Bunraku is Japan's professional puppet theater. Developed primarily in the 17th and 18th centuries, it is one of the four forms of Japanese classical theater, the others being kabuki, noh, and kyogen. The term bunraku comes from Bunraku-za, the name of the only commercial bunraku theater to survive into the modern era. Bunraku is also called ningyo joruri, a name that points to its origins and essence. Ningyo means "doll" or "puppet," and joruri is the name of a style of dramatic narrative chanting accompanied by the three-stringed shamisen. This exhibition from a show in Kyoto...

Bunraku Japanese puppet theatre Bunraku Bunraku, or Japanese puppet theater, is probably the most developed form of puppetry in the world. It is closer in style to Punch and Judy than Pinnochio as there are no strings and in its early days the puppeteers were hidden behind a curtain. The puppets are large - usually about one-half life size - and the main characters are operated by three puppeteers. Many bunraku plays are historical and deal with the common Japanese theme of giri and ninjo - the conflict between social obligations and human emotions. The greatest works by Japan's most famous playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon (1653~1724) are bunraku plays, many of which are written around this kind of conflict. Oh, Fantastic Bunraku! The prototype was made as for this program in 1991 and represents the life of Jesus Christ. Though I'm not Christian, I was very impressed by this "Gospel in Bunraku" when I heard it at the first time in Tokyo. ------------------------------------ This is new version. It was amended end title. #with Japanese caption http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=I7vtV-7z4eY ------------------------------------ "Gospel in Bunraku" 1.The Life of Jesus 2.The Lord's Supper 3.Jesus' Crucifixion 4.The Resurrection of Jesus December 3th, 2004. in Catholic Kobe Central Church ------------------------------------ Bunraku is the traditional puppet theater of Japan, an outstanding stage art of which Japan can be very proud. Bunraku's world renown stems not only from its high-quality artistic technique, but also from the high level of its "joruri music" and the unique nature of manipulating the puppets -- each puppet requires three puppeteers to bring it to life. ------------------------------------ According to HANAFUSADAYU, this program was performed with Ningyo (puppet) at 13 times and without ningyo named sujoruri at 67 times in the past as of July 2008. The scene of "The Resurrection of Jesus" had not been sometimes performed. But, this time, the DVD was released including all scenes fortunately. Now, I uploaded short version in 10 minutes after having received a permission of HANAFUSADAYU and other staffs/casts concerned. Here is a video of a bunraku performance. It is a scene from Date Musume Koi no Hikanoko, in which Oshichi, the greengrocer's daughter, climbs a fire tower on a snowy night to sound a false alarm in order to save her lover. I saw this when I was in Gion district in Kyoto, Japan on a study abroad trip. (Graduate course in International Studies: Peace Studies)
