Prior to the United States' entry into WWII many Americans volunteered for service in the RAF and RCAF. The Battle of Britain raged from May though October 1940. The stories of the RAF pilots flying their Hurricanes and Spitfires inspired many to look into joining the RAF. Of the thousands that volunteered, 244 American pilots were to fly for the Eagle Squadrons; Number 71, 121, and 133 Squadrons of the Royal Air Force Fighter Command. From the time the first Eagle Squadron was formed in September 1940 until all three squadrons were disbanded and incorporated into the USAAF in September 1942, they destroyed 73 1/2 German planes while 77 American and 5 British members were killed. The basic requirements for those interested in joining the Eagles were a high school diploma, between 20 and 31 years of age, eyesight that was 20/40 correctable to 20/20, and 300 hours of certified flying time. These requirements were somewhat less strict than those required for service in the USAAF which is the reason some of the pilots joined the RAF or the RCAF in the first place. The reason most of the pilots volunteered was quite simply for adventure. Leo Nomis wrote "I think that all of us, with very few exceptions were simply adventurers and romanticists, and perhaps idealists." Robert Patterson noted "I joined the RAF not primarily for patriotic reasons. We all knew a war was coming. I used this as a quick way for some flying excitement." Howard Stickland observed "We were all motivated by the thought of high adventure, the excitment of combat flying, and a desire to help the British." Red McColpin wrote that some "could not take the long routine in the U.S. services to become military pilots, when they were already experienced aviators." Once in England the new recruits were sent to an operational training unit (OTU) for two to four weeks, where they learned to fly Miles Master trainers, Hurricanes, and Spitfires before being posted to a squadron. After OTU some of the men went straight to one of the Eagle Squadrons while others first served with other RAF squadrons before being transferred to an Eagle squadron. Once operational the squadrons took part in a variety of missions. Convoy escort patrols were common, long, and monototonous. Usually convoy escort was done by 2 planes flying circuits around the ships at an altitude as low as 100 feet. Given poor weather, fog & haze it was not uncommon for planes to crash into the sea. Rhubarbs were two plane low level ground attack missions. McColpin wrote "Of all the missions, the rhubarb was the most fun. Flying a few feet off the ground, you shot up railroads, troops, tanks, ships, or anything else of military value." A hit to a Hurricane or Spitfire's glycol system however meant a bail over enemy territory. A Circus was a combined bomber & fighter mission designed to draw out the LW. Ramrods were bomber escort missions. The bombers escorted were generally Blenheims, Bostons, Hurricane bombers or B-17s. A Balboa had the fighters serving as decoys while bombers hit a nearby target. Among the German-occupied targets over which the pilots flew were Ostend, Belgium; and Dunkirk, Lille, Abbeville, St Omer, Calais, Boulogne, Dieppe and Cherbourg, France. A fighter sweep was referred to as a Rodeo. Those squadrons based at the larger bases such as Biggin Hill and North Weald usually flew sweeps as part of a three squadron wing while those based at smaller bases such as Martlesham Heath flew solo sweeps or top cover for the wing in their sector. When informed of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor most of the Eagle Squadron pilots wanted to immediately join the Air Corps. 71 and 121 Squadrons sent representatives to the American Embassy in London and offered their services to the US the following day. 71 squadron then decided they wanted to go to Singapore to fight the Japanese and a proposal was put to Fighter Command but turned down. It would take some time however for the USAAF to organize and ship to England the elements necessary to support air operations. HQ 8th Air Force opened on 18 June 1942 in London with Major General Carl Spaatz commanding. On 26 June 1942 air echelons of the 31st Fighter Group (307th, 308th, 309th FS) were established at Atcham and High Ercall, England. These were the first combat personnel of the VIII Fighter Command to reach the UK. These squadrons were equipped with Spit Vs and flew thier first mission on 17 August 1942. The first USAAF air operation over W Europe took place on 4 July 1942 with the 15th Bombardment Squadron (Light) flying 6 Bostons belonging to No. 226 Squadron RAF. On 29 September 1942 the Eagle Squadrons were incorporated into the Fourth Fighter Group, USAAF as the 334th(71), 335th(121), and 336th(133).

