Norbert Schultze (1911-2002 ), the composer of the 1938 song "Lili Marleen", talks about how he composed a marching song for the Third Reich, under the supervision of Goebbels, in 1941, to mark the German invasion of the Soviet Union. Later on in this monologue, filmed in 1993, (he was 82 ), Schultze goes on to recall how, at the end of the war, he composed a marching song titled "To Hell again,M.P." for the commander of the American military police in Berlin. Schultze, despite being a Party member during the war years, was a composer first and foremost, and vehemently denied that he had ever been a 'Nazi'. Albert Speer, Hitler's architect, made a similar claim after the war, but unlike Schultze, he was in a much better position to know what was going on ' behind the scenes '. He claimed he knew nothing about the Holocaust, and it's unclear whether he did or didn't, even though he was aware of deportations and the use of slave labour in concentration camps to construct munitions and other weapons of war. He was sentenced to 20 years in Spandau prison for aiding Hitler's war effort ( the Russians wanted a harsher sentence ). The court costs for Schultze's "denazification" by a West German court amounted to 3000 marks, but he never paid the money because he had never considered himself to be a 'Nazi' in the first place ! Officially, he had been classified as a "follower ", even if he wasn't a 'full-blown' Nazi, and therefore had to be " denazified ". "Mein lied " (pronounced mine leed ) means "My song ".

UPDATE: Congratulations to TheEvilGrimace for winning this contest! The next contest song will be decided by him (if he chooses in doing so) so keep your ears perked! Here are the rules: There's basically only one rule. Recreate the song using Mario Paint sounds! Modified sounds count as long as they originated from Mario Paint. Remixes and creative entries are accepted. Post your entries as a video response. Contest originally ended on July 24th, but submissions are still open. Good luck and have fun! Also, the contest soundfont is now available for download! Here's the link: v3 http://rapidshare.com/files/132031163/Rainbow_Road_v3.sf2.html v4 http://rapidshare.com/files/133485664/Rainbow_Road_v4.sf2.html If there's any problems with it just let me know. Changes to this soundfont include: v4 Hearts moved up one octave, via EvilGrimace's request. v3 Lowered Boat volume 2 db. Fixed the off-tune stars. I apologize to anyone who's entered using v2 of the soundfont! :( v2 Workaround for the C# immunity with Low A glitch. Since its only one note in this song I shortened it to that length. Fixed other minor bugs. v1 - 1 second extension + 4 second fade to Mario and Swans. -Extended the two highest notes for Mario and Swans so it would match the song's highest pitch for those instruments (assuming you'll be using them for the main lead). - Added a pitch oscillator to Mario and Swans 1 second into the held note. - Lowered Heart by one octave - Lowered volume on car to better match song. I think that's about it. Perhaps I'm making it a bit easy with this soundfont?..We'll see ^^

My first run at composing. This was done for a friend and his project for a game design class. I really wanted a SNES feel to it; nothing too advanced (despite remixing the published version with Reason to give it a better feel). It was a really fun project and I hope I can compose more game music in the future. Again, this is my first try at composing, so any critique is encouraged. Track list: 1. Title Theme 2. Windy Peaks 3. Woodlands 4. Downtown Barricade 5. Frostbite 6. Illusion 7. Ending / Credits Download mp3 / midi here: http://ozzie.sebastianwolff.info My deepest thanks to Claude Debussy who helped me compose Frostbite. I'm really not a fan of his work, but his piece "The Snow is Dancing" (No. 4 from Children's Corner) helped set the desolate and completely surreal feel of it. If you're wondering if you've heard Downtown Barricade before... I used a lot of inspiration from the soundtrack from Professor Layton and the Curious Village. I couldn't for the life of me track down the composer, so, if you composed the music for this game and are reading this, let me know :D EDIT: Tomohito Nishiura is the amazing composer for Professor Layton (and other games)! Regarding all other songs, I got most of my inspiration from Yoko Shimomura, Nobuo Uematsu, Koji Kondo, and from Pixel's game Cave Story. I am still trying to find my own style, with regards to composing and playing, but thanks to these awesome people who inspire me, I can hopefully revise my techniques and become better. Everything © Sebastian Wolff. Feel free to use my work, but give credit where credit is due, and let me know about if and when you use it. Enjoy, Sebastian http://sebastianwolff.info

