Aug 2003 Japanese athletes have discovered a new source of strength -- hornet saliva. Killer hornets may be Japan's deadliest creature but they are also one of its most popular. They are considered a delicacy and turned into a potent sake. But perhaps the strangest use for them is on the Japanese gym scene. Their saliva, believed to provide a energy boost, has been turned into a sports drink and is creating a huge buzz.

NEW ORLEANS, May 19, 2008 (AP) -- A title defense endures for the playoff-savvy San Antonio Spurs. Manu Ginobili scored 26 points, hitting four free throws in the final minute, sending the Spurs to the Western Conference finals with a 91-82 victory over the New Orleans Hornets on Monday night in Game 7 of their second-round series. Tony Parker added 17 points, including a crucial jumper in the final minute, as the Spurs held off a late rally to become the first team in this series to win on the road. "We really believed we had a chance to win on the road here,'' said Spurs forward Tim Duncan, who had 16 points and 14 rebounds. "It's just a lot of confidence. A lot of games under our belt.'' With a nucleus of Chris Paul, David West and Tyson Chandler, the Hornets appear destined for greater things, but now is not their time. "One thing I want them to remember when they start working out next season is how they feel right now,'' said Hornets coach Byron Scott, adding he was proud of his team, which did not make the playoffs last season, for pushing the Spurs as far as it did. "You have to go through some things before you can really understand how good it's going to feel when you get to that next level,'' Scott continued. "You don't go from not making playoffs to winning a championship. It just doesn't work that way. ... We're headed in right direction.'' Now the Spurs and their championship ring-laden trio of Duncan, Ginobili and Parker will be traveling to Los Angeles to face the Lakers in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals on Wednesday night. West led the Hornets with 20 points, while Paul and Jannero Pargo each added 18. Chandler had 13 points and 15 rebounds for the Hornets, who cut a deficit as large as 17 down to three inside the final two minutes. While the Hornets managed to hold Duncan under 20 points by crowding the inside, his Spurs teammates combined for 12 3-pointers to keep alive their chance to win back-to-back titles for the first time. "We knew the shots were going to be there. It happened today that we just made more,'' said Ginobili, who made four 3-pointers. "We just let it fly.'' The win also gave Spurs coach Gregg Popovich 100 playoff victories, moving him into a tie with Larry Brown for third on the career list. The Hornets had dominated the third quarters of their three previous home games in this series. This time, the Spurs, who have won four titles in the previous nine seasons, had an answer. It was their calling card: stingy defense. The Hornets, down by nine to open the period, could not manage consecutive baskets throughout the quarter, never getting closer than seven. New Orleans went nearly a three-minute stretch without a basket before Paul hit a pair of free throws to close the gap to 58-50. Michael Finley then responded with a 3-pointer and Parker added a jumper, putting San Antonio up 63-50. New Orleans finally began to look overwhelmed by the magnitude of the moment, even missing open shots. Peja Stojakovic shot an airball on an open 3-point attempt. West missed an open 12-footer. The Hornets shot 5-of-17 for the quarter. "What we did today was play better D in the third quarter,'' Popovich said. "We held them down and it really was about that for us.'' New Orleans continued to play solid defense inside, holding Duncan in check and limiting San Antonio to 6-of-18 shooting in the quarter. But that didn't help much with the Spurs hitting clutch shots from outside. Finley added another 3, as did Robert Horry, and Ginobili's free throws gave San Antonio a 71-54 lead late in the period. Buoyed by a home crowd that stood throughout the fourth quarter, the Hornets fought back to make a game of it, largely behind Pargo, who had done little in this series. He scored seven straight on four free throws sandwiched around a 3-pointer, pulling the Hornets to 81-77 with 3:10 to go. Pargo made another 3 to cut it to 83-80 with about 1 1/2 minutes to go, then attempted another for the tie with a minute left, but it rattled out. Parker drained a jumper on the other end with 50 seconds left to make it 85-80, and New Orleans could not recover. After a tight first quarter, the Spurs opened the second period with a 12-5 run, capped by Parker's driving layup as he was fouled, giving San Antonio a 36-25 lead. Paul's driving floater off the glass turned the tide, sparking a 12-0 run that included 3s by Stojakovic and Morris Peterson. Stojakovic's baseline jumper briefly put New Orleans ahead 37-36, but Ginobili came back with a 3, Parker a driving layup and Duncan a short fade to put San Antonio right back in front. Ginobili then hit two more 3s on consecutive possessions, restoring the Spurs' double-digit lead at 49-38 with under a minute to go in the half.

