"The Female Elvis!" *
There were many women belting out Rock'n'Roll in the 50's along with their brothers; Wanda Jackson, Lorrie Collins, Sparkle Moore, Lavern Baker, Ruth Brown, Margaret Lewis, Barbara Pittman, and a young upstart named Jacke DeShannon made crucial music. Alis Lesley styled not only her name after Elvis, but her hair into a mock pompadour and sideburns as well! But it was 16-year-old Janis Martin who was officially dubbed "the female Elvis" in 1956 by RCA*, who had barely finished signing him. That nickname worked for and against her. But time has borne out the quality of her work for new generations.
