Though controversial to acknowledge among progressive circles, McCain has displayed fleeting flashes of populist courage at times during his career...Obama, in a shorter career, has shown more populist strength, and far more consistently than McCain who has subsequently tacked back to the Royalist Right in the 2008 presidential campaign (more on that below). As opposed to McCain, Obama has backed up his populism with Senate votes, racking up a reliably progressive record on economic issues and sponsoring legislation attempting to curb the influence of lobbyists. He also is far more comfortable publicly championing the cause of regulation than McCain, who during one of the first aftershocks of the credit crisis, initially proposed doing nothing at all. Most often, action and votes like those of Obama's are more important than McCain's mere words. But a presidency is nothing if not a bully pulpit, so it is at least good that both McCain and Obama are talking more tough. What should worry us the most is how both candidates have decided not only to build campaign warchests with Wall Street cash, but to personally surround themselves with the very insiders who helped create the current financial crisis in the first place. McCain's campaign, for example, employs an army of lobbyists representing the specific companies now helping pull down the American economy. As the Center for American Progress reports, McCain "has the former lobbyists of AIG, Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers, and Bank of America on his campaign staff." Obama is far better than McCain in that he doesn't employ lobbyists who helped create the culture of corruption that compelled Washington to sit idly by as the economy tanked. However he does rely on a cadre of people who may be ideologically opposed to the forceful kind of New Deal populism that is going to be necessary to address the crisis. McCain's top economic adviser may be UBS vice-president Phil "Nation of Whiners" Gramm, but Obama's economic guru is UBS's Robert Wolf - Gramm's boss...Despite the two candidates sharing similar ties to Wall Street, Obama is nonetheless better positioned to confront the crisis ahead, both because of his party structure, and his own personal history. The central organizing force of the Republican Party is fealty to Big Business. While corporate front-groups have certainly impacted the Democratic Party, the party's progressive wing is ascendant. If that wing administers real pressure on Obama, it can successfully provide the political space and capital for Obama to pursue the more aggressive regulatory policies needed to quell this crisis. Likewise, Obama's roots as a community organizer, civil rights lawyer and progressive lawmaker signal that at some deep level, he appreciates the value of confronting corporate power. By contrast, McCain's most famous experience dealing with the financial industry was his involvement in the Keating Five scandal. As the New York Times reports: "Several former company executives, as well as current and former Senate Republican staff members, said Mr. McCain seemed to avoid matters related to the financial industry after the last major financial crisis -- the savings and loan crisis of the late 1980s. He was one of the 'Keating Five' senators investigated by the Senate, accused of interceding with federal regulators for the operator of a failing thrift." Obama may not yet be as forceful as FDR and may not have yet articulated a New Deal, but McCain and his Keating Five past all but guarantees that the Arizona senator is no Teddy Roosevelt. While both candidates could be better than the current administration (that's not saying much), one is clearly better equipped to tackle this burgeoning emergency. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-sirota/mccain-obama-wall-street_b_126613.html

If governments do not intervene, industries will meet the growing demands for energy in the cheapest way possible, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions will increase. That puts Jeroen van der Veer, CEO of Royal Dutch Shell plc, one of the world's leading petroleum companies, in an odd position: a leading capitalist campaigning for more government regulation.

Will Federal Banking Regulations Force Online Casinos to Fold? Until recently, online casinos operated outside of the reach of the United States Government. Now, in an innovative effort at law making, Congress has charged banks and other financial institutions with preventing the operation of online casinos in the US market. By requiring banks to shun transactions from gambling sites, Congress hopes to cut off the interaction between sites and their customers on US soil. Whether this will be successful is unknown. This discussion will explore what the new regulations will do to both the banking and gaming industries. More importantly it will examine whether this is an appropriate and acceptable form of law enforcement. Will this law overburden banks by making them the agents of the federal government, or will it be an easy to incorporate standard that will make banks more secure? Should online gambling be outright prohibited in the United States or should Congress merely regulate and tax this activity? These and many other questions will be explored during the lecture. Speakers include: Steve Verdier, Senior Vice President and Director of Congressional Relations Group for the Independent Community Bankers of America Houman Shadab, Senior Research Fellow, Mercatus Center Regulatory Studies Program Michael Borden, Office of Congressman Jim Leach Moderated by: Gavin Young, Counsel for the Senate Judiciary Committee.

