http://www.realitycatcher.com It's about police brutality. Don't try to make it about race. Comments with ignorant racial epithets will be erased. Don't waste everyone's time and your energy. Finally!: Deputy Arrested in Wheelchair Dump Video Feb 16, 10:41 AM (ET) TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - A deputy who was videotaped dumping a paralyzed man out of his wheelchair onto a Tampa jailhouse floor turned herself in. Jail records show Charlette Marshall-Jones was booked into the Orient Road Jail early Saturday morning. It is the same jail where Marshall-Jones worked. She is accused of tipping 32-year-old Brian Sterner out of his wheelchair. A videotape of the incident has been widely circulated. The Hillsborough County deputy was charged with one count of felony abuse of a disabled person and released after posting $3,500 bail. An attorney for Marshall-Jones listed in jail records did not immediately return a phone message. http://apnews.excite.com/article/20080216/D8URG9Q80.html Honors for This Video: #28 - Most Discussed (Feb. 14, 2008) - News & Politics #39 - Most Viewed (Feb. 14, 2008) - News & Politics #58 - Top Favorites (Feb. 14, 2008) - News & Politics #83 - Top Rated (Feb. 14, 2008) - News & Politics ....... #37 - Most Discussed (Feb. 13, 2008) - News & Politics #51 - Most Viewed (Feb. 13, 2008) - News & Politics #68 - Top Favorites (Feb. 13, 2008) - News & Politics ....... #100 - Most Discussed (Feb. 12, 2008) - News & Politics #80 - Top Favorites (Feb. 12, 2008) - News & Politics Deputy suspended after dumping man from wheelchair By: Mike Deeson Tampa, Florida - The Hillsborough Co. Sheriff's Office held a press conference at 10:30am regarding the deputy who can be seen on video dumping a man in a wheelchair onto the ground. They've announced that Deputy Charlette Jones has been relieved of her duties without pay pending the outcome of an investigation. She has not officially been terminated. Jones has been employed by the Hillsborough Co. Sheriff's Office since 1996. Chief Deputy Joe Docobo watched the video for the first time last night and said he found himself in "disgust" and was "appalled at every level." Docobo also announced that two corporals and a sergeant involved are now on administrative leave with pay, and the jail supervisor on duty did not have knowledge of the incident. Brian Sterner broke his neck almost 14 years ago and is a quadriplegic. Sterner, who can drive, was arrested on a traffic violation. When he was booked into the Orient Road Jail last month, Sterner couldn't believe what happened. He says a deputy looked at him and didn't believe he was a quadriplegic. She walked behind him, took the handles on the back of the hospital-grade wheel chair and dumped it forward. Sterner says he tried to roll as he was going down, but hit so hard he thought he had broken two ribs. Then, while he was on the floor, deputies frisked him and tried to get him back into the chair. Sterner says he told them how to pick him up and put him back into the chair, but because he can't feel anything from his breastbone down, he says he was injured and didn't know it. Sterner thought he had broken two ribs, but jail x-rays showed that wasn't true. The Hillsborough Sheriff's Office didn't know anything about the incident until we showed them their own tape. Now an investigation is underway. J.D. Calloway, a spokesman for the Sheriff's Office, says this has all come to light today, so this review is very active. While we tried to get a written report about the incident, the major who runs the Orient Road Jail told us there is no incident report, because as far as they are concerned, they didn't have a problem with, or cause a problem to, an inmate in a wheelchair. But don't tell that to Brian Sterner. Sterner says it's incredibly degrading and it's an example of how poorly trained the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office is. He adds, if they're trying to figure out if somebody needs to be in a wheelchair or not, there are many other ways to do it than to dump somebody on their face. Chief Deputy Joe Docobo added at the press conference this morning, the sheriff's office will now try to "make things right for this gentleman." http://www.tampabays10.com/news/local/article.aspx?storyid=73747

Should we laugh or should we cry? South African President Thabo Mbeki fired his deputy health minister (Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge). Madlala-Routledge is best known for being the outspoken and fiercely independent deputy to South Africa's health minister, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang. She has reportedly taken a stronger line on the HIV/Aids pandemic than her minister. Mbeki dismissed her following reports that she had gone to Spain to attend an AIDS conference without his permission. She travelled to Madrid with her son and a consultant at a cost of R160 000 to the taxpayer without seeking Mbeki's approval. Madlala-Routledge's aides told a newspaper that there had been a mix up in dates and she had already arrived in Spain by the time she received word from the president she should not go. AIDS activists have been highly critical of her boss, Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, who promoted garlic and lemons as a remedy for AIDS