Bisphenol A is not dangerous, despite what some people try to trick you into believing. The media is wild about the evils of this product, but the results of a recent Health Canada investigation have shown that even amongst infants, the levels of Bisphenol A one can consume are far below anything that can be considered dangerous. http://adamrulz.com/beef/2008-04.html

Decide for yourself. Bis-Phenol A is an additive in clear, hard, plastics. It is used in water bottles, baby bottles, soda can liners, etc. and is known to leach into the foods and liquids which are stored in it. It is in recycling category 7 (on the bottom of the bottle, in the triangle). Independent academic studies suggest it presents a variety of risks to humans. The government, relying on industry studies, claims the facts are unclear. By Bill Moyers and Expose. BPA is Found in Most Hard Plastics, Including 95 Percent of Baby Bottles The National Institute of Health will imminently release a federal report on Bisphenol-A, or BPA, a chemical that causes cancer, obesity and neurological disorders in animals. BPA leaches into food and drinks from most hard plastics, including 95 percent of baby bottles. Because babies and children are developing at such a rapid rate, even extremely low doses of BPA pose a threat. In response to the growing scientific consensus about the dangers of BPA, safe alternatives and state legislation to ban the chemical have emerged nationwide. Nine states (California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York and Pennsylvania) are currently considering bills related to BPA's dangers to children. Parents across the country are demanding safe solutions, making BornFree, a manufacturer of BPA-free bottles, the fastest-growing baby bottle company in the US. Dr. Maida Galvez of Mount Sinai's Children's Environmental Health Center discusses the use of plasticizers, such as phthalates and bisphenol A, in baby bottles, sippy cups, water bottles, toys and baby products. She gives advise on how parents can protect their children and themselves. Phthalates are found in many common consumer products such as food packaging, vinyl flooring and wall covering, medical supplies such as intravenous tubing, and personal care products including fragrances, cosmetics and nail polish. Bisphenol A is found in the lining of canned foods and polycarbonate plastics as is found in water bottles, water dispensers and baby bottles. What can you parents do to minimize a child's exposure to plastics? To minimize exposure to phthalates and bisphenol A parents can: 1. Look for children's products that are marked free of phthalates and/or bisphenol A 2. Avoid placing plastics in the dishwasher and the microwave since high temperatures may promote leaching of the plasticizers 3. Look to recycling labels in the absence of mandatory labeling #3 plastics may contain lead and phthalates #7 plastics may contain bisphenol A Instead, choose plastics that are labeled #1, 2, 4, and 5 4. Select fresh foods rather than canned food products 5. Choose stainless steel water bottles rather than plastic 6. Use glass containers for food storage 7. Wet mop and dust frequently to minimize exposure to phthalates in dust

On 23rd May 2008 Reported There may be a potentially dangerous chemical leaching into our food from the containers that we use every day. BILL MOYERS JOURNAL and EXPOSÉ: AMERICA'S INVESTIGATIVE REPORTS examine why, even though studies show that the chemical Bisphenol A can cause cancer and other health problems in lab animals, the manufacturers, their lobbyists, and U.S. regulators say it's safe. In a watchdog series for the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, a trio of reporters focused on Bisphenol A, a chemical contained in many plastics that is also found in 93% of human beings. The problem at issue? Congress ordered the federal government in 1996 to begin testing and regulating certain chemicals suspected of causing cancer and a host of developmental problems. Eleven years later, not a single compound has been put to that test. You can read the full series "Chemical Fallout" online, plus ongoing coverage of the fate of Bisphenol A. On May 15, 2008, the SENTINEL reported on some new Congressional hearings: Members of a Senate consumer affairs subcommittee faulted federal agencies for reacting too slowly to concerns that children are exposed to bisphenol A through leaching from common items such as water bottles, baby bottles and the linings of food and baby-formula cans. Estrogenic chemicals in plastics. What you need to know, from Cornell University What you can do: Learn the names of environmental estrogens Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental estrogen found in polycarbonate plastics (recycle symbol 7). It is also used in the epoxy lining of metal cans (food cans). Minimize leaching from polycarbonate sports or baby bottles -Wear and tear, harsh detergents, or heat can cause bisphenol A to leach out. -Hand-wash bottles in mild detergent. -Don't leave bottles where they can heat up (hot car, hot sand, etc.). -Don't use bottles that are worn or scratched; recycle or reuse. -Microwave food or beverages in glass or lead-free ceramic containers. Make alternative choices -Consider using food-grade stainless steel water bottles or glass baby bottles. -Minimize use of canned foods; eat more fresh produce or dried products instead. Phthalates, Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers ( PBDEs ), Bisphenol A Plastics are all over us, in our bodies and poison our environment. Amphibians and fish already exhibit the effects of this polution - sexual organs producing male and female eggs, sexual dysfunction. All of this due to the hormone estrogen that is produced in excess due to exposure to those chemicals.
