Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2006/06/26/Will_Wright_and_Brian_Eno "The Sims" designer Will Wright demonstrates the user-created "metaverse" from his latest game, "Spore," with additional commentary by musician Brian Eno. ----- Will Wright and Brian Eno on "Playing with Time." In a dazzling duet Will Wright and Brian Eno give an intense clinic on the joys and techniques of "generative" creation. Back in the 1970s both speakers got hooked by cellular automata such as Conway's "Game of Life," where just a few simple rules could unleash profoundly unpredictable and infinitely varied dynamic patterns. Cellular automata were the secret ingredient of Wright's genre-busting computer game "SimCity" in 1989. Eno was additionally inspired by Steve Reich's "It's Gonna Rain," in which two identical 1.8 second tape loops beat against each other out of phase for a riveting 20 minutes. That idea led to Eno's "Music for Airports" (1978), and the genre he named "ambient music" was born. The Long Now Foundation was established in 01996* to develop the Clock and Library projects, as well as to become the seed of a very long term cultural institution. The Long Now Foundation hopes to provide counterpoint to today's "faster/cheaper" mind set and promote "slower/better" thinking. We hope to creatively foster responsibility in the framework of the next 10,000 years - The Long Now Foundaton

Derek Lerner 2007 Digital video 04:39:00 minutes 640 x 360 pixels Soundtrack: La Muchacha de Los Suenos Dorados composed by Harold Budd, Daniel Lentz, and Ruben Garcia For the last year I have been heavily involved in virtual worlds, primarily Second Life. This has prompted many thoughts about the concept of virtual space in general as well as blurring lines between simulation and real. Mixing of realities, infinite space, multi-user online 3D collaborative environments, and time travel. When asked to contribute work to the NOKIA Trends Lab project I immediately started to think about the level of connectivity and immersive experience handheld wireless hybridized multifunction devices offer, resulting in a type of virtual space. The sense I get when walking down the street taking photos, listening to the radio, & then uploading images to a server is of a disjointed reality where one's mind is in another place but body is walking down the street. Inspired by this, I used a NOKIA N93 to film video feedback loops creating abstract video drawings as a metaphor for 3D immersive virtual space. Infinite syndicated regurgitated communicative white noise evoking feelings of becoming so intertwined with digital communications that the grayness of life as we currently know it is a blurry place of virtual and real.

Google TechTalks March 1, 2006 Philip Rosedale and Cory Ondrejka ABSTRACT Linden Lab is the producer of Second Life, an online world with a growing population of subscribers (or "residents"); currently, the community has well over 140,000 residents from 91 countries. By providing residents with robust building and scripting tools, Linden Lab enables them to create a vast array of in-world objects, installations and programs. Since its early stages, Linden Lab has allowed its residents to retain full IP rights over their own creations, thereby insuring that their contributions to the community remain truly their own.

