SUBSCRIBE, for a brand new song every Sunday! and friend me on myspace! http://myspace.com/abbysimons Lyrics: My scientist shows me a picture of a Big red circle with a green smudge on top He points says, "this is an apple" I say, "ok, an apple" He says, "very well done" He says, "you are a woman, and I am a scientist I am a human and well, You're something else" He says, "this is existence, oh welcome to existence" and then he flips my switch and turns me off My scientist wears think-rimmed glasses And he works in a lab And he doesn't sleep much My scientist stares into microscope Scratches his head and he doesn't say much I say, "hey Mr. Scientist, let's go outside, you talk about outside, but you never go out" He says, " I am a scientist, I got work to do, when work is done I will go out" My scientist sits on the corner of his bed He is crying so I ask him what's wrong My scientist says, "you are dying" And I say, "what is dying?" And he says, "nevermind" And we sit there together on the corner of the bed And nothing else is said We just sit there together And I touch his hand and he touches mine And then he flips my switch and turns me off My scientist stands with his back turned Waiting for the answers to appear before his eyes My scientist didn't see it coming And when he fell it didn't make a sound So I carry him back to the corner of the bed And I put a pillow under his bloody head And then I stand up, brush off, turn out the lights And I walk to the door and go out side

Avril singing (LIVE) Coldplay's cover song "The Scientist". (Lyrics) Come up to meet you, Tell you I'm sorry, You don't know how lovely you are I had to find you, Tell you I need you, Tell you I set you apart Tell me your secrets, And ask me your questions, Aww let's go back to the start Runnin' in circles, Comin' our tails, Heads on the science apart Nobody said it was easy It's such a shame for us to part Nobody said it was easy No one ever said it would be this hard Aww take me back to the start I was just guessin', At numbers and figures, Pullin' the puzzles apart Questions of science, Science and progress, Do not speak as loud as my heart Tell me you love me, Come back to haunt me, Oh when I rush to the start Runnin' in circles, Chasin' our tails, Comin' back as we are Nobody said it was easy Aww It's such a shame for us to part Nobody said it was easy No one ever said it would be so hard I'm goin' back to the start -------- Song from Only Avril http://www.avril-l.org/ Movie: Wicker Park (Featuring Josh Hartnett and Diane Kruger) Original song by Coldplay.

PlusScientist: DNA Led Agents to Anthrax SuspectScientist: DNA Led Agents to Anthrax SuspectThe Associated PressA government scientist says DNA from the bodies of people killed in the anthrax attacks helped lead investigators to the suspect. He says investigators matched specific DNA patterns to cultures Bruce Ivins was responsible for. (August 3)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] The investigation into the anthrax killer is being called the F-B-I's most expensive and compelling undertaking ever. The agency spent more than 10 million dollars and recruited top genome researchers from across the country to find out who was responsible for the 2001anthrax attacks.Bruce Ivins killed himself last week as prosecutors prepared to indict him on murder charges in connection with the case.A government scientist...who spoke to the A-P on the condition of anonymity...says D-N-A was taken from the bodies of those who died...then researchers used new genome technology to identify the anthrax strain that killed the victims. They eventually linked that specific type of anthrax to the biological weapons lab run by Ivins.((SOUNDBITE: Pauline Duggan, Bruce Ivins neighbor: We knew that Bruce worked at Fort Dietrich, we knew that he worked with pathogens. You know, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that they might be looking at him.)) The Army lab had long been on the F-B-I's radar....but the technology used to track down Ivins was either unavailable or too expensive to use on a regular basis up until 3 years ago. 5 people died and 17 others were sickened by anthrax-laced envelopes sent through the mail in the weeks following the September 11th terror attacks. Officials say the Justice Department is expected to decide within the next few days whether to close the investigation.

Google Tech Talks June, 11 2008 Title: "Levy Processes and Applications to Machine Learning" ABSTRACT: Nonparametric Bayesian methods are a generalization of probabilistic models where the prior distribution can be a stochastic process, a distribution over a possibly uncountably infinite number of random variables. The great flexibility of these methods has led to applications in natural language processing, machine vision, computational biology and other fields. I will introduce Levy processes, which generalize several of these methods. Levy processes are random measures that give independent mass to independent increments. As an example I will show how they can be used to model various types of data such as binary vectors or vectors of counts, with applications to text and images. These techniques are related to the better known Dirichlet process. Speaker: Research Scientist - ROMAIN THIBAUX

Google Tech Talks June, 13 2008 ABSTRACT Research Scientist - Assaf schuster Title: "A Geometric Approach to Detecting Global Properties over Distributed Data" Abstract: A basic construct in many distributed systems is the detection of global properties over distributed data. Examples include a wireless sensor network where we would like to be alerted whenever the average of the temperature readings taken by the sensors exceeds a given threshold, or a distributed search engine where the set of search terms whose frequency of use is above a given threshold must be determined. Until recently, research has focused on detecting global properties that are defined by simple aggregates (e.g., sum, average, or minimum) over the distributed data. In many cases, however, global properties of interest are expressed by more complex functions. This is the case, for instance, when the goal is to detect when the variance in sensor-network readings is in excess of a threshold, or when the set of pairs of search terms whose correlation exceeds a threshold is to be determined. Such tasks typically require that all the data be collected to a central location, incurring very high communication costs. In this talk I present a novel geometric approach for efficiently detecting a wide family of global properties that are defined by the value of an arbitrary function on the distributed data vis-a-vis a given threshold. The global property is split into a set of constraints applied locally at each node. As long as the local constraints at all the nodes are satisfied, the global property is guaranteed to be satisfied as well, and no communication is required. I begin by presenting the geometric detection method and show how it is applied for efficient detection of complex events in a distributed streaming setting. Time permitting, I will also show how it can be used for determining top-k queries over distributed databases. Speaker: Research Scientist - Assaf Schuster

Aug 2 - A senior US government scientist who helped investigate a series of deadly anthrax attacks in 2001 has died from an apparent suicide. Law enforcement officials said Bruce Ivins, 62, who worked for the last 18 years at government biodefense research laboratories at nearby Fort Detrick, Maryland, took an overdose of painkillers over the weekend and died on Tuesday in an apparent suicide. Pavithra George reports.
