Google Tech Talks August 5, 2008 ABSTRACT Guido D. Nez-Mujica will be presenting on Science, Innovation and entrepreneurship in developing countries, specifically in Venezuela, where he is from. He decided to stay there, instead of going abroad, to do some cheap biotechnology that is useful to people, solves unmet needs and allows us to use our knowledge for more than academic purposes. The conditions there are very different from the conditions in developed countries. In terms of politics, as well as due to logistic and legal issues, some of those differences are drawbacks, while others can be treated as advantages. He believes that open source models could thrive in underdeveloped countries such as Venezuela and create successful examples of private initiative in places where the public sector runs almost everything. The presentation is less of a detailed analysis, and more of a personal perspective and account of the experiences in his lab with a current project: A kit for Chagas disease diagnostic, plus an overview of the general situation and the opportunities it offers. Speaker: Guido D. Núñez-Mujica

Today, we spend the hour with a man who claims to have worked deep inside the forces driving corporate globalization. In his first book, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, John Perkins told the story of his work as a highly paid consultant hired to strong-arm leaders into creating policy favorable to the US government and corporations, what he calls the "corporatocracy." John Perkins says he helped the US cheat poor countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars by lending them more money than they could possibly repay and then taking over their economies. John Perkins has just come out with his second book on this issue. It's called The Secret History of the American Empire: Economic Hit Men, Jackals and the Truth about Global Corruption. John Perkins joins us now in the firehouse studio. Well, before we go further, "economic hit men"—for those who haven't heard you describe this, let alone describe yourself as this, what do you mean? JOHN PERKINS: Well, really, I think it's fair to say that since World War II, we economic hit men have managed to create the world's first truly global empire, and we've done it primarily without the military, unlike other empires in history. We've done it through economics very subtly. We work many different ways, but perhaps the most common one is that we will identify a third world country that has resources our corporations covet, such as oil, and then we arrange a huge loan to that country from the World Bank or one of its sister organizations. The money never actually goes to the country. It goes instead to US corporations, who build big infrastructure projects—power grids, industrial parks, harbors, highways—things that benefit a few very rich people but do not reach the poor at all. The poor aren't connected to the power grids. They don't have the skills to get jobs in industrial parks. But they and the whole country are left holding this huge debt, and it's such a big bet that the country can't possibly repay it. So at some point in time, we economic hit men go back to the country and say, "Look, you know, you owe us a lot of money. You can't pay your debt, so you've got to give us a pound of flesh." AMY GOODMAN: And explain your history. What made you an economic hit man? JOHN PERKINS: Well, when I graduated from business school at Boston University, I was recruited by the National Security Agency, the nation's largest and perhaps most secretive spy organization. AMY GOODMAN: People sometimes think the CIA is that, but the NSA, many times larger. JOHN PERKINS: Yeah, it is larger. It's much larger. At least it was in those days. And it's very, very secretive. We all—there's a lot of rumors. We know quite a lot about the CIA, I think, but we know very, very little about the NSA. It claims to only work in a cryptography, you know, encoding and decoding messages, but in fact we all know that they're the people who have been listening in on our telephone conversations. That's come out recently. And they're a very, very secretive organization. They put me through a series of tests, very extensive tests, lie detector tests, psychological tests, during my last year in college. And I think it's fair to say that they identified me as a good potential economic hit man. They also identified a number of weaknesses in my character that would make it relatively easy for them to hook me, to bring me in. And I think those weaknesses, I [inaudible] might call, the three big drugs of our culture: money, power and sex. Who amongst us doesn't have one of them? I had all three at the time. And then I joined the Peace Corps. I was encouraged to do that by the National Security Agency. I spent three years in Ecuador living with indigenous people in the Amazon and the Andes, people who today and at that time were beginning to fight the oil companies. In fact, the largest environmental lawsuit in the history of the world has just been brought by these people against Texaco, Chevron. And that was incredibly good training for what I was to do. And then, while I was still in the Peace Corps, I was brought in and recruited into a US private corporation called Charles T. Main, a consulting firm out of Boston of about 2,000 employees, very low-profile firm that did a tremendous amount of work of what I came to understand was the work of economic hit men, as I described it earlier, and that's the role I began to fulfill and eventually kind of rose to the top of that organization as its chief economist.

