Complete video at: http://fora.tv/fora/showthread.php?t=515 Author Charles Frazier talks about the pressures involved in following up his first novel, "Cold Mountain" - a bestseller and National Book Award winner - with his latest book, "Thirteen Moons." ----- Charles Frazier, the best-selling author of "Cold Mountain," discusses his long awaited second novel "Thirteen Moons." Currently on best-seller lists everywhere, this story is steeped in history, rich in insight, and filled with moments of sudden beauty. Charles Frazier's "Thirteen Moons" is the story of one man's remarkable life, spanning a century of relentless change. At the age of twelve, an orphan named Will Cooper is given a horse, a key, and a map and is sent on a journey through the wilderness to the edge of the Cherokee Nation, the uncharted white space on the map. Will is a bound boy, obliged to run a remote Indian trading post. As he fulfills his lonesome duty, Will finds a father in Bear, a Cherokee chief, and is adopted by him and his people, developing relationships that ultimately forge Will's character. All the while, his love of Claire, the enigmatic and captivating charge of volatile and powerful Featherstone, will forever rule Will's heart. In a distinct voice filled with both humor and yearning, Will tells of a lifelong search for home, the hunger for fortune and adventure, the rebuilding of a trampled culture, and above all an enduring pursuit of passion. As he comes to realize, "When all else is lost and gone forever, there is yearning. One of the few welcome lessons age teaches is that only desire trumps time." Will Cooper, in the hands of Charles Frazier, becomes a classic American soul: a man devoted to a place and its people, a woman, and a way of life, all of which are forever just beyond his reach. "Thirteen Moons" takes us from the uncharted wilderness of an unspoiled continent, across the South, up and down the Mississippi, and to the urban clamor of a raw Washington City. Throughout, Will is swept along as the wild beauty of the nineteenth century gives way to the telephones, automobiles, and encroaching railways of the twentieth. Steeped in history, rich in insight, and filled with moments of sudden beauty, "Thirteen Moons" is an unforgettable work of fiction by an American master - Books Inc.

Diane received a $2500 Art & Change grant in 2006 to serve as the project director for a performance of Montazh Performing Arts Company's "Brown Girl," an interdisclipinary work presenting the struggles and triumphs of being an African American woman. The piece addresses issues of love for communities, families, significant others and self; body image; connection to ancestors and history; and skin color, all through the perspective of black women. This is a celebratory performance about, in Diane's words, "embracing our battles, acknowledging our strength, glorifying our progress, owning our future." The future of the "Brown Girl" project includes motivational speaking seminars, life counseling workshops and dance classes for youth. Crystal received a $2500 Art & Change grant in 2006 to serve as co-project director and master instructor for the "Ladies of Hip-Hop," an annual festival in Philadelphia that includes two days of women-led workshops for both novice and experienced dancers of African and modern dance, including, breaking, popping and locking. This festival brings together a community of women in hip-hop from all different backgrounds and dispels the mainstream view of women's role in hip-hop culture by highlighting positive female role models "holding their own" in a male-dominated world. In addition to sharing moves, the workshops also allow people to share their experiences, struggles, and triumphs as women in the hip-hop community. Misia, a 2006 Transformation Award receipient, uses art as a means for change and healing in her community, especially with young people of color. For the past six years, Misia has been a dance instructor in youth programs throughout Philadelphia and Maryland. Her mission is to use hip-hop and African-inspired dance as a tool for young people to be conscious of their bodies, promote self-worth, and confidence. Her work with young people includes "Emancipation Navigation," a choreopoem she created with young women in the Girls Rites of Passage program at Huey Elementary School about a Black women's sojourn into self-love, understanding her beauty and importance. Social change is an essential part of Misia's art in which dance is her voice for educating audiences and sharing stories of marginalized people and communities. She created the Nzinga Arts Collective in 2003 to create a space for artists of color to come together and create art for social justice. She has worked with many progressive female artists in Philadelphia including Montazh an all-female hip hop performance group. She has created pieces to raise consciousness and money for organizations and issues ranging from MOVE, Critical Resistance, Incite! Women of Color Against Violence, Mumia Abu Jamal, to the HUGS shelter for battered women in Philadelphia. Recently, Misia collaborated with dancer and choreographer Sheena Johnson and playwright Davina' Stewart to create "Movement from the Margins," (MFM) a multimedia dance performance in response to Hurricane Katrina and the ensuing attempts to erase Black people and Black culture. Performances of MFM included a post-show Q&A and report back about on-the-ground conditions in New Orleans, inspiring people of color to find resources within their own communities to ensure less reliance on the US government when "Katrina's" devastate communities.

Araheta Coliseum, Manila, Philippines. 1st October, 1975. The finale of the Ali and Frazier trilogy and probably the greatest fight in boxing history. Although the Thrilla In Manila fight would quickly assume the same iconic status as the Rumble In The Jungle, the announcement that Ali and Frazier had signed to meet for a third time was not met with immediate enthusiasm. Both boxers were considered well past their best. Ali traveled to Manila with a 50 strong entourage, a vast circus of trainers, corner men, gofers and hangers on. Frazier traveled lighter just 17 were in his party, but his was a more heavy presence. He appeared dark and determined, a man bent on revenge and redemption no matter what the cost. This was another Don King promotion. He had extracted a vast fee from President Ferdinand Marcos and his wife Emelda, who treated the country's money as their own. Ali received $4 million guaranteed against 43 percent of the gross takings, and Frazier was getting $3 million (Ali in fact received $6 million). The build up to the fight followed the familiar pattern. Goading Frazier with his"It will be a Killer, And a chiller, And a Thrilla, when I get the gorilla in Manila. At the pre fight press conference Ali produced a toy gorilla and began punching it. Once again Frazier was hurt by Ali's antics. "Look at my beautiful kids. How can I be a gorilla?" Frazier said. "I don't want to knock him out, I want to take his heart out." The fight began at 10:45 am to accommodate the closed circuit feed back to the US, with 28,000 Philippinos crammed into the stadium.Almost from the start, it soon become obvious that we were witnessing greatness. Ali started well, throwing right hand leads that had worked well against Foreman. Joe Frazier got caught cold and was tagged several times before he warmed up. By the third round Ali's corner were confident. In the fourth round Ali bust Frazier's mouth open, but Frazier just tossed his head back and kept on coming. The fight became intense, ferocious. In the sixth round Frazier threw a left hook that Angelo Dundee rated as the hardest shot he had seen ever thrown. It landed on ALi's jaw and spun his head round. Somehow, Ali swallowed the shot and said to Frazier, "They told me Joe Frazier was washed up.""They lied, Champ, they lied!" Frazier snarled at Ali. ANDREA ( ANDREACHEOR )
