I am an abomination.
I am detestable.
I deserve death.
One of the most controversial topics of our society today is homosexuality. In fact, I would argue that it is one of the most divisive topics that can be discussed.
In the Christian Community, many are quick to point out that Homosexuality is sinful, for Leviticus 20:13 clearly states:
If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. (KJV)
But herein lies a problem, as many read this chapter and verse with a literal interpretation.
The Word of God demands more. Biblical scholars continually remind us, that reading the Word isn't enough, one must study His Word.
And with study comes learning and from that, knowledge.
For the Bible is to be studied in the context of which it was written. Not literally one verse at a time, but in the context of the passages that surround each verse and the actual language recorded.
The English representation of today's Bible is our best guess as to what our modern translation of the original Word was. Linguists continually study and refine what we know about these ancient languages and revise translated documents.
The Bible must be read with this in mind, as a historical document with a complete understanding of the events that correspond with each passage.
If we do not, then fail really understand what God has revealed to us.
When you literally read each chapter and verse without it's context, all must be taken at face value and held to equal standards.
These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat. And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:
They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination. Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you. Leviticus 11:9-12 (KJV)
I am abomination.