If I were having to guess what is going on, I think Big Oil installed Ms. Palin into an under-populated state in response to their losing Ted Stevens due to being caught by the Federal Government in a sting operation. They needed a shill, and what better way to get back control than to run a 'reformer' in the race ? PROBLEM IS, you can see from this video, she'd rather not regulate or keep tabs on BIG OIL - in fact, on ANY of the energy industry. Does that sound like CHANGE to you? Do we see what just happened to the American Economy when lack of regulation and oversight hits an industry with lots of money changing hands? AND SHE WANTS TO LET IT HAPPEN WITH THE OIL INDUSTRY??? Do you call this someone who wants to CHANGE Washington for the better? For Americans struggling? Or for Big Oil? Sorry about the drop outs in audio - it isn't in the original so not sure what happened - but here are the drops in order host (:29) - first..., host (:31) - independent of saudi ara..., host (:35) - millions, host (:41) - reagan-esque thing sorry about that - didn't want to try and upload again so fixing it here

Bill O'Reilly wants Regulation of the Internet. That is the last straw. The SOB has now gone too far. Net Neutrality and a totally free Internet is the only way to go. Without this, we the people will no longer have ANY free speech zones. Just like many have warned in the past, The Corporations and the Government will scream for regulation and control because of "Terrorism" on the Internet. We must not allow this to happen. http://www.newshounds.us/2008/09/23/bill_oreilly_internet_hacking_is_terrorism.php Bill O'Reilly was the sole guest of FOX and Friends for three segments this morning 9/23/08, promoting his newest book and giving his trademark spin on issues of the day. One topic touched on was the recent hacking of Sarah Palin's private email account, and O'Reilly, himself the recent victim of hackers at his website, was predictably over the top in his response. "The federal authorities need to design a whole new string of laws to deal with these people, he said, and "...it's not Big Brother that's spying on you, it's citizens turning on each other. [snip] The federal government has to get a handle on this, because this is terrorism. This Internet stuff, it terrorizes little kids through bullying, it can do so much damage to people, and the feds just don't have a handle on it." Note how he blithely dismisses all the new "security" measures, the cameras and wiretapping, the airport searches and data gathering, to focus on some random incidents of hackery. Not to defend any hacking, but what is really a bigger threat to Joe and Jane Consumer, random hacks or coordinated accumulation and sharing of private and personal data by banks, insurers, healthcare entities, schools, local government, utilities, the military, phone companies, retailers, and who-knows who else? If Bill O'Reilly is calling for governent regulation of the internet, he is endorsing Big Brother. There are already laws in place that will deal with this hacker. Again, not to defend hacking, but the information garnered from this act has raised more questions about Sarah Palin: her husband's role and influence, her secretiveness, and her willingness to operate outside the rules of her office. FOX and Friends did not address these issues at all, just the illegal means used to get the information. Once again FOX does its job for Republicans and obfuscates important information.

On the Maddow Show, David Sirota and Rachel Maddow discuss McCain's long record of opposing regulations, his recent flip flop and his involvement in the Keating Five scandal. Via the NYT: "Speaking in Florida, he [McCain] said that the economys underlying fundamentals remained strong but were being threatened because of the greed by some based in Wall Street and we have got to fix it. But his record on the issue, and the views of those he has always cited as his most influential advisers, suggest that he has never departed in any major way from his partys embrace of deregulation and relying more on market forces than on the government to exert discipline. While Mr. McCain has cited the need for additional oversight when it comes to specific situations, like the mortgage problems behind the current shocks on Wall Street, he has consistently characterized himself as fundamentally a deregulator and he has no history prior to the presidential campaign of advocating steps to tighten standards on investment firms." http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/16/us/politics/16record.html?_r=2&hp=&pagewanted=all&oref=slogin&oref=slogin
