This is an experimental piece loosely based on Mugham Sega, one of the most commonly performed mugham-s. The mugham system is a collection of 7 main scales or modes each with their own particular character. This music is played throughout the Caucasus region. The shevi (shepherd's flute) which I chose as the solo instrument, was intentionally played with long extended notes in a manner similar to the kamancha (bowed fiddle) and duduk using less ornamentation than is commonly heard. Also, I chose to base the piece on a progression of rhythms associated more with folk dance music than mugham performances. Basically this is an experimental hybrid from which new musical ideas were generated. It was recorded in one session with no editing.
