Many people remember the faces that dominated Japan after the fall of the Shogunate in 1868. But few take the time to remember the men who came before, and who lived to see the new era. This video is a tribute to those men-- the supporters and family members of the Tokugawa clan, who for better or for worse, lost the brutal Boshin Civil War in 1868-69, and who lived to see what happened to Japan, and in many cases, to serve it admirably to the end of their lives. The music is the end theme from the film U-571, which I do not own. I consider this video not only a tribute to the aforementioned men, but also to the composer of the U-571 soundtrack, Richard Clayderman, for writing music that so adeptly captured my thoughts on these men.

For many people warrior women seem to exist only in the world of exaggerated fiction, myth or summer movies. However, in many ancient cultures, they were real historic figures. The Last Samurai Woman is a very brief introduction to a real human being who was an accomplished warrior and leader. Abandon all thoughts of women suddenly taking up arms to face a dire situation. Nakano Takeko and her female comrades (they are later known as the Joshigun/Joushitai) of Aizu had studied martial arts SERIOUSLY PRIOR to the time their homeland was invaded in 1868 by Imperial troops during the Boshin War. "Aizu's women warriors...received in-depth combat driling, particularly in the use of the halberd. Educated to be equally skilled in the 'ways of the pen and sword', they were also indoctrinated with the belief that their duty was first to protect their domain and lord, and then their families" (Wright 402) Furthermore, this extraordinary group of women saw themselves as retainers to Teruhime (Princess Matsudaira Teru of Aizu) who was the adoptive sister of the domain's daimyo (lord) Matsudaira Katamori. You may learn more about her here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matsudaira_Teru These women were raised under strict patriarchal Confucian ideals therefore it would be a mistake to view them as feminists (although I'm sure they would appreciate some accomplishments made by modern feminists), when their first priority was to defend their home. I would like to add that some of the warrior women who did survive the entered the field of women's education during the Meiji Era. Aizu was certainly not the only domain which trained women in the samurai social class to fight. Satsuma women fought alongside their male kin the Seinan War (Satsuma Rebellion) in 1876-1877. In the case of the Seinan War, the Satsuma domain had an offensive stance when it marched on Tokyo (after initially shifting its aim from Kyoto in search of the emperor) under the leadership of Saigo Takamori. That war was fictionalized and shown in the Tom Cruise film THE LAST SAMURAI (which interestingly failed to portray Satsuma samurai women)! Thus, like male samurai, their female counterparts take offensive and defensive actions based on the policy of their respective homes (domains). Please try to find this excellent article to learn the full story: Wright, Diana E. "Female Combatants and Japan's Meiji Restoration: the case of Aizu" War in History 2001 v. 8 (4) pages 396-417 or visit http://www.shinsengumihq.com/WB.htm (no spaces) A related video is: Byakkotai Tribute http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1IIo4o3beo I apologize for not creating a slide to mention the music credits so I'd like to mention here: The Last Samurai [ENHANCED] [SOUNDTRACK] Hans Zimmer (which can be purchased online) The biography will be completed by the scholar mentioned in the short video. Technical notes: I only had 4 hours to spend on this project so it is not as good as I'd like it to be. I used windows movie maker and adobe photoshop.

BYAKKOTAI.NET When people say "Byakkotai" they are usually referring to the small group of teenagers who took their own lives on Mt. Iimori in AIZU. However, not all Byakkotai committed suicide or died. Around this very time of March or April in 1868 (the Boshin War), a fighting force comprising of hundreds of very young samurai of Aizu was already formed in preparation of the invasion by the kangun or Imperial Troops. The 16-17 year old young men were intended to be a "reserve force" (Shiba 45). However, it seems to have been the case that 15 year olds did enter the force through deception. The story of the Byakkotai has been narrated in many ways such as pop-culture, movies, novels, even crossover manga with the Shinsengumi. The lack of a detailed historical narrative of the Byakkotai points to there symbolic significance. They became more than just boys who misread a situation and made extreme decisions. The End of Aizu's Future The value of male children in Japanese (Pan-asian) culture is well known. Children really were raised by the community. Extended family members, close friends, and the many teachers at the domain school (Nisshinkan) were all authority figures who were allowed to shape and discipline these young men. The Byakkotai were part of the very last generation to complete or experience a traditional samurai education. They were not just sons of certain families but sons of the entire domain. Their deaths stood for the end of the domain's future as a feudal entity. They stood at the border of childhood and samuraihood (indeed many of them were considered to be full adults already) and their potential as individuals remain unfulfilled. You may learn more about the Byakkotai here http://www.shinsengumihq.com/byakkotaiinfo.htm The music is from Hans Zimmer OST "LAST SAMURAI" Special Thanks to "Hirotada Tokugawa" for providing his voice and writing talent to this project. Nakajima Nobori is a member of the Shinsengumi who has *not been featured in any manga or anime such as Peacemaker Kurogane, Gintama etc which is very ironic because he was a painter! (^_^) Although not always accurate, Nakajima has provided valuable historical information on the Shinsengumi and captured various miburo artistically. You can learn more about him at http://www.shinsengumihq.com/Nakajimabio.htm http://www.shinsengumihq.com/NakajimaStudio.htm Music for this video is from the Mibugishiden soundtrack by Jo Hisaishi a shamisen wav file from http://library.thinkquest.org/28110/instruments/japanese/index.html and The Best of Kodo by Kodo

These Photographs were taken in the final days of the samurai class, before its abolition in 1867. It should be noted that some of these photographs date to the Meiji period. Many of these pictures were taken in the 1880's -therefore they show former samurai, or sometimes just ordinary people posing as samurai. NOTE: The last few pictures seen in this video show Tokugawa Yoshinobu, Japan's last Shogun and the famous reformer, Sakamoto Ryoma, who played a pivotal role in the modernisation of the country. We also see the new Police force(The seated uniformed man with the katana) as well as the last picture which displays the European military reformers and the westernized Japanese officers. Although these aren't samurai, they were added to show the revolutionary changes that were taking place in Japanese society at this time. Several of these Photographs were taken by the renowned photographer Felice Beato and his pupil, Raimund von Stillfried.

The Last Samurai is a 2003 drama film/war film directed and co-produced by Edward Zwick, who also co-wrote the screenplay based on a story by John Logan. The film stars Tom Cruise (who also co-produced) in the role of American soldier Nathan Algren whose personal and emotional conflicts bring him into contact with samurai in the wake of the Meiji Restoration in the Empire of Japan in 1876 and 1877. Other actors include Ken Watanabe, Timothy Spall, Billy Connoly and Tony Goldwyn. The film's plot is based on the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion led by Saigō Takamori, and also on the story of Jules Brunet, a French army captain who fought alongside Enomoto Takeaki in the Boshin War. The historical roles in Japanese westernization by the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and France are largely attributed to the United States in the film, and characters in the film and the real story are simplified for plot purposes. It is not an accurate source of historical information.
