http://www.ted.com In this bracingly honest and funny talk, international security strategist Thomas P.M. Barnett outlines a post-Cold War solution for the foundering US military: Break it in two. He suggests the military re-form into two groups: a Leviathan force, a small group of young and fierce soldiers capable of swift and immediate victories; and an internationally supported network of System Administrators, an older, wiser, more diverse organization that actually has the diplomacy and power it takes to build and maintain peace.

-Why didn't Fedor just sign with the UFC? - Fedor interview "I never met Dana White, never spoke to him on the phone, never exchanged e-mails,"."However, I did read a lot on the Internet about what he said in regard to me and Vadim. I also read e-mails that he sent to Vadim; all of his correspondence was very upsetting. The contract that we were presented with by the UFC was simply impossible, couldn't be signed, I couldn't leave. If I won, I had to fight eight times in two years. If I lost one fight, then the UFC had the right to rip up the contract. At the conclusion of the contract, if I am undefeated, then it automatically extends for an as yet unspecified period of time, though for the same compensation. "Basically I can't leave undefeated. I can't give interviews, appear in films or advertising. I don't have the right to do anything without the UFC's agreement. I could do nothing without the OK from the UFC. I didn't have the right to compete in combat sambo competition. It's my national sport. It's the Russian sport, which in his time our president competed in, and I no longer have the right to do so. There were many such clauses; the contract was 18 pages in length. It was written in such a way that I had absolutely no rights while the UFC could at any moment, if something didn't suit them, tear up the agreement. We worked with lawyers who told us that it was patently impossible to sign such a document." -May 2008.Fedor finished his study as a student of chair of physical training at Belgorod State University. It's understandable that Fedor's schedule wouldn't let him graduate as quickly as other students normally do. The topic of his thesis was "Methodology of physical skills' development training 13-15 year old sambo practitioners". -Fedor was 12 when he started training grappling under Vladimir Voronov, who remains his trainer to this day. For 20 years Voronov has been as much a part of Fedor's life off the mat as on it. Fedor (teenager) aspired to join the Russian national team. He didn't partake in life's pleasures but instead spent all of his time studying and training. Two factors were constant in his life then: a lack of money and the presence of his family and team. Frequently there wasn't enough money for food. Fedor and his brother Aleksander were constantly growing and training, and their mouths were not the smallest to feed. The food Olga Emelianenko grew in her makeshift garden was often not enough, and come winter a garden was impossible. "My mother not only loves me as a son," Fedor has proudly said, "but respects me as a person." Voronov pitched in, dropping off bags of grain or potatoes. The harder life became, the closer Fedor and his family and his team grew. The more they depended on each other's existence, the less money mattered. -Following his return from the army, Fedor once again fell into serious training with the Russian national sambo and judo teams, but there was not enough to eat, no money for uniforms or shoes. -He had married his childhood sweetheart, Oksana, near the mats and in front of Voronov and his team at the Vladimir Nevsky Club, the gym where he had trained since he was 11. The trainer helped the young couple renovate their small temporary flat while they waited impatiently for the arrival of their daughter, Mashenka, and their first studio apartment that the city would give them. "In the army I was never disrespectful, never cocky, though I could always stand up for myself,". "And I always tried to help those younger than me. I did have to fight a lot but only at the very start." The problems with compensation for athletes worsened.During this time Fedor was accepted onto both the Russian national sambo and judo teams. Though he was representing his country, he had no income. The fighters were thankful for any opportunity to work and feed their families. With no future or prospects of doing what he loved doing, Fedor tentatively turned to MMA as a way out. After much trepidation he floated the idea of fighting in the sport with his trainer. Voronov was not against it, thinking that Fedor would be able to handle himself in MMA. Leaving the Russian judo and sambo teams for the totally unknown, with no certain future, was an immensely hard decision. But with the blessings of his wife and trainer, Fedor stepped into the ring. -Not surprisingly Fedor is known very well in Stary Oskol. Every taxi driver, shopkeeper and hotel receptionist has a story about him. All praise his humility, with some saying he is the most humble person they know and praising the way he has remained one of them despite his success. A particularly amusing story involves Fedor winning a fight in Japan and then returning home. He landed at the town airport, then had to call a friend to pick him up because he had forgotten to arrange a ride home. He drives a Toyota that the city gave him for his achievements, lives in an ordinary apartment... PART OF FEDOR's HISTORY