Google Tech Talks June, 13 2008 ABSTRACT In January 2007, two young engineers set off to understand how, from Norway to Brazil, from Zambia to Pakistan, entrepreneurs, inventors and civil servants are striving to address the challenges that global warming and the constrained resources of fossil fuels are presenting the 21rst century with. Blandine will be happy to present you with some of the interesting initiatives that Elodie and her collected during this trip, and discuss with you how energy, environment and development interact. Speaker: Blandine Antoine Blandine Antoine has long been keen to broaden her horizons by meeting and working with people from different backgrounds and cultures. Internships and studies in Texas, Russia, Japan, California and more recently Massachusetts have given ground to her conviction that the time she was living in was one of exchanges and unrestrained creativity for those willing to stop, listen and discuss others intuitions, needs and constraints. Her long-lasting interest in the different forms of energy prompted her to take this conviction a step further and embark, with Elodie Renaud, on the Energy World Tour, a 7-month investigation of what energy innovations look like around the world. Their goal? Meet with those who tackle energy challenges, and make their works known to a broader public Since tomorrow is already at our door, Blandne and Elodie felt that these reports would have more impact by supporting another project, targeting younger people. They thus founded Prométhée, a non-profit dedicated to promoting education on energy science and technology which developed class material to be used by primary school teachers and pupils. Blandine holds a diplôme d'ingénieur from the Ecole Polytechnique (France), a MS in Nuclear Engineering from UC Berkeley and a Master in Public Administration from the Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées (France). She has worked at the French National Safety Authority and with GE Nuclear Energy, and is the co-founder of the non-profit Prométhée. A civil servant for the French department for transportation and infrastructures, she is a PhD candidate at MIT's Engineering Systems Division, where she wishes to investigate the economic impacts of the increased used of biomass for fuel on developing economies. Blandine is a Fondation Carnot Fellow and holds a Presidential fellowship from MIT.

CHAN: The continuous hike in rice prices is affecting the world's poorest countries. Soaring fuel costs combined with food scarcity have helped trigger the crisis. Here's more on the situation. STORY: Rice is the staple food for three billion people, that's half of the world's population. On Thursday, rice prices in Thailand, the market's top exporter, surged to more than $1,000 dollars a tonne - a jump this week of 5 percent, taking prices to nearly three times their level since the start of the year. It's more bad news for rice importing countries. [Victorien Aniglo, Rice Vendor]: "We're in a country where people find it hard to part with the little money they have, and with the price rise people can't afford to eat anymore." Victorien Aniglo is a rice seller from the Ivory Coast. A kilo used to cost less than a dollar, it's now a dollar-fifty, and families are feeling the pinch. [Monique Adjoua Kouakou, Consumer]: "You buy three kilograms of rice, and there's not much left for the rest of the things you have to buy." The United Nations says soaring fuel costs combined with food scarcity helped trigger the crisis. But some analysts, like commodities expert, Dennis Gartman, say the glut of negative news stories are goading jittery governments and consumers into panic buying. [Dennis Gartman, Commodities Expert]: "They perceive a shortage that really doesn't exist." As grain prices hit new highs this week in the world's richest country the number two warehouse club operator, Sam's Club, a unit of retail giant Wal-Mart, moved to ration bulk sales of three major types of rice to prevent hoading. U.S. rice authorities say Americans have nothing to fear. [Tim Johnson, California Rice Commission]: "You shouldn't be concerned at all, there's plenty of rice in our rice mills, in our rice silo's and frankly there's plenty of rice for the stores." But the grain stores in many parts of the world are running dangerously low. For people living in West Africa, India, Brazil and many other countries, the food crisis is very real.

