Let's establish one thing right out of the gate: We love the band Sigur Ros. Their music is beautiful and moving, so much so that it doesn't matter that they're singing in a totally made-up language. Sigur Ros is four lads from Iceland, and recently, they were in New York to screen a new concert film Heima at the New Yorker Festival. Their P.R. folks called and asked if we wanted them on the show, to which we quickly replied, "hells yeah". Anyway, last Friday the band showed up promptly at 11am (EDT) and commenced to give what is possibly the worst interview in the history of electronic media. Seriously. It was that bad. We're not sure if they were tired, or if it was a language thing, or what... but wow. Whereas most shows would just bury an interview like that, we've decided to actually show it to you. It certainly made us laugh. We hope you'll enjoy it too. And to repeat, we love this band. We are going to be the first people to buy their new album "Hvarf / Heima" when it comes out this November. And the concert documentary is beautiful -- please go see it if it comes to your town. Just never invite them on your radio show.

New York City folksinger Christine Lavin wrote the song, THE NEW STREET PEOPLE, to encourage smokers to quit smoking. As students at River Ridge HIgh School & learning t.v. production skills with their library/media specialist teacher, Courtenay O'Connell, Andrew Ortoski, Jayme Hill, Kat Nece, & Anka van Zyl (named the New Port Richey Bodacious Buttkickers by Christine Lavin) created the music video for the song. This video won county, district, state, and international awards in the FAME competition in 2004. It won recognition in the Independent Film Festival that same year, sponsored the the Tampa Education Channel. In 2005, it won first place in the Friends of the Tarpon Springs Public Library, Inc., Sol Peska Film Competition. In 2006, KORR-TV5's Scott Dyl created a quicktime movie of the video for uploading on the school's website, but now, as a member of YouTube, others can see it now! Now, are you ready to quit smoking? Then go to this site for help: http://www.howcast.com/videos/364-How-To-Quit-Smoking

An interview of Suzanne Haïk-Vantoura, Dr. Benjamin Duschene, and Robert Boschiero in Paris, France by Luanna Parker, as part of NPR's Morning Edition with Bob Edwards ("The Song of Songs", Program #861029, 1986). With the limited number of suitable slides and photos that I have, I have filled in the material given in the interview, sometimes attempting to answer some questions raised and errors made therein. Some of the slides will take concentrated reading to absorb; please feel free to stop the video at any point in order to do that! For more information, please see www.rakkav.com/biblemusic, www.shofargroup.org. www.savae.org, and (in French) www.estherlamandier.com.

A vivid portrait of the turbulent 1930s and the Roosevelt administration as seen through the WPA's Federal Theater Project. Under the direction of Hallie Flanagan, a daring 5-foot dynamo, the Federal Theater Project managed to turn a WPA relief program into a platform for some of the most cutting-edge theater of its time. This unique experiment by the U.S. government in support of the arts electrified audiences with exciting, controversial productions, created by some of the greatest figures in 20th century American arts—including Orson Welles, John Houseman and Sinclair Lewis. Plays like Voodoo Macbeth and The Cradle Will Rock stirred up politicians by defying segregation and putting the spotlight on the inequities that led to the Great Depression.

Tuesday, October 03, 2006 By host Tom Ashbrook: Noam Chomsky may be the world's most widely-read super critic of American policy, but even his books got a boost in sales last month when Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez waved one on the floor of the UN General Assembly and implored gathered heads of state to read it. A boost as in Number One on Amazon.com. Chomsky made his name as a brilliant scholar of linguistics, but for decades now he has been a brutal critic of American power and its uses. Admirers call him a hero. Critics call him a self-important ranter.