his was a meaningful moment for Annabel and for me... witnessing the candidate we'd volunteered for in 2006 introduce the candidate we'd volunteered for in 2008, in his first speech as the Democratic nominee for President of the United States. Few know better than we do that the spirit of inclusion, fairness, and respect that inspired "Real Virginians For Webb" nearly two years ago is even more crucial in the Virginia of 2008. We will soon be unfurling the Real Virginians banner once again, this time, perhaps it will be called Real Virginians for Obama. And perhaps, somewhere down the road, it will be Real Virginians for Obama/Webb. Who knows...? For those who don't know, the name "Real Virginians" was coined by Annabel Park during the 2006 Senate campaign, after Webb's opponent George Allen (R) had pointed to an Asian American man during a stump speech and said, "Let's have a round of applause to welcome macaca to America and the Real World of Virginia." Our aim was to remind Senator Allen that Real Virginians are not defined by what you look like, we are defined by values that we share.

I volunteer to help the Japanese translator do his handcuff training with the San Diego Coast Guard. The rest of the class was on a smoke break, and he has been so busy translating between the instructors and students that he didn't get to practice. I happily handed over my camera and volunteered!

Visit www.desertelephant.org Ever wanted to volunteer your time? Human - animal conflicts are happening all over the world. In Namibia, desert dwelling elephants are in competition for natural resources with the human inhabitants of the northern Erongo and Kunene regions. Elephant Human Relations Aid (EHRA) is a project that was launched as a result of this conflict. EHRA believes that through assisting the human inhabitants in constructing protective structures around water points, educating community members about elephant behaviour, creating alternative drinking points for the elephants and promoting tourism in the affected areas, we can assist in alleviating the current pressure facing communal farmers. Thereby helping to promote the future of the desert dwelling elephant in harmony with the continuous positive development of the conservancies and their ideals. This video is a result of the time I volunteered with EHRA. . .

Early into my 2nd 2-week stay helping out in the 9th Ward of New Orleans, my new friend and fellow volunteer, Quinten Collier, gave me a CD of some songs he'd written and recorded. A few months into his 6-month stay in New Orleans, Quinten found an old reel-to-reel tape recorder buried in a storage closet at Common Ground, the relief organization we both volunteered with. Thus was born the 1-man band Watermelon's recording of "Echo's Bones," a lo-fi 14-song acoustic guitar masterpiece (in my humble opinion). This is the brilliant last song on the CD. Slapped together with video and pics I shot, much of it during "Spring Break in the 9th Ward." Here's a different picture of a generation you're not seeing on MTV or Girls Gone Wild videos.

Lindsey Williams, who has been an ordained Baptist minister for 28 years, went to Alaska in 1971 as a missionary. The Transalaska oil pipeline began its construction phase in 1974, and because of Mr. Williams' love for his country and concern for the spiritual welfare of the "pipeliners," he volunteered to serve as Chaplain on the pipeline, with the subsequent full support of the Alyeska Pipeline Company. Because of the executive status accorded to him as Chaplain, he was given access to information documented in his eye opening book, The Energy Non-Crisis. After numerous public speaking engagements in the western states, certain government officials and concerned individuals urged Mr. Williams to put into print what he saw and heard, stating that they felt this information was vital to national security. Mr. Williams firmly believes that whoever controls energy controls the economy. Thus, The Energy Non-Crisis. http://www.lwoil.com

Part 11 - The Invasion of Sicily. To secure a foothold backing to Europe, the Allies decide to invade Sicily from North Africa and American glider pilots see their first action of the war. From the early race to build gliders to the D-Day invasion at Normandy and Nazi Germany's final surrender, Silent Wings - The American Glider Pilots of WWII narrated by Hal Holbrook, reveals the critical role gliders played in World War II offensives. Through rare archival footage and photographs, the film places the audience right at the center of the action in the dangerous world of the American glider pilot. During WWII, 6000 young Americans volunteered to fly large unarmed cargo gliders into battle. For these glider pilots every mission was do-or-die. It was their task to repeatedly risk their lives landing the men and tools of war deep within enemy-held territory, often in complete darkness. Thousands of lives were saved and battles won because of their efforts. In fact, one pilot interviewed said - the 'G' in their emblem didn't stand for glider; it stood for 'guts'. Available on DVD.

