Billy Bennett usually carried the billing 'Almost A Gentleman' - dressed in disreputable tails and an improbable moustache he created a world all his own. He brought a spirit of daring and rebellion to English music hall and variety stages in the 1920s and '30s. Enjoy this brief piece of vintage film.

H. Vernon Watson was a well-known British music hall artist before World War I doing impressions of the leading comedians of the day. In the 1920s after the American black-faced comedian Frank Tinney had toured Britain to great acclaim, Watson added him to his range of impressions. Gaining good audience appreciation for this black-faced routine Watson added his own original character under the name of Nosmo King. The inspiration for the name, so the story goes, was that he saw a notice on partly opened back stage doors with the two halves reading "No Smo" and "king". He was later joined by his son Jack and the pair toured as Nosmo King and Hubert. Father and son continued together until Jack joined the forces during the Second World War. At this point Vernon Watson again reverted to a solo act. He died in 1949. Jack Watson - Hubert in Nosmo's act - went on to have a notable career as an actor. The older generation besides recalling him as part of the music-hall double act will also remember him as a radio comic and monologuist on such shows as Navy Mixture and Take It From Here. Coronation Street viewers will remember him as the man who finally won Elsie Tanner for keeps, and on the screen he was notable for playing tough and gruff men of action in such films as The Wild Geese and The Sea Wolves. Modern apprarances saw him on TV in Edge of Darkness, Dempsey & Makepeace, Minder, Casualty and Heartbeat. IN POSTING THIS VIDEO NO OFFENCE IS INTENDED.

Earl's Court, London: 20 February 2008. What a night for fans of British music. Dozens of top artists filed past on the red carpet outside Earls Court on yet another freezing day. Quite a challenge for fans too. There were few good shooting positions and plenty of competition for them. Some of my regular fan-mates couldn't run fast enough to get a good spot when the gates opened. It was bedlam. One girl fell in front of me and it seemed unseemly to step over her and my prime place was gone. Fortunately security made sure unaccredited media were chucked out, leaving me with an OK spot on the barricade. Things have a habit of working themselves out. Lots of kids and their parents in the crowd that all added to the atmosphere -- it's half term btw. Plenty screaming from them, it seems they love all the stars and aren't self conscious about saying it loud. Listen to the sound if you need confirmation. Seemed odd to hear primary school kids discussing rehab, and not the song! Plenty of opportunity for the autograph folk, though many of the biggest names snuck in around the back to avoid the hubbub. Sam Barton (1894-1941)was a naturalized US Citizen, arriving in the US as a young child from Russia, and growing up in New York City. He went on the stage as a young man, about 15 or 16 years of age, developing his performance, worked with the William Morris Agency, and soon travelled the world performing. He was very popular in the British music halls with his speciality bicycle act. His wonderful routine always saw him dressed as a clown performing with his collapsing bicycle. He also toured successfully throughout Europe, perfoming in many of the leading music halls, as the star attraction, with headline listings, as well as command performances. Sam's collapsing bicycle act was not unique though, having been originated by the Austrian born Joe Jackson. Enjoy this vintage film footage...

Ella Shields.(b., Baltimore, MD, 1879-1952). Miss Shields' extraordinary performing career spans over 50 years from her debut in 1898, the Victorian era, thru WWI & WWII. Ella was hailed on many a continent for her talents and was a "star attraction" in both vaudeville and British Music Hall. Miss Shields opened the London Palladium in 1910 and featured in America on the Keith-Albee circuit in vaudeville theatres in her native country, including in her hometown of Baltimore, Maryland in 1947 at the recently refurbished 1914 historic Hippodrome. Her signature song, Burlington Bertie from Bow, (1915) is still being sung today. Miss Shields is the likely role model for "Victor" in Victor/Victoria since Julie Andrews adored Miss Shields and both appeared on the same bill for a Royal Command Performance in 1948 with Danny Kaye topping the bill. Ella enjoyed a spectacular success late in her career in Thanks for the Memory ( a three year smash hit) with other British Music Hall legends and was honored as the "First Great Grandmother of British Music Hall". Ella Shields: The Woman Behind the Man has been performed at such venues as the Victorian Festival in Cape May, NJ, Queen Mary 2, International Museum Theatre Conference in London, Senior Theatre League of America Conference in Las Vegas, NV, Johns Hopkins University, Walters Art Museum, Washington College, Goucher College, Enoch Pratt Free Library, Creative Alliance and other venues including Baltimore Living History Theatre Series at the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion in 2007. (see 2006-2007 Programs). Note: Harriet Lynn in summer 2006 was one of nine other women invited from across the country to learn the "Chautauqua way" bringing her "Ella Shields" show to participate as a member of the inaugural training class of the Woman Chautauqua Institute (WCI) at Cottey College, a two-year, liberal arts, women's college, in Nevada, Missouri. WCI received support from the Missouri Humanities Council and National Endowment for the the Humanities for this program.

Maximo Park have taken the world by storm and proven themselves as one of the last truly original acts to make it through the closing door of the new wave of young British rock acts. Their debut full-length A Certain Trigger launched a wave of frenzy in the UK that began with and endless string of sold-out shows and emphatic praise from rock bible NME and has recently ascended even further with record sales landing the band a Gold Record for the album, appearances on the legendary Top Of The Pops television program and a headlining spot on this year's NME Awards Tour alongside upstarts Artic Monkeys. This puts Maximo Park in good company with past NME Tour headliners Franz Ferdinand, The Killers and Kaiser Chiefs. In addition to their superstar status in the UK, Maximo Park have made a great impression on US shores having seen praise from MTV and Rolling Stone as well as Andy Warhol's Interview and a tour with modern-rock darlings The Bravery.
