4th session of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission meets on Guam to discuss sustainability of tuna stocks in the region yet new measures will likely play an important role in increasing tuna levels. Monitoring regulations in our own national waters need to be strictly followed. Greenpeace is calling for the establishment of marine reserves in the international waters. Greenpeace says the commission must cut tuna harvesting by 50% overall in the Pacific for the local industry to have a future. http://www.kuam.com/news/25547.aspx

http://www.goodmagazine.com Professor Martin Schreibman says our oceans have been overfished beyond repair. If we're going to keep eating fish and chips, tuna tartare, and all those omega-3 fatty acids, we may have to rely on aquaculture. Schreibman is working to bring those fish farms into the city. Urban aquaculture? We'll bite.

February 1996 Green mounds only a few metres apart rise out of the glassy, blue sea. Under the water, fluorescent fish dart through strands of orange corral. The island of Palau is a paradise on earth. It has been voted number one wonder of the underwater world. But all this beauty faces the threat of rampant tourism. Since independence in 1994, the people of Palau are seeking to rePlace US funding with revenue from an ever expanding tourist trade. Although, such economic growth will generate jobs, there is great concern for the environment. Palau's second industry, fishing, is also making an impact. As giant tunas are lifted by cranes from the fishing boats, conservationist Noah Idechong is acting to safeguard fishing stock. He has persuaded local chiefs to reinstate the "bul", an ancient law which bans fishing in major breeding grounds. In revitalising traditional customs, he has the support of Palau's vice president, Tommy Remengesau. There is hope that this young nation will mature with its environment and its cultural identity in tact.

A video for 'Ruled by Secrecy' by Muse. Video footage taken from episode 'Coast' part of the series of BBC documentaries entitled 'The Blue Planet'. I think the song refers to a book by Jim Marrs of the same title, which explores how society may be controlled by underground or secret societies - I remembered seeing The Blue Planet episode and thought it would go well with this song. The seals are clearly getting shafted by the Orcas (Killer Whales) but are the seals controlled by the Orca or has the situation arisen because another 'body' has over-fished the Orca's natural food source? I dunno I'm not an environmentalist, I just like making music videos =/ repress and restrain steal the pressure and the pain wash the blood off your hands this time she won't understand change in the air and they'll hide everywhere no one knows who's in control you're working so hard and never in charge your death creates success rebuild and supress change in the air and they'll hide everywhere no one knows who's in control change in the air and they'll hide everywhere no one knows who's in control 由Secrecy 统治 gouverné par le secret! I heard this song played and sung by a guitarist called Martin Simpson who I happended to think is one of the best performers going. The song is about coal mining in Caledonia, not in Scotland, but on the East Coast of Canada. It has some interesting references that when know help to understand the song in a better context. Number 3 refers to my number 3 and also with reference to scataree, this was a fishing area that over time became over fished and therefore it's a reference to never. The work brocken is a term for shoes, I would think something like brogues. As the song unfolds there is reference to 'A lass from Boulardrie Over', this was a very well to do area, so clearly the young lad became infactuated with a fantasy he just couldn't afford, she being well above his station and like most men turned to drink, when troubled with a women's love. I myself turn to a good cup of tea.... typically English.

Professor of Biological Sciences, Stephen Palumbi, will take us on an interesting journey through time to explain how the Monterey Coast arose from its once polluted and overfished past to be one on the most beautiful and coveted shorelines of the United States. Though not pristine, it is an example of the successful rebirth of an environment. Do you like eating fish? Did you know that around 75% of the world's fish stocks are now fished to their limit or over-fished? We can eat some species of fish with a clear conscience, but others are being eaten to extinction. Oxford-based band Stornoway has recorded a song that tells you which are which. 'The Good Fish Guide' is based on the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) guidelines to ethical fish consumption. It will be released as a downloadable single via the Truck label, an environmentally proactive record label, with all profits to the MCS. "This is such a great song! Its hilarious!" Earlier this morning, some 200 Greenpeace activists from 14 countries arrived at the annual meeting of the European Union Fisheries Council meeting where EU fisheries ministers were to gather for their annual meeting on fishing quotas. In front of surprised bureaucrats and security personnel, the activists blocked the seven entrances to the building and began constructing a wall in front of the main entrance. The Fisheries Council holds its annual meeting today to decide levels of total allowable catches . But according to Greenpeace, the Council's consistently dismal record provides a poor basis for the management of European fish stocks. "We have shut down the building untill the fish stocks recover because the fisheries ministers have shown us since years their incompetence. Nearly seventy five percent of the fish stocks are overfished", said Greenpeace campaigner Iris Menn. Since the early 1980s, mismanagement of fish stocks on the part of the Fisheries Council has resulted in an alarming decline in fish stocks in European seas. According to Greenpeace, the EU needs to take urgent measures to protect fisheries and the marine environment. Such measures would include the establishment of a network of large scale marine reserves, areas off limits to all harmful human uses. Greenpeace's blockade was not welcomed by all visitors to the Fisheries Council meeting. But other meeting delegates took a lighter approach and attempted scaling the fence around the building. According to Greenpeace, the decision making process around fish stocks should be taken out of the hands of fisheries ministers. The environmental organisation is asking for the environment ministers to take over with an integrated environmental protection policy, "We would like to see the environment ministers take over the whole responsibility for the protection of the ocean because they have the protection of the ocean as their first priority instead of the fisheries ministers having economic interests as a top priority" said Greenpeace campaigner Iris Menn, By the end of the morning, police started to arrest the activists and opened up one of the side entrances to the Council building to enable delegates to enter.