Scenes from the 2008 South Central Bike Fair...the Bike Fair that almost wasn't. After being cancelled, a group of concerned local bikers and merchants stepped up and volunteered their time and support with materials, money, and manpower to see that this years event would go on. After only two months of preparation the event went off without a hitch and was the most successful in 13 years. We couldn't have done it without their help and are extremely grateful for friends like them. Music by Joe Cocker - "With a little help from my friends". Photos by Jon Jon and Kendele Jo. Thanks to ALL!!!

This one's not very long, but I took a quick shot of all the goings-on at Pointfest. You will see the various objects being thrown into the air and people body-surfing across the crowd. Good stuff. I might also point out that I was volunteered to body-surf later on by Jonny as he and some others picked me up and threw me onto the dense crowd. Wish I had a video of that. I will point out, though, that I was more successful at it than the guy on the right at the end of this video. Watch him fall on his ass. Haha!!

Does Forced Volunteerism Contribute To the 'Slave' Mentality? Barack Obama gave a speech on July 2, 2008 on "A New Era of Service" where he said he would set a goal for students to perform a certain amount of "service" a year and that he would attach strings to educational monies to assure they did so. Jonah Goldberg, writing an editorial for the LA Times has taken issue with Barack Obama's speech to which Obama said he would "set a goal for all American middle and high school students to perform 50 hours of service a year, and for all college students to perform 100 hours of service a year." Obama went on to say he would attach strings to educational dollars to see to it those goals were met. Goldberg goes on to quote from the 13th amendment which says, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime where of the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." Goldberg doesn't let John McCain off the hook either as he points out that John McCain and President Bush both are in favor of "Washington-led (and paid-for) "volunteerism." He also points out that both Christopher J. Dodd and John Edwards used compulsory service in their campaign platforms. In pointing out the data and statistics of Americans that willingly give their time and money, he says: Americans are vastly more generous with their time and their money than Europeans. According to social demographer Arthur C. Brooks, in 1995 (the last year international comparative data on giving was available), Americans gave 3 1/2 times as much money to charities and causes as the French, seven times more than the Germans and 14 times more than the Italians. In 1998, Americans also volunteered 21% more than the Swiss and 32% more than Germans -- two countries with compulsory national service. And yet we're continually told we should emulate them so that America too can have a "culture of service." Goldberg readily admits that national service is not slavery but he contends that compulsory national service contributes to the "slave mentality". There's a weird irony at work when Sen. Barack Obama, the black presidential candidate who will allegedly scrub the stain of racism from the nation, vows to run afoul of the constitutional amendment that abolished slavery. Is Goldberg right that forcing people to volunteer by threatening the funding of their education is contradictory to the literal definition of the word "volunteer"? 1. a person who voluntarily offers himself or herself for a service or undertaking. 2. a person who performs a service willingly and without pay. Is making service compulsory, for a nation that already gives more time and money, run the risk of going against the 13th amendment?

Snippet from a kathakali performance, Cochin Kathakali Center, June 2008. The scene is from the Indian epic poem the Mahabharata. In it the Pandavi hero Bhima (right) is confronted by the flesh-eating demon Bakasura (left). The torches are meant to convey the fire that the demon shoots from his eyes as he roars challenges at his nemesis. The story line, from Wikipedia: Bakasura was a cannibalistic forest-dwelling rakshasa who terrorized the nearby human population by forcing them to take turns making him regular deliveries of food, including human victims. Unfortunately for Bakasura, the Pandavas travelled into the area and took up residence with a local Brahmana whose turn had come up to make the delivery. As the Brahmana and his family debated which one of them would have to be sacrificed, the rugged Bhima volunteered to take care of the matter. Bhima went into the forest and engaged Bakasura in a ferocious wrestling match, which ended with Bhima breaking his opponent's back. The human townspeople were amazed and grateful, and the local rakshasas begged for mercy, which Bhima granted them on the condition that they give up cannibalism. The rakshasas agreed to the proposal, and soon acquired a reputation for being peaceful towards humans. (Book I: Adi Parva, Sections 159-166.)