An athletic 33 points from MJ on efficient shooting. Bulls lost though on the game's last possession. I also included a few plays of MJ getting doubled and trapped to please the "MJ thrived in the isolation era" crowd. He faced multiple guys so many times in this game in fact that I could have made a 5 minute video on that alone. NEW ORLEANS, May 3, 2008 (AP) -- Hornets coach Byron Scott showed off the three championship rings he won as a player during his pregame speech. The message? This is what the San Antonio Spurs have, and you want. He certainly got through to All-Stars David West and Chris Paul. West scored a career playoff-high 30 points to lead New Orleans to a 101-82 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 1 of their second-round playoff series Saturday night. Paul added 17 points, 13 assists and four steals for New Orleans, which trailed by as much as 11 in the first half but stormed into the lead for good in the third quarter. "It sort of gives you goose bumps," Paul said of seeing Scott's rings, won in the 1980s with the Los Angeles Lakers. "We understand right now we're on that same journey and we feel like we can get there." One reason they're off to such a good start against San Antonio is the way they played defense on Spurs center Tim Duncan. Duncan had what he considered one of the worst games of his stellar career, going 1-of-9 from the field for a career playoff-low five points and only three rebounds. "Things just didn't go my way," said Duncan, who offered only a few terse comments in the locker room. "They did a great job. ... I played badly, so credit to them." Tyson Chandler was Duncan's primary defender, but the Hornets also swarmed Duncan with double teams throughout the game, forcing San Antonio to look for points from outside. The Spurs hit 12 3-pointers in the game, but also missed 19. The Hornets dominated the inside, outrebounding San Antonio 50-34 and outscoring the Spurs 46-26 in the paint. The Hornets also shot 50 percent, while the Spurs finished at 40.8 percent. Chandler had 10 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots for New Orleans. Peja Stojakovic added 22 points for the Hornets on 9-of-15 shooting, while reserve Bonzi Wells added 10 points, all but two in the fourth quarter. Tony Parker led the Spurs with 23 points and Manu Ginobili had 19. Bruce Bowen added 17 points and Michael Finley 13, but San Antonio needed more help inside from Duncan and Kurt Thomas, who had only two points and two rebounds. "They took away our inside game. Timmy had a rough night," Parker said. "We need to do a better job to get him the ball and try to get him some shots, basically. Tonight, New Orleans did a good job to take that away from us. That's not Timmy." After trailing most of the first half, the Hornets surged into the lead for good with a 13-0 run in the third quarter that opened with Chandler's driving layup and ended with Stojakovic's second 3-pointer of the game, giving New Orleans a 61-54 lead. West scored four points during the run and 11 in the quarter, often hitting midrange jumpers, sometimes while fading away from a defender in his face. "David West is the one that really, really hurt us tonight," Parker said. "He made outside shots, and once he made his outside shots he was having the drive, so we can't all focus on Chris Paul." The Hornets led 74-66 heading into the fourth quarter. Jacque Vaughn's driving layup got the Spurs as close as 76-71 early in the period, but the Hornets, despite being in the playoffs for the first time in four years, were not rattled. They pushed the lead back up to double digits before turning it into a blowout during the last 5 minutes, with Paul scoring seemingly at will. "We've been in that position where everyone is kind of waiting for the wheels to fall off of this thing, feeling like we are overachieving," West said. "But we're a hungry group of guys, we're going to go out and compete." The Hornets scored the first eight points of the game, with Stojakovic and Morris Peterson each hitting 3s, and San Antonio didn't have a point until Parker's free throws with 7:36 left in the first quarter. It didn't take long for the San Antonio to settle down, however, and they didn't need much help from Parker or Duncan. Ginobili hit his first four shots, including three 3s, and Bowen hit three 3s of his own as the Spurs stormed back to take a 27-23 lead at the end of the first quarter. New Orleans fought back to take a 35-34 lead on Chandler's alley-oop dunk of Paul's lob, but Bowen, who minutes earlier had been face down on the floor with his hands over his face after apparently getting poked in the eye on foul by Wells, hit two more 3s, one while being fouled. Finley had another 3 during a 10-0 run that put San Antonio up 44-35. The Spurs finished the first half 9-for-17 on 3s, and with a 49-45 lead.

