What the heck do archaeologists really do? Though you may not find many fedoras, whips, and (for the most part) mummies, archaeology is still a romantic, exciting, and interesting endeavor.

Pictures from many of the archaeological finds spanning the Celtic countries and ages, from Poland to Ireland, from 1000 BC to 700 AD, accompanied by songs by Celts, mostly in Gaelic, an emotional piece for lovers of Celtic Culture and History. Thanks goes out to the many archaeologists, scholars, authors and musicians who are the real contributors in this montage of their life's works.

A title presents 'Earth, sometime in the future.' An archaeologist is guiding students through a cave tour, identifying artefacts as they go. He identifies a ball and explains its usage, the same with a guitar. His students are impressed as they sip their Pepsi and an enthusiastic girl proffers another fossil. "What's this, professor?" she urges excitedly. Examining the long-gone Coca-Cola style bottle however, he is utterly baffled; "I've no idea!" Pepsi. The choice of a new generation. Encyclopedia Britannica: Learn how Vergina, Macedonia received its name and see the ancient remains of this area. Vergina is situated close to the site of ancient Aigai (or Aegae), once the royal capital of ancient Macedon, ruled by the Argead dynasty from about 650 BC onwards. The ruins of another Aigai, one of the Aeolian dodecapolis, lie 35 km S of Pergamon, by the modern Aiolis, Turkey. The entrance to the "Great Tumulus" Museum at Vergina. Archaeologists were interested in the hills around Vergina as early as the 1850s, knowing that the site of Aigai was in the vicinity and suspecting that the hills were burial mounds. Excavations began in 1861 under the French archaeologist Leon Heuzey, sponsored by the Emperor Napoleon III. Parts of the Macedonian royal palace of Palatista were discovered. However, the excavations had to be abandoned because of the risk of malaria. In 1937, the University of Thessaloniki resumed the excavations. More ruins of the ancient palace were found, but the excavations were abandoned on the outbreak of war with Italy in 1939. After the war the excavations were resumed and during the 1950s and 1960s the rest of the royal capital was uncovered. The Greek archaeologist Manolis Andronikos became convinced that a hill called the "Great Tumulus" (in Greek, Μεγάλη Τούμπα) concealed the tombs of the Macedonian Kings. In 1977, Andronikos undertook a six-week dig at the Tumulus and found four buried chambers which he identified as hitherto undisturbed tombs. Three more were found in 1980. Excavations continued through the 1980s and 1990s. Andronikos claimed that these were the burial sites of the kings of Macedon, including the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. Andronikos maintained that one of the tombs was of Philip II, and another was of Alexander IV of Macedon, son of Alexander the Great. This has now become the firm view of Greek archaeologists and the Greek government, but some other archaeologists dispute this identification(Citation needed). Nevertheless there is no doubt that the site is of great archaeological importance. The larnax (gold casket) which Andronikos identified as containing the remains of Philip II has a symbol of a sun or star on its lid, and this Vergina Sun has been adopted as a symbol of Greek Macedonia.

Israelis and Palestinians may not be able to agree right now on their present or future, but if a pair of Los Angeles archaeologists have their way, they soon will see eye to eye on their past. For the past five years, Lynn Swartz Dodd, an archaeologist at the University of Southern California, and Ran Boytner, a UCLA archaeologist, have guided a team of prominent Israeli and Palestinian archaeologists to arrive at the first-ever agreement on the disposition of the region's archaeological treasures following the establishment of a future Palestinian state. We present VITA (Visual Interaction Tool for Archaeology), an experimental collaborative mixed reality system for offsite visualization of an archaeological dig. Our system allows multiple users to visualize the dig site in a mixed reality environment in which tracked, see-through, head-worn displays are combined with a multi-user, multi-touch, projected table surface, a large screen display, and tracked hand-held displays. We focus on augmenting existing archaeological analysis methods with new ways to organize, visualize, and combine the standard 2D information available from an excavation (drawings, pictures, and notes) with textured, laser rangescanned 3D models of objects and the site itself. Users can combine speech, touch, and 3D hand gestures to interact multimodally with the environment. Preliminary user tests were conducted with archaeology researchers and students, and their feedback is presented here. (Authors: Hrvoje Benko, Edward Ishak, Steven Feiner, Columbia University. How did one filmmaker bring this startling evidence to the public's eye? How did archaeology fail us? Movie maker Simcha Jacobovici of The Lost Tomb of Jesus explains that he had more resources and funds than archaeologists. Robotic cameras and other innovative technologies were used to assist in the production of the rediscovery and the film. See the movie on Discovery Channel and Vision TV. The Lost Tomb of Jesus takes you on a journey through time back to the life of Jesus, Mary Mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene. Join Simcha Jacobovici as he unravels one of the oldest mysteries of the Christian religion, the quest for the tomb of Jesus. A tomb is found but with other bone boxes inside. Once deciphered, we learn that this might be the tomb of the Holy Family. With compelling scientific proof and tests, the mystery is solved -- but with monumental discoveries that could change Christianity. This captivating movie is produced by award-winning documentary filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici and co-produced by James Cameron. The book, The Jesus Family Tomb, is co-written by Simcha Jacobovici and Charles Pellegrino. It is published by HarperCollins. The book and the movie will be interesting to those who love the bible, spirituality, religious symbols, archaeology, history, the da vinci code, the Holy Land and, above all, a good adventure!