Ingenuity, creativity, and guts have sustained this People longer than any other identifiable group of people in existence today. The only thing that may have outdone this is their sensitivity to needs of others. Although we see and hear the leader of Iran and of the "Palestinian" Authority, this video is not about them, and of course the song doesn't refer to them. After lengthy research, the amount of material uncovered attesting to the generosity and deep feelings of love for their fellow man, is staggering - much more than could ever be stuffed into 1 video on YouTube. So here, with the help of Bob Dylan and his Neighborhood Bully, is an attempt to show what cannot even be described as the "tip of the iceberg." Now, although "Bob Dylan" never admitted to having written this song for this particular "Neighborhood Bully" - he has never refuted it. It is believed by H. Shipless that indeed Mr. Dylan ( AKA Robert Zimmerman - FYI ) - was referring to his own people - ah yes, he too is one of that "Neighborhood." Who would have thought that such a small country, bound with so many problems of its own would have time to even think about problems of others, let alone actually be permanently organized to specifically be on hand when emergency assistance is needed. Is there any other country in the world that can show such a "resume'"? The funny thing is (am not sure that is the right word) that they do not ask for anything in return - only respect as human beings - and even that, sad to say, is too much. Even the numerous countries that this "Bully" has selflessly raced to provide with humanitarian aid in times of chaotic turmoil and strife, fail to speak up in public on Her behalf. What a strange phenomenon . . . Russia, Mexico, Ecuador, Turkey, Greece, Chile, Kenya, El Salvador, Sri Lanka, and many others - all recipients of vital emergency assistance from the "Neighborhood Bully" - it must be supposed that they simply wish not to upset the well established myth, born of lies and deceit successfully creating (as was/is the purpose) in the eyes of the world, the image that is known as the "Neighborhood Bully." Just an after thought in light of what is being said lately of this "Bully." Viewers will notice immediately that Apartheid - runs quite rampant here as any anti-Semite will avow.

The G7 comprises the United States, Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Japan and their finance ministers were in the US for the meeting Mr Bush said that all the leaders recognise "that this is a serious global crisis and therefore requires a serious global response". He went on to say that the US would have to lead efforts to deal with the situation In Europe, French President Nicolas Sarkozy has called government leaders of the euro-zone for crisis talks in Paris aimed at joint action. So far, most European countries have concentrated on trying to protect their own financial institutions French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced 360 billion euros in financing ($491 billion) to shore up the country's banking system as European countries stepped up efforts to stem the global credit crisisThe French measures include 320 billion euros of loan guarantees and 40 billion euros to buy stakes in French banks in need of capital. The guarantee on loans of up to five years will be given until the end of 2009 The greatest risk is in inertia,'' Sarkozy told a press conference at the Elysee Palace in Paris ``The bank loan guarantee will represent 320 billion euros,'' he said. ``This massive commitment is up to the challenge France joined governments in Germany and Spain today in committing 960 billion euros to guarantee loans and takes stake in banks. The measures follow yesterday's announcement by European leaders of new efforts to strengthen lenders that have been battered by a freezing of credit markets and concerns about their capital levels As long as no bank fails, there is no need for the 320 billion euros,'' BNP-Paribas SA said in a e-mail today after Sarkozy's speech. ``This compares to total loans from financial institutions to the households and the corporate sector of 1,680 billion euros Finance Minister Christine Lagarde said that even with the bailout, the government was maintaining its 2008 deficit target for a shortfall of 2.7 percent of GDP The French rescue package comes after Germany announced earlier a 500 billion-euro plan, worth about 20 percent of its GDP. Prime Minister Gordon Brown's government today provided an unprecedented 37 billion-pound bailout for Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc, HBOS