'Anita (Teen Body Shapes Line)' is a 3D animation film, set at Second Life. Directed by Steve Beck. Produced by Metaverse Machinima. Distributed by Metaverse Branding. Sponsored by Metaverse Store. Anita (Teen Body Shapes Line) is made by Metaverse 3Designs, an in-world company within Second Life real-time virtual 3D environment. We work dynamically on sensori-emotional, functional and simbolic values to achieve the elegant, aesthetics and stylish look you need! Teen Line Body Shapes is inspired by Lolita (1955), a novel by Vladimir Nabokov. The novel is both internationally famous for its innovative style and infamous for its controversial subject: the book's narrator and protagonist, Humbert, becoming sexually obsessed with a young girl named Dolores Haze. After its publication, Lolita attained a classic status, becoming one of the best known and most controversial examples of 20th century literature. The name "Lolita" has entered pop culture to describe a sexually precocious young girl. The novel has been adapted to film twice, once in 1962 by Stanley Kubrick starring James Mason as Humbert Humbert, with Sue Lyon as Lolita, and again in 1997 by Adrian Lyne, starring Jeremy Irons as Humbert Humbert, and Dominique Swain as Lolita. All Teen Body Shapes Lines, made by M3D, are 18 Years Old, or Over. You must be 13 years of age or older to access Second Life; minors over the age of 13 are only permitted in a separate area, which adults are generally prohibited from using. Shintaro Miyazaki aka Maximillian Nakamura (SL name) played with avatar orchestra fellows in SL a mixed reality concerts at wien modern 2007 (24th of November). http://www.avatarorchestra.org/ composer: Andreas Müller (aka bingo onomatopia) The Onomatophone was created out of the idea to build an instrument with rean 3-dimensional sound. The result is an instrumnt that separates the control-interface from the sound-generation: six spheres sending out audio fly right through the audience, thus giving everybody a unique, continuously changing mix. W.N.K. is not only a song I made for AOM but also a proof of concept that loop-based/rhythm-oriented music can be arranged/performed/mixed live in SL. Hence the dance/Drum'nBass loops. I simply wanted to see if they play back in sync in laggy live situations. These drum-loops are taken from the web or were freebies from synthesizer magazines; of course I processed them and did not use them unedited. The other loops were (like the rest of the samples used here) created from my library of field-recordings: There are, for examples the heating of a flat I once lived in for a while, a metal lid covering the public water-systems at the place we go to for flying kites and riding sleigh, the mouse-clicks of my old Atari and so on. Technically, it as a project for learning the coding of LSL (Linden Scrpting Language), I had to create an interface controlling the sounds as well as the movements of the spheres - plus visual feedback for the audience (and player) as the buttons change color when clicked. After a few performances I changed the concept a bit and removed the controls from the in-world instrument (only left the visual representations) and moved this functionality into a HUD. I had had a hard time during performances telling the audiences not to click the buttons all the time and not to stand between me and my instrument - something nobody deliberately did in order to annoy me, but because nobody is acquainted with an Onomatophone. Violins, Pianos and Guitars are well known and nobody dares to touch them without invitation, but this is not the case with an experimental instrument where it is not even obvious at first sight that this IS an instrument. In order not to make this a solo-piece for me, I extended the instrumentarium and created a special HUD for Miulew to do the vocal/solo role, so the general arc of tension for the whole song would not have to rely on me alone remote-controlling loops. The rest of the orchestra has HUDs to add percussive spice to the whole thing. video by Michael Zacherl

The idea is basically to get people to answer these four little big questions: 1. What excites you about current metaverse technology? 2. What concerns you about current metaverse technology? 3. What will be most the surprising impact of metaverse technology on society within the next decade? 4. What barriers will metaverse technology never overcome? Our hope is to build a time capsule. Feel very free to join us by adding your video to our open group at: http://youtube.com/group/metaverseu This idea was first described at: http://metaverse.stanford.edu/building-time-capsule Go here for some basic concepts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaverse http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_world

Shintaro Miyazaki aka Maximillian Nakamura (SL name) played with avatar orchestra fellows in SL a mixed reality concerts at wien modern 2007 (24th of November). http://www.avatarorchestra.org/ composer: Björn Eriksson (aka miulew takahe), june 2007. The piece is a play with words "fragment", "fragile", "fragula" and "Dracula". The visual part of this piece is made from small and big movements and animations of avatar while having the sound sack being colored in different colours. fragulasketch One of the major ideas about this piece is to have the orchestra to wander from a fragile and fragmented digital synthezised sound texture into a more analog acoustic and not so fragmented sound texture, and then come back to where it all started. This is aurally symbolized in the granulated synthezised sounds of sine waves, square waves and sawtooth shaped sounds. Also arpeggiated synthetic figures then gradually transforms into the sounds of an old harmonium with unprecise playing. There is also a transitional sound in between the digital and analog sound sources where a time stretched harmonium sounds gets this role. There is three groups of players in this piece as the different sounds forms chordal sound textures. Bingo Onomatopoeia/Andreas Müller made these programming of both sounds and animations for HUDs. video by Michael Zacherl
