During a lunch break Domenico (Sandro Panseri)gets together with Antonietta (Loredana Detto) a girl he spotted also trying to get a job with the company. Ermanno Olmi's 1961 film took Italian neo-realism a step further by using real people instead of actors in real locations. Panseri and Dotto were picked from the streets by the director and had no acting experience. Neither continued in acting. Panseri became the manager of a grocery store, and the beautiful Loredana Dotto married director Olmi and was satisfied being his wife and mother to their children.

Teenager Domenico (Sandro Panseri) is forced to end his life as a student and travel to Milan to take a test in the hopes of landing a job with a big corporation. Ermanno Olmi's 1961 film took Italian neo-realism a step further by using real people instead of actors in real locations. Brilliantly photographed and framed, Olmi's protagonist steps from the world of childhood into the de-personalizing world of the self-contained corporation. We follow Domenico as he reluctantly leaves his village on the outskirts of Milan, a place making the slow transition from rural to suburban, to the modern urban world being overgrown with corporate building.

Antonio Ricci (Lamberto Maggiorani)is one of lucky ones in poverty striken post war world 2 Italy and lands a job putting up posters. Unfortunately, he hocked his bicycle, a necessity for the job, to feed his family. His wife (Lianella Carell) comes up with the bitter answer. Director Victorio de Sica's 1948 film is considered the epitome of Italian neo-realism, and a cinema masterpiece. The film brilliantly captures the desperation of poverty, with mere survival hanging on a thread (in this case a bicycle). Powerful in its emotional involvement, de Sica's film is filled with powerful visuals. In this clip, the opening of the movie, three shots worth multiple viewings: 1. The men gathered at the steps behind Ricci, as his mention of the "broken" bicycle brings a momentary glimpse of hope of a job for the others. 2. After Ricci and his wife enter their apartment, we watch from the kitchen as she leaves him standing in the hallway to place the buckets of water in the kitchen. 3. After proudly and excitedly giving his claim ticket for his bicycle, Ricci watches as a worker takes the recently hocked family bed sheets, and climbs a towering wall shelved hocked bed sheets. The Bicycle Thief was awarded an honorary Oscar for best foreign language film before the category became an Academy Award.
