This is a documentary I, together with my teammates (headed by me), made for a non-government organization called Center for People Empowerment and Governance. "Ang Ating Buhay" explores the newfound life of the Ati (a Philippine cultural minority) community in Barangay Sitio Maislap, Montalban, Rizal. They were resettled there by the government after being demolished from their former whereabouts in the Wawa River allegedly by the request of the owner of a nearby resort. Will their new location and lifestyle equate with the gradual death of their culture, traditions, and language? Anyway, I am proud of this documentary because it was chosen to be screened at Balay Kalinaw, UP Diliman during the honoring of Bienvenido Lumbera (National Artist for Literature) by CenPEG.

What is really going to happen? We may write a really good bill in the House, something Wall Street really hates. Then it goes over to the Senate where 41 Senators out of 100 is all it takes to block it. I don't think they will defeat reform legislation in the Senate. They will delay it and then they will dilute it. And by the time it passes, it will be so diluted, Wall Street will drink it down with a smile on its face knowing that no effective reform is really being imposed upon them. So we are not going to see meaningful regulatory reform; although we will pass something and Wall Street will tell you it is a big deal. We will see million-dollar-a-month salaries, or one-and-a-half million or $2 million a month salaries paid to the executives of these firms while they are getting a bailout with our taxpayer money. We are going to see a very large percentage of this money going to buy securities, bad paper, and toxic assets currently in safes in Shanghai, Beijing, London and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. We will see all of the power in the hands of the Bush administration and in the hands of a part-time temporary administrator, namely the Secretary of the Treasury. Under this bill, if it passes, we don't really know what is going to happen to the economy. No one knows. The only thing that is certain, two things: Wall Street executives are going to get huge amounts of money and our children and grandchildren are going to get stuck with hundreds of billions of dollars of additional Federal debt. And we as a country, having just done a bad $700 billion program, will not be able to do anything to help homeowners because we won't have the money. We won't be able to bail out local governments because we won't have the money. We won't be able to deal effectively with the real banking-lending crisis because we will have shot our entire wad on a bill that is guaranteed only to do one thing, and that is to help the truly wealthy on Wall Street. For better or worse, the candidacy of Barack Obama, a senator-come-lately, must be evaluated on his judgment, ideas and potential to lead. McCain, by contrast, has been chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, where he claims to have overseen every part of our economy. He didnt, thank heavens, but he does have a long and relevant economic record that begins with the Keating Five scandal of 1989 and extends to this campaign, where his fiscal policies bear the fingerprints of Phil Gramm and Carly Fiorina. Its not the résumé that a presidential candidate wants to advertise as America faces its worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. Thats why the main thrust of the McCain campaign has been to cover up his history of economic malpractice. McCain has largely pulled it off so far, under the guidance of Steve Schmidt, a Karl Rove protégé. A Rovian political strategy by definition means all slime, all the time. But the more crucial Rove game plan is to envelop the entire presidential race in a thick fog of truthiness. All campaigns, Obamas included, engage in false attacks. But McCain, Sarah Palin and their surrogates keep repeating the same lies over and over not just to smear their opponents and not just to mask their own record. Their larger aim is to construct a bogus alternative reality so relentless it can overwhelm any haphazard journalistic stabs at puncturing it. If you doubt that the big lies are sticking, look at the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll. Half of voters now believe in the daily McCain refrain that Obama will raise their taxes. In fact, Obama proposes raising taxes only on the 1.9 percent of households that make more than $250,000 a year and cutting them for nearly everyone else. You know the press is impotent at unmasking this truthiness when the hardest-hitting interrogation McCain has yet faced on television came on The View. Barbara Walters and Joy Behar called him on several falsehoods, including his endlessly repeated fantasy that Palin opposed earmarks for Alaska. Behar used the word lies to his face. The McCains are so used to deference from the filter that Cindy McCain later complained that The View picked our bones clean. In our news culture, Behar, a stand-up comic by profession, looms as the new Edward R. Murrow. Network news, with its dwindling handful of investigative reporters, has barely mentioned, let alone advanced, major new print revelations about Cindy McCains drug-addiction history (in The Washington Post) and the rampant cronyism and secrecy in Palins governance of Alaska (in last Sundays New York Times). At least the networks repeatedly fact-check the low-hanging fruit among the countless Palin lies, but John McCains past usually remains off limits. Thats strange since the indisputable historical antecedent for our current crisis is the Lincoln Savings and Loan scandal of the go-go 1980s. When Charles Keatings bank went belly up because of risky, unregulated investments, it wiped out its depositors savings and cost taxpayers more than $3 billion. More than 1,000 other S.