Plc and Lloyds TSB Group Plc The 360 billion euros in the French plan represents more than 18 percent of gross domestic product. Sarkozy said the state is setting up two companies to make the funds available. One will provide loans to banks at market rates. The second will have 40 billion euros available to offer capital to financial companies in return for equity stakes The company offering capital to the banks will raise funds in the open market and will only lend to financial companies that have ``good quality'' collateral, Lagarde said. French banks are solid and typically have Tier I capital, a key measures of solvency, of more than the minimum required 6 percent, she said We want French banks to be in a position to reach the 9 percent,'' Lagarde said She also said that no company that trade's on France's benchmark CAC 40 Index was on the ``edge of bankruptcy The French government has already shown that it will spend money to protect banks with liquidity shortages. Dedicated to all 2004 December 26th Boxing Day Tsunami Victims, families, those injured, and those otherwise affected. The terrible devastation and the aftermath of this catastrophe caught on tape. The 2004 Boxing Day tsunami was triggered by an earthquake off the north-west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It killed 230,000 people in a dozen Indian Ocean countries, 170,000 of them in Indonesia's Aceh province alone. Sri Lanka and Thailand were severely impacted by the tsunami on December 26, 2004. Tsunami Thailand 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC (07:58:53 local time) December 26, 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Surprisingly, some islands right in the middle of the tsunami were not badly affected. It turns out their atolls, or coral reefs, absorbed much of the wave. The coral ridges protected them. In many regions of the Asian waters, there is a practice some fishermen use, of dynamiting the natural coral reefs to bring up fish. These barriers to the tsunami were no longer in place to deflect the water. The disaster promoted a global outpouring of sympathy, with governments, individuals and corporations pledging more than $13 billion in aid. According to UN database, nearly two years after donors pledged billions to help the victims only half the money had been spent. Of the half a million people left homeless by the disaster, only a third have been permanently rehoused. The public response to the tsunami was very untypical. A combination of events - the dramatic nature of the huge wave, its occurrence at Christmas, the size of the disaster, the fact that so many Westerners died, the availability of spectacular video footage and the extensive TV coverage that secured - meant that the global public gave far more than ever before. The money went to aid agencies that were too small to mastermind such a mammoth task. Oxfam has spent more than $280 million on disaster recovery work and is now more than three-quarters of the way through its response plan. Aid workers have helped more than 2.3 million people across seven countries to get back into their homes.Despite the outpouring of generosity from aid agencies and individuals, recipient countries say pledges by some governments have still not been honoured. The earthquake triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, killing more than 230,000 people in eleven countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters With a magnitude of between 9.1 and 9.3, it is the second largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph. This earthquake had the longest duration of faulting ever observed, between 8.3 and 10 minutes. It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 cm (0.5 inches) and triggered other earthquakes as far away as Alaska. The disaster is known by the scientific community as the Great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake, and is also known as the Asian Tsunami and the Boxing Day Tsunami. Thailand: 5,393 confirmed dead, 3,071 missing. Many of the missing are presumed dead. Maldives: 82 dead, 26 missing. Sri Lanka, which was second hardest hit by the catastrophe, stood at 30,957, according to the Centre for National Operations. The number of people listed as missing was 5637. In India, the official death toll was 10,749 with 5640 still reported missing and feared dead. The latest disaster to hit Asia, Cyclone Nargis struck May 2008, bringing winds of up 120mph and flooding to the badly affected Irrawaddy Delta region, Burma Myanmar. The cyclone had left twice as many people vulnerable as the 2004 Asian tsunami.

