After quitting her day job in Los Angeles and moving to Martha's Vineyard, a quiet island off the Massachusetts coast, Susan Gibbs aka MVKnits had a great idea. She started Martha's Vineyard Fiber Farm and figured out how to make a living making yarn. Why not use the local food movement's model of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and apply it to a yarn harvest? Shareholders pay for a share in the yarn harvest as a way to support a local farm (or in this case, a local farm supported through the internet) and in return they get weekly updates, photos from the farm, an invitation to the shearing and ultimately a share of the yarn. Etsian Tara Young aka weirdwolf headed to Martha's Vineyard to visit Susan Gibbs and her fiber farm. Music by Barry London and Charlie Parr.

From Mark Diamond Holographer/Artist (DiamondImages.com): In 1990, I was invited to an inter-tribal Pow Wow in Washington, DC by the late Melody Lightfeather. I was planning a series of holographic portraits of indigenous peoples for over 10 years .... this event coincided with the 20th anniversary of Earth Day....The Secretary of the Department of Interior had invited many Native American tribes to participate...and granted us permission to film the first of these holographic portraits in the auditorium of the department of interior in Washington D.C.and then on the mall where the groundbreaking and blessing of Native American Museum was to be held. It is my hope to convey a sense of reverence and respect for the Earth and its indigenous peoples as well as preserve and share these traditions visually through this powerful anthropological study and holographic series. This video of the footage is accompanied with permission by the music of Bill Miller an extraordinary Native American composer/ performer more at www.billmiller.com

In October of 2004, photographer Alec Soth went on assignment for LIFE magazine to capture weekend soldiers at an Airsoft military simulation in Joelton, Tennessee. In anticipation of his upcoming Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program exhibition, filmmaker Mike Dust traveled alongside Soth for this three-day excursion, interviewing and shooting alongside him as he worked to capture images for, both the magazine shoot as well as for his personal work. A number of these photographs (Odessa, Joelton, Tennessee, 2004 and Josh, Joelton, Tennessee, 2004) became part of the exhibition Alec Soth: Portraits at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts the following spring. The video piece created during that shoot was installed in the gallery as an accompaniment to the exhibition. The video is broken into three segments entitled On Assignment, Portraiture, and The Ground Glass. Produced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Department of State in partnership with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, this brilliant propaganda piece plays in international airport arrival areas while foreign visitors wait to run the Customs gauntlet, getting fingerprinted, searched and verbally abused by agents of our oh-so-welcoming Government. It seems like a lot of people are either better at drawing women and have trouble with men, or vice-versa. Usually females have an easier time drawing females and males have an easier time drawing males. So I wanted to do a side-by-side comparison of some of the differences when drawing males compared to females. I know that the presentation is a bit weird and awkward, but it's the best way I could think of to show the differences. I included a colouring portion to show some of the concerns that need to be taken into account when colouring also. I had no idea what to call this, hence the crappy title. Hope it helps some people. Roughly half of all American homes have guns. But, why? Because it is our constitutional right? For protection? For the joy of hunting and sport? In 2004 after a fractious election in which the gun argument played a significant part, photo-journalist Kyle Cassidy hit the road to learn why so many people owned so many guns. His search for answers took him on a journey that extended over two years and 15,000 miles. Ultimately, more than a hundred gun owners opened their doors and their lives to him, answering the single question he asked: "why". The result is a collection of striking and thought provoking photographs: ARMED AMERICA: Portraits of Gun Owners in Their Homes (Krause Publications; August 2007; Hardcover). Few issues generate as much debate as firearms. Without taking a pro or con stance, ARMED AMERICA shows the faces of American gun owners and gives voice to each individual "why"...without ancillary comment, editorializing, or judgment. These "everyman" portraits reveal people from different backgrounds, living in various locations, with one common connection.
