Lyme disease -- it has become epidemic on Long Island and much of the New York Metropolitan Area, indeed across the United States. But as bad as the illness has become, so has treatment for it -- health insurers have discouraged long-term treatment for what is often a long-term illness. Suffolk County Long Island Legislator Edward Romaine recently held a public meeting on Lyme disease. Eva Haughie, President, Empire State Lyme Disease Association. She has had Lyme disease for nearly 20 years. Her association is based in Manorville. Dr. Joseph Burrascano, East Hampton, New York He is a pioneer in the treatment of Lyme disease. And because of the push by medical insurers to only cover short-term treatment -- two, three or four weeks of antibiotics -- and Dr. Burrascano having developed a protocol for treating the many people who are not cured in the short-term but have chronic Lyme disease, he ended up being attacked. But he came through it and is regarded as a major leader in the field. Staci Grodin, Co-Founder and President, Turn the Corner Foundation. A Lyme Diseases victim, her Turn the Corner Foundation has raised over $2 million and funded important Lyme disease research. Sandy Berenbaum, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Brewster, New York. She has specialized with working with those with chronic Lyme disease. Her accounts were most poignant, and her explanation of why health insurers balk at providing compensation for long-term treatment most illuminating. Diane Blanchard, President, Time for Lyme. A former resident of Westhampton, where she and members of her family contracted Lyme disease, she presently lives in Greenwich, Connectcut. Her organization, Time for Lyme, focuses on education and research. Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. Humayan Chaudhry. confirms how Lyme disease has become "endemic". Suffolk County Legislator Edward Romaine New York State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr., Sag Harbor, New York who talks about the bill he has before the New York State Assembly requiring health insurers to provide compensation for long-term treatment of Lyme diseases -- a measure that has been bottled up in Albany. VVH-TV News Chief Investigative Reporter Karl Grossman interviews author Long Island native and lawyer Michael Christopher Carroll about his work "Lab 257". This work takes us on a shocking journey inside the notorious Plum Island biological research facility. Carroll spent five years researching this highly detailed and powerful account of the secretive government installation that sits just off the coast of some of New York's prime real estate, an installation that has had its share of meltdowns, mishaps and downright scary security breaches, including two known releases of deadly viruses into the air. Owned by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Plum Island lies just off the coast of the North Fork of Long Island. This otherwise uninhabited, woodsy island has a long history of controversy and secrecy, as Carroll so intricately details, and just may have put the millions of residents of the Tri-State area in utter danger of exposure to fatal animal diseases, including Rift Valley fever, West Nile virus, and even anthrax, time and time again. Lab 257 is a wake-up call to people to be more aware of what goes on in their own backyards. Labs like these exist all over the country, some more visible than others. Shoring up our crumbling biological research labs and accounting for the hundreds of vials of deadly viruses and microbes might be a better use of our time, our taxes and our energy. Plum Island, and its history of danger to millions of citizens, is proof of that indeed. VVH-TV News attempted to have an interview with officials from the Department of Homeland Security but were denied.

VVH-TV News Chief Investigative Reporter Karl Grossman interviews individuals on both sides of the Broadwater LNG Project on Long Island Sound. Shell and TransCanada Energy, two of North America's largest energy companies, have proposed building a 10-story-high, four-football-field-long (about the size of the Queen Mary cruise liner) liquid natural gas storage facility in the middle of LIS. The proposed facility would be 75 to 100 feet tall. It would be four football fields long and larger than the QE2. It would be anchored 10.5 miles from Cosey Beach Park in East Haven, about 17 miles from the Long Island Sound Ferry, and 18 miles from Hammonasset Beach. But, as most people know, the Sound is one of the most beautiful and significant bodies of water in the United States. In 1987, after Congress allocated funds for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to research, monitor, and assess the water quality of the Sound, it became an Estuary of National Significance. It contains thousands of species of wildlife, and is a vital part of our nation's environment. And, it provides employment and recreational opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people throughout our region. Over the past ten years, the federal government, and the states of Connecticut and New York, have spent hundreds of millions of dollars to restore and protect the water quality of this national treasure. TransCanada and Shell have also made it clear that the natural gas they would import to the factory-like facility they call "Broadwater" will be from sources outside of North America. The proposal for a natural gas storage facility in the middle of Long Island Sound is not environmentally sustainable. A sustainable project would have to incorporate both an aggressive energy efficiency and conservation effort. Copyright WVVH-TV Hamptons Television® 2007 all rights reserved

16th Annual East Hampton Sandcastle With a concept formulated in 1991, by Rossetti Perchik, the 1st Annual East Hampton SandCastle Contest took place on August 26, 1992 at the Atlantic Avenue Beach in Amagansett. In September of 1993 we were approved as a NYS 501c3 Not-For-Profit Corporation under the name of the Clamshell Foundation. The SandCastle Contest has become one of the highlights of the Hampton summer. The name "Clamshell Foundation" was chosen in deference to those on the East End of Long Island who made a livelihood from the waters of Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. Clamshells can be found everywhere. The purpose of the corporation, as stated in our charter, is to enrich the lives of others by fostering education in health, cultural, and environmental fields of endeavor. Currently, we are concentrating our efforts in the area of water quality projects here in the Town of East Hampton, as well as community based concerns such as local food pantries and educational projects. The SandCastle Contest was created not only as a day of fun on the beach, but also to point out how important the waters are to all of us. Contributions to the Clamshell Foundation can help to bring about change, and protect the very reason that we are a resort community For more info contact: www.EHSandcastle.com Copyright WVVH-TV Hamptons Television® 2007 all rights reserved

STEAL A PENCIL FOR ME is a compelling documentary feature film by Academy Award® nominee Michèle Ohayon about the power of love and the ability of humankind to rise above unimaginable suffering. 1943; Holland is under total Nazi occupation. In Amsterdam, Jack, an unassuming accountant, first meets Ina at a birthday party -- a 20 year old beauty from a wealthy diamond manufacturing family who instantly steals his heart. But Jack's pursuit of love will be complicated; he is poor and married to Manja, a flirtatious and mercurial spouse. When the Jews are being deported, the husband, the wife and the lover find themselves at the same concentration camp; actually living in the same barracks. When Jack's wife objects to the "girlfriend" in spite of their unhappy marriage, Jack and Ina resort to writing secret love letters, which sustain them throughout the horrible circumstances of the war. Jack: "I'm a very special Holocaust survivor. I was in the camps with my wife and my girlfriend; and believe me, it wasn't easy." Greg Schimizzi of VVH-TV interviews Jack (94 years) and his wife Ina (84 years) at the Hamptons International Film Festival. Jack and Ina talk about their lives and how that time at Concentration Camp 61 years ago shaped destiny. Karl Grossman, Chief Investigative Reporter of VVH-TV examines the issue of the future of Sag Harbor. About SAVING SAG HARBOR There is a community-based effort to keep Sag Harbor from becoming overrun by big chain stores, and to make sure that family-and locally-owned businesses can continue to thrive here. The residents of Sag Harbor would like to protect the sustainability of Sag Harbor's many small stores and the social, cultural, and environmental aesthetics of the Village. Their proprietors are our friends and neighbors, and if they are pressured to close their doors, the character, and in fact the "brandable" nature of our village, will change irrevocably. This realization has evolved into the larger goal of maintaining the scale and quality of life in and around the village in both commercial and residential terms.
