Oct 2007 A violent, drug fuelled gang culture is emerging in New Zealand. Unlike the traditional ethnic gangs, these new street gangs model themselves on LA gangsters and are attracting younger and younger recruits. Ten year old Sam describes himself as "a little thug from Otara". He spends his time; "stealing bikes, drinking", although he has given up smoking. It's estimated there are 2,000 young gang members in Auckland. The problem has become so serious that some politicians are calling for all gangs to be banned. "We should be simply outlawing them and making it illegal for anyone to be a member of a named gang". But criminologist Greg Newbold believes this; "could never, ever succeed". While political debate rages, some youth workers are taking matters into their own hands. They drive around the gang hotspots trying to befriend the vulnerable kids.

In 2004 when I was 22 year old I went backpacking in New Zealand for almost a year. On the way to New Zealand I parked for two weeks in Hong Kong and on the way back From New Zealand for two weeks in Thailand. I recorded 'Heavy Rain' around the middel of that trip which was written and sung (usually... not this time) by the drummer of the Israeli rock band 'Monica Sex'. This song was recorded to the BOSS BR-1180 using only a small Silverhead guitar and my voice. I think I've captured Monica's 2$ overdrive sound. (This sounds better in Hebrew) Well... I made a small video with a few of my pictures and video clips from my trip all done with my digital camera. I change a lot of looks and haircuts because I'm backpacking. Now I have settled down. Have fun... THE STORY BEHIND AND SOME TECH STUFF ************************************************** When I left home I took with me a mini-guitar (Silverhead) not to lose my skills (which I did at that time). The neck is standard, like any other electric guitar neck but the body is very small. It has a small speaker in it that works on 9V battery. When this guitar is plugged to an amp it sounds like any other electric guitar though it's not that easy playing with this guitar things that require a lot of bends because there is too much tension in the strings. There is a volume knob on it. When it's on low there is a clean and bright sound and as you go louder and louder it gets to more overdrive and up to distortion. Because the speaker is located behind the strings, when you turn the volume up you have a very nice controlled feedback. Around half of my trip I found a guy that had a BOSS BR-1180. I loved it (at the time) and ordered one on eBay and shipped it to New Zealand. A few days after I got it I started recording this song. It took me four days to complete it. If I remember correctly it took me about one day to program the drums which I never did before (and I don't think I will do ever again(, Two days for the guitars and bass and another day for the vocals. All Guitar sounds didn't come from the speaker. When you plug the guitar to an amp, or the BOSS unit in this case the speaker shuts down. There is a built in multi-effect and the BASS SIMULATOR is really cool, challenging and faulty but cool. All editing and mixing and everything was done on the BOSS BR-1180.