&L. institutions capsized nationwide. It was ugly for the McCains. He had received more than $100,000 in Keating campaign contributions, and both McCains had repeatedly hopped on Keatings corporate jet. Cindy McCain and her beer-magnate father had invested nearly $360,000 in a Keating shopping center a year before her husband joined four senators in inappropriate meetings with regulators charged with S.&L. oversight...McCain was reprimanded for poor judgment...McCain has publicly thrashed himself for his mistakes back then — and boasted of the lessons he learned. He embraced campaign finance reform to rebrand himself as a maverick. But whatever lessons he learned are now forgotten. The twin-pronged strategy of truculence and propaganda that sold Bush and his war could yet work for McCain. Even now his campaign has kept the filter from learning the very basics about his fitness to serve as president — his finances and his health. The McCain multihouseholds multimillion-dollar mother lode is buried in Cindy McCains still-unreleased complete tax returns. John McCains full medical records, our sole index to the odds of an imminent Palin presidency, also remain locked away. The McCain campaign instead invited 20 chosen reporters to speed-read through 1,173 pages of medical history for a mere three hours on the Friday before Memorial Day weekend. No photocopying was permitted. Cancer incidence and mortality in Delaware was among the highest in the nation in 2002. The task: to reduce cancer incidence and mortality. Governor Ruth Ann Minner, whose own family has been affected by cancer, convened the Delaware Cancer Consortium (DCC) in SB102 to advise the governor and legislature on the causes of cancer incidence and mortality and, most importantly, taking action for reducing both. The Consortium has implemented programs and services, driven awareness and education campaigns and many other activities to lessen the cancer burden in Delaware. Delaware's rate of improvement for cancer mortality now leads the country.

There's fundraising for indicted senator Ted Stevens' 547, not actually knowing "what the VP does all day", her affiliation with the secessionist Alaska Independence Party, earmarks after earmarks for her small town projects, zero international experience, Troopergate, Babygate, Dairygate, Bridgegate, Toddgate, and now.....Churchgate. I did a drive-by of Palin's church when I was traveling through Wasilla yesterday, not realizing the furor that would be churning the blogosphere less than 24-hours later about a speech Palin delivered there only three months ago. Here's what she said regarding the war in Iraq. "Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God." Let that sink in a minute. A task that is from God. Sarah's war is a holy war. It's not, apparently from the God that says "turn the other cheek" or "I am my brother's keeper" or "the greatest of all these is love". It's not about diplomacy, international relations, figuring out why we are so despised in the Middle East, keeping Israel secure, revamping how the U.S. deals with its unsustainable dependence on foreign oil, combating poverty and desperation that leads young men to terrorism. Nope. This war is God's will. It's God's holy war. She went on: That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan. So the plan is to pray for a plan? Perhaps it would have been better to pray for a plan beFORE we went to Iraq. Better still to sit down and create a plan - a thoughtful, intelligent, human-type plan. Knowing that Palin has only been out of the country once, in 2007, to visit the Alaska Guard in Kuwait, we rightfully wonder what might influence her international policy. How will her decisions be made? What is her style of governance? Well, folks, this might just be it. Pray for a plan and hope it's the right one. Beyond that one speech she made in June, what else do we know about Palin's church? Good question. Anchroage residents, who comprise the vast majority of the population in this region of Alaska, know that Wasilla is the heart of Alaska's Valley Bible Belt. This is evidenced by the dozens and dozens of roadside churches, the Christian schools and bookstores, and how many people are wearing crosses in the local supermarket. But I, and most others I know really don't know much more than that. This is from Ed Kalnins, the senior pastor of Wasilla Assembly of God. Palin attended here for most of her adult life, until her new affiliation with a similar church in the state's capitol, Juneau: What you see in a terrorist — that's called the invisible enemy. There has always been an invisible enemy. What you see in Iraq, basically, is a manifestation of what's going on in this unseen world called the spirit world. ... We need to think like Jesus thinks. We are in a time and a season of war, and we need to think like that. We need to develop that instinct. We need to develop as believers the instinct that we are at war, and that war is contending for your faith. ... Jesus called us to die. You're worried about getting hurt? He's called us to die. Listen, you know we can't even follow him unless you are willing to give up your life. ... I believe that Jesus himself operated from that position of war mode. Everyone say "war mode." Now you say, wait a minute Ed, he's like the good shepherd, he's loving all the time and he's kind all the time. Oh yes he is — but I also believe that he had a part of his thoughts that knew that he was in a war. How will the Republican party and the pundits handle Palin's "Reverend Wright Moment"? Did McCain vet her on matters of her religious ties, knowing how devastating the impact of his church selection turned out to be for Obama? You'd think. But maybe McCain knew all along, and thought it was no big deal. Which scenario is more sobering? And how do non-Christians in the rest of the country and in Alaska feel about the "end times" philosophy of this church? Is this one more step toward the End Times of the McCain-Palin ticket?
