An increasing number of congregations offer worship services that are either fully in sign language or are interpreted for deaf people. The Jehovah's Witnesses, which began ASL interpretations of spoken services in the 1940s, has been one of the leaders in deaf outreach in recent decades. Deaf churches have been around since the late 1800s. Four Inland Jehovah's Witness kingdom halls -- similar to churches -- offer meetings entirely in ASL or have sign-language interpretation of spoken meetings. Many members of the San Bernardino Jehovah's Witness deaf ministry grew up as Catholics or members of other faiths, said Michael Gallagher, an elder with the ministry who is almost fully deaf. Gallagher's parents required him to attend Catholic Mass even though he did not understand it. When Gallagher, 56, of Colton, first started attending Jehovah's Witnesses meetings in 1975, there were ASL interpretations only of spoken meetings. In 1989, the first entirely ASL Jehovah's Witnesses congregation was set up in New York. Today there are more than 100. Gallagher said interpreters cannot always capture the full meaning or spirit of what speakers are saying. "Some of the brothers would speak really fast and the interpreter would miss some of the information," he said through an interpreter. "It caused a lot of stress on us and the interpreters. Being in a full sign-language congregation, we feel more involved." The San Bernardino kingdom hall is outfitted with two video screens and a wall upon which ASL communicators' signs are projected. Bible on DVDs Jehovah's Witnesses are creating an ASL version of the Bible on DVD so viewers can watch a verse-by-verse ASL reading; several books of the Bible already are available. A Mormon ASL Bible and Book of Mormon were released several years ago. Some deaf people have little or no understanding of written English, so Bibles and religious readings can be unintelligible. ASL has different syntax than English. American Sign Language convention The Jehovah's Witnesses are holding four conventions this summer in American Sign Language. A district convention for deaf and hard-of-hearing Jehovah's Witnesses began Friday and lasts through Sunday at the organization's assembly hall in Norco. The hall is the region's major meeting place for Jehovah's Witnesses, and this convention is the largest of three special assemblies held here annually, said Pasch McCombs, a volunteer who helps publicize the organization's events. Jehovah's Witnesses applaud using American Sign Language on Friday at the organization's assembly hall in Norco. A district convention for deaf and hard-of-hearing Jehovah's Witnesses lasts through Sunday. The convention includes a series of presentations on topics from the Bible and how to be guided by God in daily life. Baptisms will take place Saturday, and on Sunday attendees can watch sign-language Bible dramas, which have been acted out and filmed in a studio and are shown on DVD. About 2,000 people a day were expected at the Norco convention. Jehovah's Witnesses, both as a religious denomination and as an organization serving the deaf, are "growing very rapidly," said convention overseer Richard Burton. "Just in this last year, there have been 23 new sign-language congregations formed in the United States," Burton said. While McCombs said the convention audience will be predominantly deaf and hard-of-hearing people, he and Burton and other hearing people there can speak and sign, and often do both simultaneously. Daniel Holguin, of West Covina, said he and his wife began learning sign language in 1997. "My daughter's deaf, and that's the reason we learned sign language and came here," Holguin said. Heather Davis, of Santa Rosa, center, sings using American Sign Language Friday during the three-day Jehovah's Witnesses convention in Norco. It was difficult to find out his daughter couldn't hear and then to learn a new language, he said, but the church's deaf ministry was welcoming. His parents are Jehovah's Witnesses, so the conventions are nothing new for him, Holguin said. "I've been coming to conventions like this all my life," he said. "A lot of good, practical information is brought forth." The convention continues today and Sunday at the Norco Assembly Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1001 Parkridge Ave.
