the
contract to build the bridge
was let to Scott Bros Ltd of
Christchurch for 22,002
pounds. It was finished
early in 1901, then a
windbreak was added to
protect trains from
northwesterly gales. The
bridge was opened in 1902,
and had cost around 23,216
pounds.