"Hips Don't Lie" is a Grammy Award-nominated Latin pop song based in a salsa and Cumbia mix and fused with reggaeton beat (reggaeton pop) performed by Colombian singer Shakira and Haitian rapper Wyclef Jean. The song is a remake of Jean's 2004 song "Dance Like This" and takes some of its instrumentation from Jerry Rivera's "Amores Como El Nuestro".[1][2] Shakira wrote some parts of the new version, and co-produced the song. The song was released as the second single from Shakira's second English album Oral Fixation Vol. 2 in 2006. "Hips Don't Lie" became a global success, topping the charts in at least forty five countries. It became Shakira and Wyclef's first (and to date, only) number-one single in the U.S.. The song became one of the world's best-selling singles of all time and one of the hottest songs of summer 2006. In the UK, this was Wyclef's third number-one hit (after The Fugees' "Killing Me Softly" and "Ready Or Not") and Shakira's first. In many other countries, it became Shakira's second number one, (following the massive success of "Whenever, Wherever") and her third number one single in another countries such as Australia and Netherlands (after "Underneath Your Clothes").

Listen to Ron Paul's remarks. Get ready for the economic earth quake of a life time. Ron Paul comments on World Bank and Poverty. "Forgive and Forget" Won't Fix Third World Debt When the World Bank and International Monetary Fund spring meetings open in Washington, D.C., on April 29, 2001, officials will point proudly to the roughly $20 billion in debt that they have promised to cancel since their heavily-protested meetings last year. These promises take a step in the right direction, concludes a new report from the Worldwatch Institute, a Washington-based research organization. But even full cancellation would only be a Band-Aid for a broken system. "Before officials congratulate themselves they need to pay attention to a wider problem-how to prevent this debt crisis from happening again," said David Malin Roodman, author of Still Waiting for the Jubilee: Pragmatic Solutions for the Third World Debt Crisis. "Hundreds of billions of dollars in unpayable loans still need to be written off. And creditors have done little to change the lending practices that created the debt problem in the first place." "For example, initiatives to cut debt in Tanzania from $5.7 billion to about $1.8 billion are welcome, but unless things change, the country will probably borrow enough to lift its debt back to $6 billion by 2018. It's not enough to clean up past mistakes. We also need to learn from them. 'Forgive and forget' is a recipe for more debt troubles." Roodman calls for major reforms to prevent poorer countries from sinking back into debt. On the borrower side, these include making governments less corrupt and more accountable. On the creditor side, the reforms include:? "Unfortunately, many official lenders seem trapped in a fortress mentality, so fearful of admitting their mistakes by openly canceling failed loans that they are prolonging the debt crisis," said Roodman. "In a sort of money merry-go-round, rich governments, the IMF, the World Bank, and other official lenders are granting poor countries new loans to repay old ones. For every dollar they lend to low-income nations they get 83 cents right back in principal and interest payments. This makes bad loans look good and hides the full extent of failure." Through the enhanced Debt Initiative for Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC initiative), announced at the 1999 G-7 summit in Cologne, official creditors took a step toward ending the debt crisis in 41 of the poorest nations, offering to cancel far more debt than they had before.

But the bad news is that all my little five-minute things have run over. So anyhow, we'll adjust as we get there. But the amount of time is even. New, new, new lead question and it goes two minutes to you, Senator McCain. What is your reading of the threat from Iran right now to the security of the United States? SEN. MCCAIN: My reading of the threat from Iran is that if Iran acquires nuclear weapons, it's an existential threat to the state of Israel. And it is a threat to the region, because the other countries in the region will feel a compelling requirement to acquire nuclear weapons as well. Now, we cannot allow a second Holocaust. Let's just make that very clear. But I have proposed for a long time -- and I've had conversation with foreign leaders about -- forming a league of democracies. Let's be clear and let's have some straight talk: the Russians are preventing significant action in the United Nations Security Council. I have proposed a league of democracies, a group of people -- a group of countries that share common interests, common values, common ideals. And they also control a lot of the world's economic power. We could impose significant, meaningful, painful sanctions on the Iranians that I think could have a beneficial effect. The Iranians have a lousy government, so therefore their economy is lousy even though they have significant oil revenues. So I am convinced that together we can, with the French, with the British, with the Germans and other countries -- democracies aro