Josh Barnett explains to Alex that he is not scared of fighting him. This was the day before Affliction Banned. Rumours about Hepatitis B are LIES, Aleks is not sick. In a recent interview in Korea (August 2008) he has explained once again that he has no health problems, just visa came too late. Also explained that he has nothing to do with mafia. This is what happened : "I (Vadim Finkelstein) do not clearly understand what has happened because we found out that Alexander had been debarred right before weighting procedure. I suppose that California commission has debarred Alexander because he was not in time to the date of medical examination -- 13th of July, but it had happened because we had problems with visa in American embassy. For example Alexander's seconds didn't get visas without any explanations and that is why Alexander came only at July,15. Maybe they haven't done some tests and it became a reason why commission didn't allowed Alexander to fight." Fedor won't fight against Andrei Arlovski in October at Affliction 2 due to the injury in his hand. July 31, 2008 INTERVIEW to Vadim Finkelstein(M-1 President): "If UFC negotiate with us, the fight between Fedor and Randy can take place this year". So when will he (Aleksander) continue fighting? -We do have some variants right now. Maybe he will take place in superfight at the next M-1 Challenge tournament in Korea or at one of the nearest Dream tournaments. What can you say about the fight of Fedor Emelianenko? -The fight was amazing, the speed, hit-and-run attack and the final. Fedor has exceeded all my expectations. I thought that this fight would continue about 3 or 5 minutes, that contestants will box and wrestle, Fedor would look for the possibility to move Tim to parterre and Tim gonna prevent this, but the reality came over all the expectations -- Fedor had moved twice faster then Tim and wiped him off like a storm. What importance does this victory have? -This fight was very important for a few reasons. Finally American audience had a good look at Fedor, because before that a lot of people haven't seen him and it made a lot of arguing about who is the best fighter in the world. Fedor has finished this arguing. Dana White told a lot of ridiculous and offensive things about Fedor -- and they occurred to be meaningless -- his four-times UFC champion has been destroyed by Fedor for 36 seconds. Now nobody can tell that Fedor fights with weak contestants to whom were reconed a lot of very famous and strong fighters. We are trying to find the strongest cotestants for him because of Fedor's level, for example our project "Fighting Fedor" should prove that a right to fight with Fedor should be deserved. We have an information that the next Fedor's fight gonna be with Andrey Arlovski, is it true? -I think, that Arlovski is one of the most possible fighters along with Josh Barnett and Randy Couture. By the way, Couture said that he is ready to fight with Fedor. -I can tell you that if UFC will negotiate with us then this fight can happen this year maybe within the bounds of our joint tournament with UFC. We are ready to negotiate, the fighters are ready, everything is ready, the only deal is with UFC policy headed on their separation and singularity. Dana White has told that Affliction will come out of MMA business and all the fighters will come back to him. What can you tell about it? -Dana White is mistakenand he shouldn't compare Affliction with IFL. Affliction и M-1 Global is maybe the most successful concern in MMA that could be imagined. Earlier I have told that Affliction invests much money in advertising and branding and we have a great experience in tournament organization and sportive potential of our athletes. That's why this concern can have much more success than UFC which is the very first organization that was developing and populating MMA successfully for many years. Extended version analysing the FRAUD of History Channel's presentation of the issues surrounding WTC7's collapse. "We were surprised that the building [WTC7] collapsed, we being the team that investigated what occurred on that day. There was some damage to the Tower 7 caused by debris that hit it from Tower 1 but the damage was certainly not similar in scope or magnitude to that caused by the aircrafts hitting Towers 1 and 2. Normally when you have a structural failure you carefully go through the debris field looking at each item, photographing every beam as it collapsed and every column where it is on the ground and you pick them up very carefully and you look at each element. We were unable to do that in the case of Tower 7". [Jonathan Barnett, PhD. Fire Protection Engineer charged with investigation of WTC7-collapse debris-field.] Cited from video testimony seen here: Also note: [Dear Prof. Barnett, I came across the following comment made by you to James Glanz of the New York Times of November 29, 2001, regarding the collapse of WTC 7 on September 11, 2001: "A combination of an uncontrolled fire and the structural damage might have been able to bring the building down, some engineers said. But that would not explain steel members in the debris pile that appear to have been partly evaporated in extraordinarily high temperatures, Dr. Barnett said."] http://www.aldeilis.net/english/index... ======================================== ======= Dr. Jonathan R. Barnett is a Professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). He holds appointments in Fire Protection engineering and mechanical engineering and is the co-Director and co-founder of the WPI Melbourne Project Center. Dr. Barnett received his undergraduate, masters and doctorate from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He is a fellow of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the National Fire Protection Association, the American Society of Testing and Materials Committee E-5, and the International Association of Fire Safety Science. He has held appointments as the Editor of the SFPE Journal of Fire Protection Engineering, President of the New England Chapter of the SFPE and Chair of the American Society of Civil Engineers Committee on Fire Protection. His work and research in fire protection engineering is extensive, including most recently his participation in the Building Performance Assessment Team organized by the American Society of Civil Engineers for the Federal Emergency Management Agency to investigate the collapse of the World Trade Center Towers after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. His current research centers on the mathematical modeling and computer simulation of fires in buildings, ships and transit systems with an emphasis on heat transfer in structures and the use of computers in fire investigation and fire reconstruction. Recently he has developed a prototype garment flammability test for the U.S. Navy Clothing and Textile Research Facility. (less)