With most of the sharks and tuna being overfished, the next best thing in the sea is large turtles. They taste just like chicken. The best part is that it is a total rush yanking one of these beasts in. we caught this one about 2 miles from block island, RI on 10-18-07 on a red plastic balloon. Turtles are pretty easy to catch, you just put a jelly fish on a hook and suspend it in the water. Sometimes when we are feeling sporty, we go with artificals and jig a plastic bag filled with water, looks like the real thing you know. so anyway, we were really just fishing for tuna and the the turtle came up and got hooked in a balloon holding up the bait. He popped his head up and was starting at the balloon for a minute until he saw us, then he took off. Unforutnatly, when he took off, he got tangled in teh line and kept pulling it until he was hooked. We pulled him in and resolved the issue which meant snapping the line as the attempt at unhooking was just taking to long. Later in teh day, we looked under the boat, there were millions of little translucent jellyfish about 1" long that were packed in tightly all along the area. You would have never noticed them unless your face was about a foot away as they were so clear and small. It was no wonder he was there so late in the year. anyway, there is a story for you couch potatoes..

shark fishers catching a shark on the beach, if there are small ones, there are big ones too Blacktip Shark Blacktip sharks are one of the most common shark species found inshore off the coast of Florida. Although the majority of shark bites in Florida are likely attributable to this species, there has never been a fatal attackcredited to this species in this region. Scientific name: Carcharhinus limbatus Distribution: Off the east coast of the United States blacktip sharks range from New England to Mexico but are most commonly found between North Carolina and Texas, especially in spring and summer. Habitat: This shark inhabits shallow coastal waters and estuaries and offshore surface waters. Blacktip sharks use shallow inshore waters from South Carolina to Texas as nursery areas for their pups in spring and summer. They can be found in groups as young or adults feeding in shallow water. Life history: This species is a relatively fast growing shark, reaching maturity at about 4-5 years of age and living longer than 10 years. Number of pups per litter is usually 4 to 6. Maximum size of blacktips off the U.S. eastern seaboard is about 6 feet in length Management: In the Atlantic, blacktip sharks are part of the large coastal shark management group, which is overfished; commercial and recreational fishing regulations are in place for this species. In the Pacific, blacktip sharks are not landed in commercial and recreational fisheries and no management measures are in place for this species. Finning is prohibited. Fast Facts About Sharks Sharks are vulnerable to fishing pressure because they: Grow slowly Take many years to mature (12 to 18 years in some species) Often reproduce only every other year Have few young per brood (only 2 pups in some species) Have specific requirements for nursery areas (bays and estuaries) Are caught in many types of fishing gear (hook and line, gillnet, trawl) Sharks have adaptations allowing them to be apex predators including: Teeth that are replaced throughout their life Sensitive smell receptors Eyes that adapt quickly to low light levels Lateral line receptors that sense movement in the water Electroreceptors that detect electrical fields due to the presence of prey Taxonomy The blacktip shark was first described by Valenciennes in Muller & Henle (1839) as Carcharias (Prionodon) limbatus. It has also appeared in the literature as Carcharias (Prionodon) pleurotaenia, Carcharias microps, Carcharias (Prionodon) muelleri, Carcharias maculipinna, Carcharias ehrenbergi, Carcharias aethlorus, Gymnorrhinus abbreviatus, Carcharias phorcys, and Carcharhinus natator. The currently valid scientific name is Carcharhinus limbatus (Müller and Henle 1839). The genus name Carcharhinus is derived from the Greek "karcharos" = sharpen and "rhinos" = nose. The species name "limbatus" originates from Latin, meaning bordered in reference to the black markings on its fins.
