FOR PART 2 VISIT: http://www.vbs.tv/player.php?bccl=OTg3MjAwMjI1X19ORVdT= Last winter we decided VBS had to do a story on the Oil Sands of Alberta. So far no American media outlet had comprehensively covered it and even the local press's approach has left a lot to be desired. No one seemed to even know what it was. It's strange that as we hit peak oil and the global oil reserves go on the decline, we have heard next to nothing about the fact that Canada, due to improved oil extraction technology and record oil prices, is poised to become a major player in the geopolitical market place. The big question going in is what does this sudden access to previously unobtainable oil mean? Is this our get out of jail free card for the present energy crisis or is it another pipe dream being hyped up by the very corporations and lobbyists who stand to gain the most from it? Traveling through the haze of Ft. McMurray did nothing but fortify our stance on fossil fuel. It's dirty, expensive, and--most importantly--nonrenewable. Al Gore recently likened the oil sands to a drug pusher, satisfying our jones for quick and cheap energy. Say what you will about pushers (at least they're not kicking out greenhouse gasses to the tune of 80 million kilograms a day), but we think he's got us and our jones pretty much square on the head. PS: If you're wondering who did the music for this series, it was Pelican in episode 1, and Moss of Aura in episode 2.

By this point, we're pretty sure most of our moms have heard fucking "Temperature" or whatever (and are starting to get over it). Here though, are some little supplementary interviews with SP by the mainstream media. www.VBS.tv

SEE MORE - http://www.vbs.tv/video.php?id=1448201907 VBS.tv has a three part interview up now with rapper Rick Ross. In the interview Ross endorses Obama for president as well as endorsing Obam's right to cheat on his wife on the road, cause a man is a man. He also says people should lighten about HGH, that home runs save baseball, that Roger Clemens is a hero, and Andy Pettitte is no friend for ratting Clemens out. Oh and Rick Ross likes fish sandwiches. Ever see those talk shows where they showcase the literal personified version of opposites attract? A midget who married a giant, a personal trainer whose wife is 400lbs, or two lovers who don't even speak the same language...This is all I could think about after spending an afternoon with Rick Ross. We met up to do a little shoe shopping, but ended up giggling and flirting instead. He is easily twice, maybe even three time my size, yet as intimidating as that usually is, he was so warm and quite honestly, brilliant. I think a lot of people make the assumption that rappers and various other entertainers just strike it rich out of nowhere, or become famous for glamorous reasons. This might be the case here and there, but for the most part, these people are marketing geniuses and incredibly driven. RR is a business man. He kept going off on these tangents about any and everything and has this way of convincing you that he is right. He made the idea of killing someone seem pretty reasonable, the thought of eating an 80oz steak appetizing, and the use of HGH necessary. He has this perfect combination of business manners and street smarts, which makes for some of the most interesting conversation I've ever had. I only take one issue with the man, he calls himself Rick Ross the Boss. Where I come from, there is only one boss, and that's Springsteen. I mentioned this to him and his reply, "Fuck that, tell him to come and see me. Ya feel me?" SEE MORE WWW.VBS.TV

Despite ringing in Scott Martin from Crom the hometeam still gets its ass handed to them. Er, I mean, could very easily win or lose. Actually I'm seeing them tonight with Neurosis. Face melting. VBS BOWLER/AD SALESMAN/BLACK OUT MAN/ALL AROUND GOOD GUY JOHN MARTIN REMINISCES ABOUT HIS LANESIDE ENCOUNTER WITH MASTODON My surprise was learning that Mastodon knew how to bowl, and were actually damn good at it. I was also shocked to find out that bowling is taught at some institutes of higher learning and that Mastodon attended college, which is where they learned how to bowl. One other surprise that I should have seen coming: Whenever someone says they're "awesome at bowling", they're usually not. The good bowlers don't say shit—they just smugly sip their beer after beating you by over 100 points, game after game. Cheers, fuckers. WWW.VBS.TV

The Hold Steady is everything that VBS loves in a band. Great guys, great songs, and they know how to have a great time. We wanted an excuse to hang out with 'em so we skipped out on an afternoon at work for some nice summer midday drinking and concocted VBS vs. The Hold Steady in bar games. New album is out and it's awesome.

Every year our church does VBS for kids in preschool to 6th grade. The Junior Highers and High Schoolers help volunteer along with dozens of adults from the church. This was our biggest one every with around 310 kids and almost 100 volunteers. We had two stages going (one for the preschoolers and one for kids grade 1-6). The characters on stage for the older kids were Howdy Rowdy (the guy who looks a little like Woody from Toy Story) and Rusty Dusty (the cowboy in mostly black). The preschoolers had the pleasure of being led by Daphadil and Justin Boots. This year we had a Cowboy theme and the entire place looked like a ranch. We called it Avalanche Ranch. The people who decorated did a TREMENDOUS job. It was a great week and we all look forward to coming back next year to teach kids more about God and His Word.