http://www.egs.edu/ Heiner Goebbels, German composer and music director talking about composing for directors, theatres, operas, theatre plays, performances; discussing his life, stories, work, professional and artistic experiences as well as the concepts of sound, noise, acoustic space, Berthold Brecht, separation of elements, change of formats, Elias Canetti, Eraritjaritjaka. Public open lecture with students of the European Graduate School EGS, Media and Communication Studies department program, Saas-Fee, Switzerland, Europe, 2007. Heiner Goebbels. Heiner Goebbels, born August 17 1952, studied Sociology and Music in Frankfurt/Main, is a composer notable for his mixture of styles, drawing from sources as varied as classical music, jazz, and rock music. He started playing Eislerian music in a duo with saxophonist Alfred Harth and composing music for theatre, film, and ballet, and has continued to do so, although he has since then broadened his repertoire to concerts and his oeuvre has recently come to include the opera Landschaft mit entfernten Verwandten (Landscape with Distant Relatives, 2002). Goebbels co-founded the avant-garde rock group Cassiber (1982--1992) with Harth, Chris Cutler and Christoph Anders. They toured extensively across Europe, Asia and North America, and made five albums. Much of his better known work, however, originated from his close collaboration with the East German writer Heiner Müller, resulting in stage compositions as well as shorter pieces (concerts as well as audio plays) loosely based on Müller texts, such as Verkommenes Ufer (Waste Shore, 1984), Die Befreiung des Prometheus (The Liberation of Prometheus, 1985), or Wolokolamsker Chaussee (Volokolamsk Highway, 1989). Goebbels' attempts to fill the space between theatre and opera left blank due to traditional genre borderline drawing has led to projects such as Schwarz auf Weiss (Black on White, 1996) or Die Wiederholung (The Repetition, 1997). The political nature of his work is often referred to by critics. His interest in Heiner Müller can partly be explained by the political character of Müller's texts, as may be the case with his interest in Bertolt Brecht and Hanns Eisler, works by the latter he used in composing his staged concert Eislermaterial (1998). Goebbels' work is being increasingly acknowledged as he is being played and staged around the world and as his recordings are being published. His Surrogate Cities, a work for big orchestra dating from 1994 and featuring texts from Paul Auster, Heiner Müller, and Hugo Hamilton, was nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Classical Contemporary Composition at the 43rd Grammy Awards in 2001. His Eislermaterial won him another Grammy nomination at the 46th Grammy Awards in 2004, this time in the category Best Small Ensemble Performance (with or without conductor). In recent years Heiner Goebbels enjoyed the privilege of several guest professorships and nominations for composer-in-residence.

... Imagine, you are composing a nice meditative & transcendental New Age song, and while listening to the accord scheme and watching your garden while it's enlightened by the morning Sun and all those nice Spring smells of trees & plants, you close your eyes, and suddenly you see ... That your garden is filled with ... Hortensias ... ;-) Actually this happened while I was composing this song, and so I all those images gave me the title :D

Once he had advanced a little along the Sufi way he became more and more interested in composing poetry, and one of the first things he penned was a qasidah (quatrain) in praise of his spiritual guide. Initially he preferred to write sīharfīs and duhras, but then he advanced to composing stories in verse. His poetry is essentially written in the Pothohari dialect of Panjabi, and utilizes a rich vocabulary of Persian and Arabic words. His works include: Sīharfī, Sohnī Mahīvāl, Tuhfah-e Mīrān, Tuhfah-e Rasūliyah, Shīrīn Farhād, Mirzā Sāhibān, Sakhī Khavāss Khān, Shāh Mansūr, Gulzār-e Faqīr, Hidāyatul Muslimīn,Panj Ganj, Masnavī-e Nīrang-e 'Ishq. He also wrote a commentary on the Arabic Qasīdat-ul-Burda of al-Busiri and his most famous work, entitled Safarul 'Ishq (The Journey of Ardent Love), but better known as Sayful Mulūk.

Ludovico Einaudi (born 23 November 1955 in Turin, Italy) is an Italian contemporary classical music composer and pianist. His phenomenal CD sales and ability to sell out major concert halls worldwide are confirmation that Einaudi is one of classical music's success stories of recent years. After studying at the Conservatory in Milan, and subsequently with Berio, he spent several years composing in traditional forms. In the mid-1980s he began to search for a more personal expression in a series of works for dance and multimedia, and later for piano. His music is ambient, meditative and often introspective, drawing on minimalism, world music, and contemporary pop. He has made a significant impact in the film world, with four international awards to his name.