CLEVELAND, March 26, 2008 (AP) -- Along with countless assists, Chris Paul has given teammate David West a rather unique nickname. "I call David West the 17-foot assassin," Paul said. The Cavaliers now know why. West calmly dropped a 17-foot jumper -- coming on Paul's 20th and most impressive assist -- with 0.6 seconds remaining to give the New Orleans Hornets their fifth straight win, 100-99 over Cleveland on Wednesday night. LeBron James' driving layup had given the Cavaliers a 99-98 lead with 7.7 seconds left before Paul and West, the Hornets' All-Star duo, teamed up for the game-winner. With the 6-foot-8 James guarding him up top, Paul, who had just one turnover in 42 minutes, took an inbounds pass and drove left, picking up a screen near the foul line. Paul then drove deep in the lane, drawing three defenders before spinning and whipping a pass back to West. West then knocked down his shot on the exact play Hornets coach Byron Scott had drawn up during the team's previous timeout. "We knew we were going to have a chance to get the ball to Chris Paul and let him create," Scott said. "We knew we were going to get a good look at it. If we got the shot, we didn't want to leave a lot of time on the clock. It was .6 when David nailed it. "It worked to perfection." Cleveland got the ball to James, whose 75-foot heave at the horn rattled off the 24-second clock at the other end. James, who barked in frustration at teammates earlier in the fourth quarter, punched his hand in his fist and complained to assistant coach Mike Malone before heading to the locker room. Following a postgame ice bath, James had cooled way down. "If we get a stop, we win the ballgame," he said. "We played pretty good defense. We bottled him (Paul) up, but with eyes in the back of his head, he found David West." Peja Stojakovic scored 25 points -- 18 on 3-pointers -- West added 20 points and Paul 15 for the Hornets, who came in with the Western Conference's best record and improved to 2-0 on a six-game road trip against Eastern Conference teams. New Orleans, playing the second game of a back-to-back, snapped Cleveland's nine-game home winning streak and improved to 22-11 on the road. "We're battle-tested," Paul said. "We have a lot of veterans on the team. When we put our starting five out there, I'm the youngest guy on the court. If I'm the one with the least experience, we're in a good situation." Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored a season-high 29 points with 15 rebounds. James had 21 points and eight assists, but wasn't able to get a defensive stop in the closing seconds against Paul, one of his closest friends. Anderson Varejao added 15 rebounds for the Cavaliers. Two free throws by James brought Cleveland within 96-95, but the Cavs couldn't get a rebound at the other end and Tyson Chandler's putback dunk put the Hornets ahead by three with 47 seconds remaining. Following a timeout, James missed a left-handed layup but Ilgauskas tipped it in to make it 98-97. On the Hornets' next trip, Jannero Pargo was left wide open in the corner on another bad defensive rotation by Cleveland but missed a 3-pointer. James then drove past Stojakovic for a layup with 7.7 seconds left to give Cleveland a 99-98 lead. But the Cavaliers couldn't prevent the ultra-quick Paul from getting deep penetration on the Hornets' last possession, leaving West with enough room to get off his shot. "When we're in that situation, if he makes it, that's great, we win," Paul said. "If he misses, we still got a great shot." The Cavaliers had expected to have back guard Daniel Gibson, who has been sidelined since Feb. 20 with a badly sprained left ankle. However, with a favorable break in the schedule -- Cleveland doesn't play again until Saturday -- the Cavs decided to give him and center Ben Wallace, nursing a sore back, more rest. Cleveland could have used someone to slow Paul, who finished one assist shy of his season high and has 29 in two games against the Cavs this season. "That's why he's the best point guard in the league," James said. "He gives them a confidence." With the MVP candidate orchestrating everything for New Orleans' offense and Pargo making three 3-pointers while playing the entire second quarter, the Hornets, one of the league's best perimeter shooting teams, opened a 56-50 lead at halftime. Notes: Cavs radio announcer Joe Tait broadcasted his 3,000th game with the franchise. ... Stojakovic (1,389) moved past Antoine Walker into eighth place in career 3-pointers. ... Browns quarterback Brady Quinn sat courtsidesat . ... Of all the players in the NCAA tournament, James singled out Davidson sophomore Stephen Curry as the one he's most eager to see play at the next level. "He's a very, very, very, very, very good basketball player," James said. "I don't know if he's coming out (in the draft) this year. When he does, he has a spot."