and mistrusted antiretroviral medicines. Mbeki attracted flak some years ago for questioning the link between HIV and AIDS. Tshabalala-Msimang was ill for nine months. Alcohol ADDICTION caused her liver failure. http://www.sundaytimes.co.za/News/Article.aspx?id=537601 When Tshabalala-Msimang returned to work in June after a liver transplant, her first public gesture was to snub South Africa's national AIDS conference on the grounds that her deputy had been given a more prominent speaking role than her. After a recent newspaper expose on an Eastern Cape hospital, Madlala-Routledge visited the hospital and declared conditions a "national emergency". She found that the appalling conditions described by a local newspaper report were in fact true and that mothers and babies were dying needlessly. Mbeki, however, backed the defence of conditions offered by his health minister. Madlala-Routledge, who has been praised by civil society for her stance on the HIV/Aids pandemic, was recently elected to the central committee of the South African Communist Party (SACP). The SACP is in a tripartite alliance with the ANC and the Congress of South African Trade Unions. Reports of infighting in the alliance have proliferated ahead of the scheduled election of the ANC's president in December. South Africa's main AIDS lobby group, the "Treatment Action Campaign" (TAC) which forced the government to provide free antiretroviral treatment to sufferers, said Mbeki had made a huge mistake. "This is a dreadful error of judgement that will harm public healthcare and especially the response to the HIV epidemic," the TAC said in a statement. "It indicates that the president still remains opposed to the science of HIV and to appropriately responding to the epidemic," it said. On the other side, Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge approved the racist dismissal of white employees and contract workers at the Health Department. Furthermore she supported the dishonouring of legal & valid contracts awarded to European service providers on a racial basis. South Africa's Mbeki sacks minister who questioned AIDS policy http://www.africasia.com/services/news/newsitem.php?area=africa&item=070809114044.9g67q7t2.php S. Africa Fires Official Praised for Anti-AIDS Work http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/10/world/africa/10safrica.html Speech (audio) available here: Madlala-Routledge ponders set-up theory http://www.int.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=125&art_id=nw20070810113637605C645686 Full media conference (video): Madlala-Routledge 'nobody's handbag' http://www.int.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=125&art_id=nw20070810134859564C551369 THE MORAL OF THE STORY: If Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge were an Aids denialist she would still have her job as Deputy Health Minister. But she is not and she has paid the price. The ostensible reason for her dismissal cannot be shrugged off. We believe dirty tricks were involved in the leaking of an anonymous letter about her unauthorised trip to Spain. But that extravagant venture did show a lack of judgment on her part. Such insensitivity towards the use of taxpayers' money is bad enough. She should also have realised she was exceptionally vulnerable, given her poor relationships with President Mbeki and Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang. The trip gave them ammunition to use against her. It is no use looking for presidential consistency. Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka remains a darling despite a more scandalously wasteful outing to Dubai, while Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was sacked by her ex-husband for insubordination over an unauthorised flight to Angola. No, Madlala-Routledge was targeted specifically because she openly acknowledged some of the failures of the Health Department. In interviews last year she admitted disagreeing with the government's policies on Aids. And this year she described conditions and baby deaths at Frere Hospital as "a national emergency". For that she was slapped down by Mbeki. When Manto was on sick leave she was shown up by Madlala-Routledge. Activists and health workers were reinvigorated, believing that government had turned away from Aids denialism. Mbeki has dealt a huge blow to those hopes. Now the government's Aids policy will be under renewed scrutiny for signs of going backward. With bumbling Dr Beetroot still in charge, we all know that it's the wrong one who was fired. http://crimexposouthafrica.net/crimexp/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2433&Itemid=2

"I would prefer it withdrawn if possible so he can have his job back"... Judge F.P. Kimberly McFadden rescinded the PFA... With the order lifted, the part-time Tatamy police officer and Lehigh County deputy sheriff got his service weapons back... From the 1960's Terrytoons barn of cartoon characters, like the more familiar 'Mighty Mouse' and 'Heckle and Jeckle' shows. But I prefered Deputy Dawg, because it was so localized to the South, where I'd never been up to that point in my young life. Little did I know I'd later meet real life versions of Deputy Dawg and his nemisis, Muskie the Muskrat, his sidekicks Vincent Van Gopher and Roger Raccoon, etc. :-)
