From Virginia Broitman and Sherri Lippman's The How of Bow Wow, this clear overview of clicker training gives you the basics in just one minute! From the ClickFlicks Learning Center. http://www.clickertraining.tv "Clicker training" is the popular term for the training or teaching method based on what we know about how living organisms learn. Research has shown that any creature—whether a dog, cat, dolphin, parrot, fish, horse, llama, or person—is more likely to learn and repeat actions that result in consequences it desires and enjoys. So clicker trainers provide consequences desired by their animal in exchange for actions or behaviors desired by their trainers. We call these consequences "rewards" and the process is called "reinforcement." Clicker training, therefore, is a positive-reinforcement-based system of training. First widely used by dolphin trainers who needed a way to teach behavior without using physical force, operant conditioning (the scientific term for clicker training) can be and has been successfully employed with animals of all sizes and species, both domesticated and wild, young and old; all breeds of dogs and puppies, cats, birds, leopards, rats, rabbits, chinchillas, fish, and more. Clicker trainers who learn the underlying principles have at their disposal a powerful set of tools that enable them to analyze behaviors, modify existing methods for individual animals, and create new methods where none previously existed. This flexibility allows the tools of clicker training to be re-invented in new forms that work in a range of situations, and for an infinite variety of animals. The same principles have also been applied to training for athletes, dancers, skaters, and other people. Called "TAGteach," this form of training uses a click as a marker signal to teach precise physical motions quickly, accurately, and positively. We remain responsible forever of what we have tame. dont forget it!! dont buy bird, ADOPT! Kiwi has mastered how to put all the rings on the peg. Kiwi est passe maitre dans l'art d'empiler ses anneaux sur la pole. *** Basicly there is several steps the bird should master to get to there. 1- Make her touch/take the ring 2- drop the ring in my hand (I put my hand under) 3- put the ring in my hand 4- fetch the ring to put it in my hand 5- fetch any object to put in my hand 6- bring the ring while aiming or touching the peg that I hold in my hand (I try to aim the peg in the ring) 7- bird try to put the ring on the pole (understand where it goes) 8- bird succeed to put the ring on the peg 9- bird put all the rings on the peg Do small sceance of training (~10 min) once a day (each step took me around 2-3 days to learn) Bird have excellent memory, you dont need to practice everyday, he will remembber each step learned very well. Do positive training, help the bird to have as many "successes" as possible. ,Reward each little increment along the way. It's much better to guide him to the right response than to have to correct the bird for a wrong one. If the bird does not do something right, try it again another way so that the bird can be rewarded for the correct moves. Never be negative (say NO) if the bird get stressed or distracted. Training teaches a bird discipline, and as you spend more time observing your bird and its reactions, you will understand it better, and the bird will at the same time also learn better how to respond to you and what pleases you.

We did a few different things in this pony's clicker training session (he's only had a few previous sessions): targeting the piano and making it play; picking up the handle ball and looking for him to hold it; knocking over cones. He was confused on the last one because of the previous exercise; he thought he should also pick up the cones as he did with the ball. It's OK; in the beginning, we take what we can get and build on it. http://clickryder.com

Watch this amazing clip and see how clicker training works for even the most stubborn of animals. In this example a mule that had been abused and then rescued is afraid of entering a specific stall. The trainer uses clicker training with the mule and the animal is eventually able to overcome the fears. Telepathy versus clicker training Supervisor: Arild Karlsen Place: Akershus university college, Norway. The video shows three situations. Situation. 1: The class is instructed to think about the letter N. The student in the hallway enters the room and tries to find the symbol the whole class in thinking about on the board. The student points out the incorrect symbol. Situation 2: The class is instructed to think about another symbol. The student in the hallway enters the room and tries to find the symbol. A predetermined number of click sounds are produced while the student tries to find the symbol. Again the wrong symbol is chosen. She thought she pointed at the correct symbol when the clicking stopped. She was fooled by her own covert verbal behaviour ("thinking"). We gained knowledge about her "thinking" only after she told us about it. Situation. 3: The class is instructed to think about a third symbol. When the student in the hallway enters the room her thinking is taken control over by telling her that the click has a meaning. Clicks will only occur when she is getting closer to the symbol. She than eventually finds the correct symbol. Conclusion: Telepathy is an ineffective method compared to selection by consequences. However, the functions of the clicks are different from the reinforcing stimuli you have seen in the teaching of Richard Norton's cats. For further interpretations of complex interactions between "speakers" and "listeners" you should study B. F. Skinner's book "Verbal behavior" from 1957.

My first video blog. Basically there needs to be a new term for 'the clicker training method' as people are getting the wrong idea about what 'Clicker Training' really is. Some people are under the impression that by just using a clicker, you are in fact 'clicker training'. I believe that 'clicker training' is a precise method that is being used 100% of the time, NOT just when the dog does something correct... listen and find out what I believe 'clicker training' is all about... ;)

This lovebird is in the process of being trained to target to a laser pointer. This video shows three sessions from the second day of training. As I've had several questions, one source for clickers is Karen Pryor's site http://www.clickertraining.com . The site also has nice training videos so that you can learn how to use the clickers. The clickers themselves are not the key, you still need to use them with good animal training techinique, timing, and consistency.
